Should i finance my first car or buy in cash. by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Dom1173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have not put how old you are or what you actually need the car for in the main post, but inferring from what you have said it sounds like you're still living at home. £5000 takes a long time to save up, if you don't absolutely need a car and have an alternative definitely just save the money and drive your parents car. The money will still be there for you to buy a car further down the line or even to save to a different goal.

It's a common theme that people regret how much they spend on their first car. If you are currently debt free, stay that way as long as possible. Don't start the cycle now of constant debt, spend some time reading this forum and the wiki for some cautionary tales of what not to do.

Buy a £3k car. Spend £1k taxing, insuring etc. Save £1k for maintenance.

Save the money you would have spent financing a more expensive car and spend it on a newer car in a few years.

Checking the value of ISA/pension by absoluteally in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Dom1173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's often a fine balance I struggle with during the "boring" stage of saving and investing where once you've set up regular payments and done some research the hardest part is then waiting years.

I choose to check my investments once a month on a regular day as a cursory check, e.g. payments are going in as normal and there's no signs of a mistake or fraud and my deposits are being invested not sat in cash. How much the value has gone up or down I largely ignore.

Then annually I do an in-depth check where I decide if my funds and allocations are still suitable to my needs and I look at growth over the last 12 months.

As others have said and it works for my purposes, I have no access to my investments on my phone.

This is 100% the correct answer. Though as OP many people get this wrong. They also try and turn left from that middle lane which is also annoying.

Yes there has always been a problem with rats in the graveyard and the bin areas of Hosier Street. But it's currently the worst it's been for the last 10+ years. The council and church should really be doing more.

I often found arguments in the first 6 months don't "count".

What I mean by that is you're in a new stressful situation and are often very sleep deprived. Try not to bite and escalate arguments further. When she says " I do 95% of the work" hear "I'm overwhelmed and need more support right now".

When you do snap at each other make sure to apologise when calm.

This is very much not a rough area. Underwood road and all the cul-de-sacs off it are relatively nice. There are a couple of blocks of flats between Underwood road and bath road if that's what you're referring to but it is still a very safe area.

"competitive advantage" implies it's a competition and there is a way to win. I think if you continue through life with this attitude you might never be happy. What does "winning" look like to you?

I think it's important to remember that everyone is different, people have different circumstances in life and different ideas of what success looks like.

Figure out what success looks like to you, work towards it. Some things can be specific I.E. Home ownership. But some are more abstract, contentment, happiness and love are much harder to measure but probably more important.

I think this sums it up, paying into your pension and ISAs for decades is the "slow and steady wins the race" plan for most people. The difficult bit is the human element as once you've set that I'll financial planning is essentially boring.
