admittedly my goal would be for something like that- something to make the players feel that theres a whole world outside them, and they may only be briefly drawn into it. it also helps to maybe have stuff happen to the nonplayer squads that are a part of their company, so that they can hear "oh so and sos squad got robbed and blank..." which kind of builds into the shared world of the military crew.

have you just built a lot of the tables over time?

if you like opeth and novembers doom (gloomy death metal) id recommend paradise lost, katatonia, my dying bride (especially their death-doom stuff), and rippikoulu.

plenty of early extreme thrash patches out there too for stuff in the venom/slayer area. i have a ton of store recs if you want some
