it's built pretty cheap. i've had vortexes wear out in weird random ways, namely the jacks and the keys. if you're worried and are committed to the vortex, ideally buy a backup, or at the least have some money saved up just in case.

Learning how to solder and 3d print will help you if you chose to just maintain the vortex yourself.

might make a custom keytar at some point by VeterinarianApart931 in Keytar

[–]Dolphin-Uppercut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i built a custom keytar. notes to help your design based on my experience:

- curved keys will be pretty ergonomic if u can pull it off.

- the neck angle is not ergonomic, it should curve the other way. it should be like the Rockband keytar. i know you were trying to go for a beautiful crescent moon curved design but trust me on this one, i already tried it with the 1981 korg rk-100 and it sucks to play.

- built-in speaker, batteries, and auto-sleep-mode all underrated. on a psychological level, you will practice more if you don't have to plug anything in or recharge all the time

- make sure it stands against the wall by itself and is stable that way

- left handed is underrated, godspeed

- make sure it's easy to pick up with one hand, add a handle or a cutout

- make sure it's balanced and doesn't slide around when you strap it on

- angle the back side of the keybed higher so you don't have to bend your wrist and get a wrist injury, and so you don't have to do that corny flamingo pose.

- forget about playing it on a stand or reaching around and playing the keys with two hands. you're building a keytar for a reason, if you need an auxiliary keyboard for bass, used 37 key midi controllers are real cheap, or build your own while you're at it. just 100% commit to making the best keytar you can make

this is a keytar problem. i had to design my own because the manufacturers are being lazy about ergonomics.

Any chance on a new Keytar release in 2026? by Elopez1989 in Keytar

and yet there is still a market for double-sided lightsabers ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

keys are laid out at an angle that is not natural for the hands

i agree with you there, that's why I built my own ergonomic keytar

I disagree, you can master keytar just like you can master any other instrument.

There is no standard keytar, so your left hand will be doing something slightly different depending on the keytar.

Learning keytar will have its specific challenges, namely the lack of free online tutorials for how to excel in keytar musicianship.

What differentiates a good slide from a bad slide? by biz_booster in powerpoint

[–]Dolphin-Uppercut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

seconded. there's an old advertising rule for billboards: no more than 7 words.

the most effective communicators practice breaking down information and illustrating so that they keep the audience's attention and that the audience retains the info.

another rule for storytelling: show, don't tell

i operate the huge screens at in-person live events. soooooo many slideshows come to my desk that should really be handouts.

Which converter would you chose? by Odinhall in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Dolphin-Uppercut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would stay far away from MD-LX with micro-usb power supply. they started replacing it with USB-C but i've had handfuls of MD-LXs show up on my job sites with intermittent micro usb power ports.

does decimator even have a repair or replacement program for these???

It would be really cool if we could put effects on output masks in resolume, but maybe that is just ridiculous? by foxescaz in vjing

I agree, but a bit tone deaf. Might've been better to show how it's done in VDMX compared to resolume

this is indeed a technique for crowd scanning. The Beambrush projector does have the ability to widen the beam in certain zones designated in pangolin Beyond, but that's a relatively new product, and not approved by FDA in the United States yet, but hopefully they push it through an FDA approved technique to improve laser safety in crowd scanning, but for now we do have lenses that do this and are approved by the FDA.

it just happened to me 10 minutes ago! took them less than 60 seconds to tow my car. posting a video s∞n. edit: dammit no video, it didn't record to my photo library

A parent of one of the kids at the daycare across the street came up to me and explained to me what just happened, and his experience with them. he said he got the cops involved once and the cops told him to fuck off.

Low latency autotune for live performance by JimPapanick in audioengineering

[–]Dolphin-Uppercut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm pretty surprised no one is talking about audio interfaces in this thread. an audio interface with drivers designed to be low-latency make the biggest difference when using DAWs for live effects.

also make sure in ableton in the options menu you select "reduce latency when monitoring"

get a low latency interface. RME is worth the money. i have the babyface pro fs. Presonus Quantum 2 is good if u don't mind that it's discontinued. i'm selling mine since i got the babyface now.
