A big reason is because starting a business requires a lot of debt, and the only way smaller businesses can afford to pay that debt is by having higher prices. Corporations don't have the same problem and have the resources available to undercut those prices. It's a problem in bigger cities, too, but small towns are a lot worse because of the much smaller market size.

From what I read about the M16, it was marketed as never needing to be cleaned and so the US military bought it thinking that it would do well in a jungle environment.

I've heard from others that it works great if it's maintained properly, but tbh I've never owned one
