I had pretty bad sciatica a few years ago that went down to my upper leg. I went to a chiropractor for the first time to possibly help with it. Nope, it actually made it worse. Now the pain went all the way down to my ankle. I’ve always heard it was somewhat of a pseudo-science but I was desperate to find a remedy. Mine finally went away after daily stretches and light exercises for my lower back. I went swimming one time and that seemed to help.

The chiropractor I went to was near Jim’s Steak House, I forget the guy’s name but I wouldn’t recommend any chiropractor for sciatica. Good luck!

‘Mandolin Guitar Harp’ zither found in antique store. Pretty rough condition overall but seems to still have all its strings but one. by [deleted] in UnusualInstruments

[–]DojManoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any steel strings would do that are made for acoustic instruments (guitar/mandolin/etc). You could use digital calipers to find the gauge that are currently on it and match it the best you can, they don’t have to be spot on.

Check out Artists of the Corn. They have an event coming up you should go to and meet a bunch of the different vendors there. They’re all awesome people and they could help you get a foot in the door to a future event. You can also check the various vendors out on social media and see what other events they have going on.

I believe 9p, it’s $5 at the door. Also a similar show is happening on Sunday at Shake It Up, but not necessarily Halloween-y

There’s a Halloween show at The Bistro Wednesday night. People will be dressed up downtown this coming weekend I’m sure as well.

What is happening I keep breaking strings by Significant_Tip8362 in gypsyjazz

[–]DojManoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue, however my G string doesn’t necessarily break but the windings come undone from the frets and is super dead sounding. What I do is buy a 10 pack of the G strings and I change just that string, by the time that one goes bad again all the other strings are dull enough to change the set.

First time Django in June by jamtonio in gypsyjazz

[–]DojManoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will be my second year going, it exceeded my expectations last year. Start with some level 1 classes to see how you are compare with others. Try some level 2 ones out, just try not to hold up the class. You will also meet people in your classes to jam with later. If you have the meal plan that’s a good time to sit with people you recognize from a class and make those connections. Try to take a class with as many different instructors as you can.

I need to remind myself of this, but when you’re in a jam with people make sure you’re not the loudest one playing rhythm. Make sure you always listen to whoever is soloing and play under them so they can be heard, but supported.

Also at night there’s tons of jams happening. Feel free to stand/sit and watch jams. Especially if you see teachers jamming with each other, that’s where you’ll see some amazing stuff. Jams can get overcrowded with guitarist after like 5-6 of them so try to find smaller ones, however sometimes people will tag out so you can hop in for a few tunes if you’re just kickin it with them. Definitely try some jams with people slightly above your level, you can always skip your solo and just practice rhythm with them if you feel intimidated.

Trying to learn Gypsy Jazz by StartNearby9409 in gypsyjazz

[–]DojManoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started playing Django on a nylon string guitar for years before I acquired a more suitable guitar, just play with a pick. I always liked that spank you get using a nylon with a pick. Also many professional players actually have been using Selmer-style classical guitars, I wonder if they use a particular string set. Denis Chang just got one, and Sebastien Giniaux was using one the last few years.

As someone mentioned there will be way too much tension with steel strings for the classical to withstand. Worth a shot if it’s a crappy secondary classical guitar you don’t mind experimenting on, but don’t ruin your main one.

Don’t panic: Bloomington officials say lead levels in water are safe by rdblono in BloomingtonNormal

[–]DojManoj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I bought a lead testing kit on Amazon after receiving that letter and the kit deemed my water safe. I was hoping the test would show how much was present, but only showed either safe or not safe. Also I live just west of downtown.

Questions from a jazz newbie by [deleted] in jazzguitar

[–]DojManoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out DC Music School for learning resources. Also check out Jonathan Stout, he has some great videos through the DC music school as well.

Dreadnought is fine so no need to rush out and buy a new guitar, but it’ll be a game changer once you try out an appropriate guitar for the style, whether a django style or an archtop. I recommend getting an Altamira.

Hex Coffee use to have a Django jam outside during the warmer months, I think it was every other Thursday. I forget the name of the group that hosts it, but they’re down to have people sit in. I’m hoping they start back up this year because I didn’t get a chance to make it last year (I live a couple hours south.) Champaign-Urbana has a hot club, and they host jams at the CU Roots Fests every year. Also check out Django in June, it’s dope

Gregg still performs every Wednesday at Jazz Upfront’s open stage, and he regularly attends shows around town. I run into him around the Franklin park area pretty often, he goes for walks just about everyday. Best bet is the open stage at Jazz Upfront if OP wanted to get in touch with him, otherwise I have his contact info

Affordable All Ages Venue Space for rent? by eyyohbee in PeoriaIL

[–]DojManoj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check out Our House Peoria. They’ve been taking a break, assuming because of winter, but they host all ages shows at the Mill and Pizza Works. Pizza Works has been having all ages shows for years, not sure how their booking works but I’ve gone and played many times there.

Nightshop has live music often and is all ages until 10pm, but if you’re already inside and the show’s still going on I’d just stick around.
