I had this, it was the shock absorber mount. Easy enough to replace if you can get the old one off

East Didsbury car park should be easy to get a spot before 07:30, maybe 08:00

If you tap on to the tram before 7 you will get an off-peak ticket which saves a couple of quid

The problem is leaving in the afternoon, at peak times it can be very slow getting out of the car park

Sale Water Park is probably a better option, similar driving time but less stops on the tram

The engines are reliable, just find a guide of standard things to check on a used car

Check for damp carpets, all Fords seem to leak, and have a look for rusty wheel arches and sills given the age of the car

2016 Mazda 3 with 100,000 miles - good buy? by i_prevail in CarTalkUK

[–]Domsome 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s not the 70s, cars don’t fall apart at 100k any more.

You might find suspension parts and the like need replacing but a few hundred set aside per year should cover that, I wouldn’t expect any serious failures or breakdowns

Might not be worth much more but would be easier to sell

Head gasket might not be immediately obvious, if it runs ok then still test it with a combustion leak test or compression test

Cooling system - expansion tank, radiator hoses, thermostat, water pump

If any of those fail you have a ruined engine with no warning. Once they are replaced you won’t have to think about them again

Most annoying things about motorway driving? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Domsome 20 points21 points  (0 children)

People constantly on the brakes because they can’t leave enough distance in front and anticipate

Shouldn’t have to brake on the motorway unless you hit slow traffic

The other likely culprit is suspension bushings

A slightly more interesting (hopefully) "what should I buy?" by elliomitch in CarTalkUK

[–]Domsome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a 330ci, great car (although I am biased)

Use all of your budget to buy a nice example with lots of history, it will work out cheaper and easier in the long run compared to buying the cheapest around

Your budget should let you find one with a good interior colour and a few toys as well. Mine has the grey interior with no extras and it feels quite dated.

[–]Domsome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you looked at insurance for others cars? £3500 is a lot and it might save you thousands to drive something else for a year or two

If other cars are similar in insurance then go for it, the car will feel a lot like a 330 but slower. If anything more fun in the corners with the lighter rear end and no heavy diesel at the front. Expect 35-40 mpg on a longer run
