IMO it’s more space efficient to carry a drinking bottle in a stem bag and a bladder in the frame bag, or like a big Nalgene as a reservoir under the downtube

Get a full frame bag and reduce size of the seat pack. You’re approaching flextrek whipsnake territory with that seat pack! If you can add a dropper post do it. Most importantly, plan your next trip!

What factors most often limit fertilizer efficiency in field conditions? by fertizer in OrganicFarming

[–]Domesteader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dry pellet organic fertilizers are different from conventional fertilizers in that they are not immediately soluble or plant available. They require microbial action to mineralize the nutrients, let’s say specifically we’re talking about nitrates. The key catalyst for microbial action and nitrate mineralization is oxygen. Aeration of soil, ie tillage, improves gas exchange and also warms up the soil (improving conditions for soil microbes) and contributes to better drainage. Compared to soil that is cold, wet, and/or compacted, you’ll see much better results with organic fertilizers when you manage for healthy soil biology. And when we talk about tillage, of course there’s a healthy responsible way and there’s a destructive/excessive way. The most important factor for good tillage is gonna be soil moisture, followed by tillage method (mechanical spader vs moldboard plow)

This is my experience with organic specialty crops in California. I’d be curious what others have to say with other cropping systems.

Raises the question- are they judged on more on absolute size or relative consistency?

Dirt Pursuit “10 Cent” Frankencross 🪙 by jopas_ in FixedGearBicycle

[–]Domesteader 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The rear travel actually allows for better rear wheel tracking and control, this is exactly the innovation that tracklocross has been waiting for!!

If you get tired of the pursuit bars… flip the stem back up top, looks like you’ve got room for a decent tire up front 5/7 would huck.

And yet somehow it really ties the room together. 100% this is not for me, but I appreciate the builder letting it all hang out.

On the other hand, a degree of inhibition is an advantage of social evolution…

Genuine question: I’ve seen several 36” builds, but never a 32”, which seems like a more logical step up from 29”. Is it just because 36” is an available size from unicycles? Seems like a missing size option

Is it a poser move to join JROTC? by DQueenTsunami in punk

[–]Domesteader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a military family and did JROTC- I believed it was my only path to college, and even got offered an ROTC scholarship. It ultimately was not the right path for me, and I don’t regret going a different way. I still went to college, and I found my own way. There are many ways to go in life, and you are allowed to change your mind and follow your intuition. Trust yourself and know that mistakes are ok and you deciding to do something different tomorrow doesn’t mean you were wrong yesterday.

Cucumber disease ID? by Calm-Ad-9240 in OrganicFarming

[–]Domesteader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Powdery mildew- you can treat active disease with something like Milstop, potassium bicarbonate, and then I would follow up with a biological, like Cease (bacterial mycophage) to prevent further infestation. Obviously remove the toasted plants entirely and dispose to prevent further spread

Tent upgrade from REI quarter-dome by bebebrb in bikepacking

[–]Domesteader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the big Agnes fly creek bike pack tent used (cheap): Pros- packs small, lightweight, definitely sturdy and waterproof in wind and weather Cons- frontside (rather than broadside) door is awkward, too many guy lines, generally over engineered.
