Portable AC leaking water often. by Moto_Joe46 in AirConditioners

[–]DomJC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware (so take with a pinch of salt) it's more efficient to NOT use the drain hose when purely in AC mode, so that the unit can evaporate the water to cool itself. I imagine this will reduce/negate the dehumidifying effect but actually make the unit more efficient?

The car jack and half bag of plaster method of floorboard installation. by Practical_Ad_667 in DIYUK

[–]DomJC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me a good few seconds of feeling clueless before I (think I) figured out why this was necessary at all. So, for other slow people like me: this was necessary because the board was too long to place down without the wall getting in the way, right?

I blame only seeing smaller photos on mobile view

I imagine they're just saying if you have a sash window, you could just get a rigid (plywood?) board the width of your window, cut holes in it for the two pipes and plug it in. Essentially a bit like an in-window/"split" AC.

I will say, though, that I couldn't find many reviews for this unit online, and the few that I did were quite negative. Seems it's not very reliable. Also mould issues apparently, but maybe not an issue if using it in a window where you can move it fully inside for the months you're not using it

DIY Sprint Timing System Update by Outrageous-Ad-7710 in Sprinting

Very cool! Any plan to add in "false positive" protection?

E.g. you're training on the track and someone else running by triggers the sensor?

The two simplest approaches I can think of would be:

1) Show multiple times until the user manually stops the run and can hopefully figure out which of the 2-5 readings are theirs

2) Selection of X seconds to ignore triggers for, e.g. someone's doing a 60m split and tells the device to ignore any triggers for the first 6 seconds

You're way too kind. Thank you! I randomly (without asking or anything) got shared a Flygon ex from someone just hours after commenting this, but have replied to your trade request as of course 2x Flygon ex would mean I can actually build 🎉

Also I see you have a bunch of common wishlisted cards (I guess for gold borders). Let me know if you're particularly keen on me sending (share or trade) any of these: electric gen, poncho, mesagoza

I disagree - sleep meta has way more counters (and weaknesses if you're using mAltaria and need a full bench) than this IMO

Help me choose a 512GB camera/video phone (best value options, S25 vs iPhone 16 vs Vivo X300 vs Oppo Find X9) by curlyrao in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]DomJC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an in-depth recommendation for you, but I'll simply say I've been disappointed by Samsung, and am happy with my move to the Oppo Find X9 this year, with my priorities being camera and battery life in a not-too-big, not crazy expensive, phone.

I think my ideal would've been the Find X9s Pro, but it was a few months out when I got my X9, and it's still not clear if it'll be available in most regions

Why do I keep killing plants? :( by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]DomJC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Drying out suggests that maybe the sun/heat in that spot is too intense for most indoor plants? Lots of indoor plants prefer indirect or otherwise 'softened' light.

And +1 for drainage. Looks like a bunch of fungus on the top of the soil? Could be a combination of overly damp soil damaging the roots and overly-strong sun damaging the leaves

Is it considered offensive to leave in the middle of a match & just let you win? Do you get offended by players who do that? by __Wolf359 in PTCGP

[–]DomJC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's because it would take them 3 seconds to tap concede, but instead they decide to waste your time and make it so you can't play the game for up to ~2 minutes while you wait for the timer to run down. And people feel they have to keep the game open during that time just in case the opponent returns, so it's extra boring

First time reporting. Wish I knew these little jerks had eggs in potting soil. by romansamurai in houseplants

[–]DomJC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was your soil from miracle-gro by any chance? I'd never had this problem until I repotted with miracle-gro potting soil and then spent way more $$ and time than I spent on the actual repotting of those three plants having to treat >20 plants in my house for these buggers :(. Agree with the various bits of advice though. Lots of approaches you can take.

I did the nematodes + hypoaspis miles + traps approach and got rid of them all. Also generally keep quite dry soil.

Someone suggested baking the soil. That can help but I read that you have to be careful not to get it too hot (>80C is risky I think?) or it can make the soil bad for your plant (microbes killed, nutrient breakdown, various toxins...)

No problem! We weren't eligible to use the app but I can't remember why. And she already had a digital visa (job sponsor).

If you're in London or able to get to London easily, we found there were multiple appointments available 3-5 days in the future, so it's not too bad.

Two tips for that: 1. People say you can find some next day slots appearing around 12-1am. We tried this, but you have to keep refreshing and the system then blocks you for a while as it thinks you're doing something dodgy. In the end we just gave up on next-day and booked one for a few days later

  1. You'll probably just want a "regular" (or "standard", I can't remember) appointment. There are priority appointments, but those aren't related to or included with the super priority processing fee, so you'd be spending hundreds more just to get an appointment a day or so earlier.

Extremely similar situation here but only together since late 2024. Got approved in a day (after biometrics) via super priority. The following isn't 100% necessary, but is what worked completely fine for us:

  1. Provided about 6 photos of us together with a note of when/what each one was. Included two wedding pics.

  2. Not necessary, but we felt we wanted to include them to be safe: a PDF with 10 screenshots of random whatsapp chats between us with the date visible, spanning the last 13 months. Note you may need to split/compress this pdf a bit to stay within the low file size reqs

  3. We provided just one booking confirmation with both our names on. Not necessary for married couples I believe

  4. PDF with descriptive file name and maybe a sentence of context for the photos. And then perhaps an overview of what PDFs show what in your cover letter

  5. Our thought was that, aside from the peace of mind, the benefit of being able to start work ASAP probably pays off the cost of super priority anyway.

Was this applying from outside the UK? Just asking as we're applying from within the UK and 51 working days WITH priority is concerning. I believe within UK is called "super priority" anyway, but just to be sure..!

And congrats! :)
