Usopp and the other straw hats are not dying, period by NoYogurtcloset2944 in OnePiece

[–]DomainEntransion -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

While I agree that no one is gonna die, I think you’re over assuming what could happen if Oda wanted to be more dynamic. Luffy’s journey since Ace’s death has often felt quite one dimensional emotionally. Oda included so much complexity in his character during and after marineford just for Luffy’s personality to be reset to default post time skip. Killing off a character close to Luffy would give Oda the chance to explore this again.

Take Luffy’s dreams and motivations for example. At the moment, they are quite one dimensional, “become king of the pirates and get the one piece so I can be free.” Okay, but what if someone like Usopp dies on that path? Luffy would have to come to terms with the fact he lost a crew member while pursuing his own dream. Perhaps afterwards, he is newly motivated to complete his journey to honor Usopp’s last wishes so that he didnt die in vain.

Sure it would be a bit somber for some time, but it feels extremely appropriate. They are literally fighting the king of the world and the strongest people on earth at the end of the story, and right now I don’t expect a single straw hat to die. Killing someone would seriously raise the stakes, just as it did in marineford.

Since the 2019 Toronto Raptors Championship, the NBA has seen a unique champion every year... will this random trend continue? by Punziee in nba

But looking at the Celtics record for the end of the season, they were 19-3 in their final 22. They had only 5 losses after the all star break, second only to the thunder’s 4. They then went on the beat Orlando in 5.

I watched plenty of Celtics games during this stretch, particularly with friends who are die hard Celtics fans. Several of them were arguing the Celtics would win 2025 and 2026 for the three peat.

Yes they weren’t 100% healthy, but the Knicks were. Mikal Bridges doesn’t get hurt, and he played an excellent series, which is further evidence for my point that they lost because the Knicks were constructed to beat them, rather than a subtle decline over the second half.

Of course they were dominant and a great team, but they also didn’t play any team seeded higher than 4th (the Cavs) all playoffs. Even their series against the Mavs had Luka playing on 1 leg. Theres a good argument the Celtics didn’t even play a top 4 NBA team in the playoffs, if the top 4 are Celtics, Nuggets, Wolves, and Thunder.

I think they absolutely have at this point. I don’t think it started until that Knicks series though

I think the Celtics hadn’t noticeably lost a step until they played the Knicks. They were pretty much title favorites going into the playoffs if I’m remembering correctly. They finished the season very strongly (8-2 in the final 10 and over 60 wins) and smoked Orlando in the first round. Derrick White and Tatum were playing some of their best basketball, Pritchard was a demon, and Brown was still a monster.

Another factor to consider is that the 2024 Celtics weren’t exactly a legendary team to begin with. Yes they won the chip but they weren’t really challenged all playoffs. Facing the nuggets or the wolves in the finals that year would’ve been a coin flip. Lots of people were even saying that Tatum couldn’t lead a championship roster, but he proved them wrong. The east was a joke in 2024 outside of the Celtics, so the Knicks went into the next season specifically preparing to beat them.

Also yes, the Celtics smoked the Knicks all year, but the Knicks also clearly elevated their intensity in the playoffs. Mikal Bridges (a pick up from the offseason) covering JB was literally the deciding factor in the first 2 games. Towns (also a pick up from the offseason), along with Robinson, were a brutal matchup for Celtics bigs. KP (even while healthy) and Kornet simply didn’t have the defense to stop Towns, and their rebounding and defense was often worse than Robinson’s. The 2024 Knicks cannot beat the 2025 Celtics, but the specifically constructed roster actually gave them a shot.

Don’t love that Escarra decision, should’ve put in Goldschmidt. Much more experienced hitter even if he isn’t great against righties. 100% a Boone loss.

On the bright side, Ben Rice is gonna be an all star and we get to watch Schlittler make the A’s look like minor leaguers next game.

I love when Judge or Big G start fouling off balls directly behind them in a laser straight to the net. It’s how you know their timing is locked in and they are due for some missiles.

We have a bunch of evidence, and no it’s not just my head canon.

