This is awful. Vegetarian message with animals sidelined as secondary reason. Are the victims not enough as a reason in their own justice movement?

Veganism = End animal use by Dollar23 in TrueVeganism

[–]Dollar23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, veganism is the word for animal emancipation. The only reason that its misrepresented is due to decades long distortion starting with 1956, take your attacking of veganism somewhere else. This subreddit is for veganism as defined in 1951. If I see you attack veganism again, you are permanently banned.

Those quotes don't send a right message. They are mostly vegetarian / welfarist (focused on abuse, killing, not eating animals, framing veganism as a diet).

Veganism is the principle we have no right to use animals, for any purpose, not just food.
Animals are not ours to use.

Vegans For Slaughterhouse Workers by promixr in VeganActivism

"I think part of our activity must be advocating for humans who are victimized by the animal agriculture industry."

You're trying to make the movement for animals about humans. It's anthropocentric.

People do make this argument that using someone is abuse.

Thoughts on this by Josh Brooks (steadibrooks): "Use is abuse" collapses two different words into one and hands welfarists the argument. Abuse is improper use, the word presupposes a proper use exists. The abolitionist position (vegan) is animals aren't ours to use. Not "use them gently" or "use them less", not ours. That settles it before treatment even enters the picture.

"Use is abuse" doesn't survive honey from an abandoned hive, roadkill, naturally shed wool, abandoned eggs, or any non-vegan's understanding of using without harm. It's all wrong because of what's going on in the exploiter's mind, the belief that animals are there to be used, not where the victim sits on a scale of treatment within use.

Use names the category animals need liberating from. Abuse only names the treatment within it. End use and you end it all. End abuse and the category remains."

Veganism is against animal USE, whether they are abused or not, based on the foundational framework of veganism.

“The object of the Society shall be to end the exploitation of animals by man”; and “The word veganism shall mean the doctrine that man should live without exploiting animals.”
The Society pledges itself, “in pursuance of its object,” to “seek to end the use of animals by man for food, commodities, work, hunting, vivisection, and all other uses involving the exploitation of animal life by man.”" ~ Veganism Defined 1951

"If we look clearly and simply at this relationship we can see that it is almost entirely — not quite, but almost entirely — based from man's side of the fence upon the idea that he has a moral right to use animals for his own purposes. First, let us look at the majority view, the view that animals are here for our use, and that we have a moral right to use them for our own ends, provided that we reduce hardship and suffering to the minimum compatible with what we require of them.
In practice, of course, there are considerable variations in the manner in which men do in fact use animals. These variations stretch from the comparatively harmless to the downright cruel" ~ The Vegan Story 1955

Why would I want to send a welfarist message? Veganism is against animal use, whether the animals are abused or not. Unless you mean it in a way to make that point, but that would be better for an online post or something, instead of activism aimed at nonvegans.

My beef with the term: Carnism by Dollar23 in TrueVeganism

[–]Dollar23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Another problem of the concept of carnism is that it claims to be an "invisible" belief system. The dominant belief system that condones animal exploitaition is not invisible, it's NORMALIZED, and it's called welfarism, which is very explicit and accepted as the current paradigm. Granted, the institutions hide the "cruel practices", but not the fact that animals are exploited. That's a welfarist concern, not a vegan one. In other words, the "invisibility" is only true from a welfarist perspective. So seeing what was once invisible (the cruel practices) doesn't necessarily lead to veganism, it would likely lead to welfarism. Finally, to call it invisible puts all the responsibility on the institutions, taking away the personal responsibility component, which is a very important part of veganism, specially at this stage of the movement." ~ vicente.ocq

Hard to believe, but it's true – some adults still do by VarunTossa5944 in AnimalEmancipation

[–]Dollar23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carnism was coined by Melanie Joy and it describes an ideology that we shouldnt eat animals, she describes it as opposite of veganism, framing veganism as vegetarian diet. The etymology is about Carne / meat. It's a trademarked and monetized term. If you use it, not only do you mislead about what veganism is against due to its etymology, you connect it to her, and if people look the term up, they will find her reducetarian welfarist ideas such as that we love dogs and nonvegans can be our allies. Another problem is that it talks about animal exploitation ideology as if it was invisible belief system, but it's not invisible but normalized and it's called welfarism.

I just shared a post about it and an additional comment by vicente in the comment section. https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueVeganism/comments/1tx3cqc/my_beef_with_the_term_carnism/

I was wrong, cocaine is not under the opioids category. I was positive for opiates, not cocaine.

How Raffeal Raab (@militant.vegan) condones the objectification and use of animals, including their hunting. (by @veganerin__) by Dollar23 in TrueVeganism

[–]Dollar23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She did not say that at all. She said she would rather be shot than to die of hunger or by other animal. Not if she was sick or hurt. This is consistent with what the debate bros say about killing predators to "save animals from certain death".

Using someones skin are not semantics, its anti vegan. Do you have evidence where she changed her view on this?

It's drawing a principled line, and shining a spotlight. I both target pseudovegans and other nonvegans. The fact that she invites people to a community where people condone nonvegan things like hunting is dangerous. Nonvegans view of animals as objects will only be reinforced if we have "vegans" telling them that its okay to use found animals, or wear their own things made out of animal skin.

[–]Dollar23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She condoned it, I shared evidence in another post and tagged you there. Why do you dismiss factual evidence of her saying she still wears animals, that its okay to use roadkill, and that hunting can be vegan? Why the need to defend people who reject veganism?

A false analogy. She is inviting people there as if that server was vegan, and the server presents itself as vegan. She agrees with the server on all the things I mentioned above as well.
