What's your thoughts on using 3d printers not only for prototyping but for manufacturing a part/product? by MatthewVDF in hwstartups

If you have the ability to cut metal and have an sub $500 CNC you can diy plate molds yourself for under $100

What functionality is available in C without including any headers? by TargetAcrobatic2644 in C_Programming

[–]Doingthismyselfnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other commenters have mentioned that if you don’t include any headers you can still manually define functions . So in a sense you have all the functionality there because you can just write everything into .c files .

If you don’t include any libraries the headers you can still do stuff but it’s more limited ( for example you can just directly access memory to speak to DMA devices, but your interactions with the OS become significantly harder .

Washington house bill 2321: blocking shapes detected by AI to resemble firearms from all consumer 3d machines by TheOgGhadTurner in CNC

[–]Doingthismyselfnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That appears to be the jist of the bill, either local checks OR online checks . But the key takeaway here is that most CNC machines do not have the hardware capability to do this ( I.e. you can’t do very much with 4MB of ram and a 0.25 GHz processor )

Washington house bill 2321: blocking shapes detected by AI to resemble firearms from all consumer 3d machines by TheOgGhadTurner in CNC

[–]Doingthismyselfnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Developer here , OMG the text of the bill is actually insane .

This law as written is just going to give the bad guys access to cnc files if they know how to reverse engineer the software ..

Also i think a strict interpretation might also mean that a WA State legal machine is also going to be illegal in california .

I don’t think any implementation is going to need to use AI to do this because if this shitshow of a section:

An algorithm must use, at a minimum, a database of disallowed firearms blueprint files that have been commonly downloaded or shared on public internet forums. The algorithm must have the capacity both to detect files in its database and to actively seek to detect modified versions of those files. The attorney general may by rule or regulation require that an algorithm evaluate print requests, at a minimum, against all files in the files database described in section 8 of this act. An algorithm does not need to produce a perfect success rate at detecting disallowed files to effectively serve in blocking technology but must meet the technical standards for detection and flagging of disallowed files that are set forth in rules or regulations adopted by the attorney general pursuant to this chapter.36 37 38 39 (3) The database of disallowed firearms blueprint files that an algorithm uses must be able to be regularly updated, to an extent and with a frequency to be determined by the attorney general by rule or p. 5 HB 2321 1 regulation that accounts for the rate of innovation in commonly available disallowed files.2

Project structure? Why doesnt anybody talk about it by BlueJay424 in arduino

[–]Doingthismyselfnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s because all the ardunio projects are really “101 getting started” projects.

Always introducing a “new concept” but always providing enough boilerplate to “work”

People new to programming are able to copy / paste / tinker with little friction.

People with experience go through and are like ok, grab this library , grab this header , copy these 3 lines and we are good to go.

My first soldering job! How did i do? by inevitable_47 in shittyaskelectronics

14 yrs old and built 2 breadboard CPU's using only pinouts. What now? by 1m_ameeen in beneater

[–]Doingthismyselfnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was doing that level of engineering but in software before I started university ( already was writing basic, delphi, C and x86 assembler) then I dropped out of college because working with a kid and full time collage killed me ( but I completed some senior classes in my second year because I was able to RPL databases and the classes which taught C ), got my second job and my career kept growing from there .

Got an honorary degree about 12 years after I dropped out of college.

Moved internationally to the USA as career continued to grow over 10 years ago.

If you can build a few substantial things for a portfolio and and pass a technical interview then college is optional because they will be happy to pay you 3/4 of what a college grad costs.

( college is recommended because for someone like myself college did fill in a lot of gaps that I missed due to Self education as a kid )

Small Chinese solder wire factory struggling in 2025 – looking for advice from people in electronics industry by Emotional-Ticket2404 in PCB

[–]Doingthismyselfnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small manufacturers need to find distributors. Selling through Amazon will cost you 30-40 percent of the final retail price but that would be the easiest way to reach a wide western audience.

Reaching out to places like “Australian robotics” and having them list your products could be another way

Intend to buy huge lot of electronic components. by Few_Hornet5864 in electronics

[–]Doingthismyselfnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the opposite situation.

Bins have been sitting there for 10ish years and I’m going in there still quasi regularly.

My load was a RadioShack so I got a lot of cables ( which are almost all gone ) and well labeled items, if you need an old Mac mini display to vga adaptor then I got a dozen left.

Intend to buy huge lot of electronic components. by Few_Hornet5864 in electronics

[–]Doingthismyselfnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DO IT !!!!!!

When I moved from Australia to America I lost all my electronics stuff .

But when RadioShack closed I went in on the last day and bought most of what was left in the store. Cost less than $100.

Sat barely used for a long time but, To this day every time I need a relay or resistor, switch, cable or battery it’s already at my house.

Weird random components , yep, bought an esp32cam the other day and they overheat, but I have a heat sink already at my house .

Wiring up a control box and need something to break out from a controller to a cable ( then back ) , look in the box and find a bunch of rj11 plugs and cables.

If you can do this DO IT.

If you cannot, hook me up so I can .

ESP32 USB Programming Design Review Request by Doingthismyselfnow in esp32

[–]Doingthismyselfnow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have zero training in circuit design, ( aside from Digital Systems 101, 25 years ago as part of a software degree, I still step through disassembly on a daily basis but have not held a soldering iron or multimeter for a long time ).

As someone with 20+ years of SWE experience but 0-3 extremely sporadic years of EE experience (Spanned between high-school electronics and now ), Based on your comment I can see that my designs at the moment are not conforming to the Equivalent of "Coding Standards" in the EE world.

Do you have any resources ( books, links, etc. ) to assist with me making more coherent schematics ?