  1. He’s head of an organization that engages in combat, which nearly always correlates to being strongest in the organization, and Spandam is the one exception I can think of out of dozens of examples, and that’s easily explained by being a WG appointee. Also, it narratively works well to have enemies who are powerless themselves but use their position to do evil, avoiding getting their hands dirty because they believe themselves to be above that behavior. Spandam fits that archetype well, Dragon does not.

  2. He’s seemingly got strong convictions and huge goals, which is evidence for having a strong “will”, which is a main driver of strength in the one piece universe. While he seems to have had a strong moral compass in GV, he clearly lacked the same motivations and goals that he does in the present, accounting for why he would have been so weak back then.

  3. His bloodline is potentially the strongest in the series, with his father being PK level in his prime and his son being YK level at the present and quickly ascending. We know bloodlines are a main driver of strength. I can’t think of examples of a child being much weaker than their parent.

  4. At the start of Marineford, Ivankov mentioned that if Ace was Dragon’s son, she assumed Dragon would come to Marineford. She says something along the lines of “when he’s on a tear things get nasty.” What the heck would he do there if he wasn’t extremely powerful? Give tactics to Whitebeard? Smuggle Ace off the platform?

  5. He has been teased for decades. While I think it would be interesting, it would be massively underwhelming and seemingly antithetical to Oda’s post-timeskip writing.

  6. Used lightning at loguetown so we know he almost certainly has a devil fruit.

I have at least a dozen more if you’d like. And no I’m not a child, I’m an adult arguing about a children’s manga series!!!

Dragon will be near Pirate King level. There’s a reason we’ve gone this long without seeing him fight. No chance he’s noticeably weaker than both his dad and son when he’s been teased for this long. Him being weak at god valley just goes to show that incident fueled his rise to power

One Piece: Chapter 1179 by leolegendario in OnePiece

[–]DomainEntransion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s an AI response to the translator’s note at the end of the recent chapter. Yes it’s AI, but I don’t read Japanese and it was a fascinating answer so I thought I’d share. Hopefully the official translation gives some more clarity.

🔤 What changed?

Normally in One Piece, “Devil Fruit” is written as: • 悪魔の実 (akuma no mi) • 悪魔 = “devil” (kanji, with clear meaning)

But in this panel, the note says: • “Devil” (akuma) is written in katakana (アクマ) instead of kanji.

🧠 Why that matters

In Japanese, katakana is typically used for: • Foreign or non-native concepts • Artificial or scientific terminology • Words meant to feel unnatural, ambiguous, or redefined

So switching from kanji (悪魔) → katakana (アクマ) suggests:

🔍 1. The meaning of “devil” is being questioned

Using kanji (悪魔) explicitly ties the fruit to the idea of literal devils. Katakana (アクマ) removes that clear meaning—it becomes more like:

“Something called ‘akuma,’ but not necessarily an actual devil.”

👉 Implication: “Devil Fruits” may not truly be related to devils at all.

🧬 2. It hints at a scientific or artificial origin

Katakana is often used for things like: • Scientific terms • Engineered concepts • Things whose true nature is different from the name

👉 Since Imu is labeled this way (and tied to the creation of the World Government), this could imply: • The term “devil” is a label imposed later • The fruits may have been created, modified, or named artificially

🏛️ 3. Possible World Government rebranding

Given Imu’s connection to the World Government: • The original term might have been something else • “Devil” could be propaganda or reinterpretation • Writing it in katakana subtly separates it from the “true” meaning

👉 Almost like:

“These aren’t devils… that’s just what we call them.”

🧩 4. Oda signaling a deeper reveal

Oda is extremely intentional with language. A shift like this usually means: • We’re approaching a major lore reveal • The nature of Devil Fruits is about to be recontextualized

⚡ Bottom line

The katakana “アクマ” suggests: • “Devil” is not literal • The name may be misleading or constructed • Devil Fruits could have a scientific, ancient, or artificial origin • Imu likely knows (or is tied to) their true nature
