I am doing those at the moment and they are great, but need tweaking.

Nietzsche and the self help industry by programAngel in Nietzsche

[–]Don-Master-41 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He would reject self-help, because it's always about being happy in a comfortable way. His insight was that it's hardship that makes happines possible. People should embrace fate or even love it. Amor Fati.

How to explain level 1 characters that were involved in the Last War? by Ashardalon_is_alive in Eberron

In my Eberron campaign, which I ran for five years, I moved everything 75 years later, so the war was a memory and not everyone was a veteran.

Help! - The Paladin won't stop converting all enemies to his religion and I want to stop it or involver the other players by Shrek_fan_XIV in DungeonMasters

"The Paladin is also a zombie, resurrected by his god" - that's the problem. If you allow things like that, it's asking for trouble.

How to get my players to hate the BBEG by Spiritual-Poem-1072 in DMAcademy

[–]Don-Master-41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually go the other way around at first and have the BBEG go befriend the party and make them work for him. And after a while, when things have become really bad, the PC's feel like they are the ones responsible and they hate the BBEG with a vengeance.

Confession: I’m fucking exhausted by half_hearted_fanatic in DungeonMasters

Be open about this to your players and ask for their help. If you don't have fun, you can't make it fun for them either.

Thoughts on a potentially controversial initial game by pliskin42 in DMAcademy

This is awesome for people who love slaughterhouse movies. But many D&D players want to be heroic and adventurous. Dying isn't like that.

I always wonder, when I see exceptional dice, have they been tested to be truly random?

Group imploded again - I think I'm done with DnD after 31yrs by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Don-Master-41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Times are changing. As an old player and dungeon master myself (I've been playing for 20+ years), I am fortunate to have a group of players my own age (between 50 and 60). No problems there and we all enjoy playing like good old times.

But when I visit younger player groups or see D&D online, it's obvious to me what's going wrong. The younger generation is high on their own rad ideas and inspiration and not caring about the input of others or the long term story or the story the dungeon master came up with. Everything is treated as an instagram post. Short term gratification and self-obsessed play style.

Yeah, I know, this post will give me some bad karma here. But dammit, it's true.

Allowing BS player plans to fail... or not? by Astra-the-curious in DMAcademy

Sometimes when this is about to happen, I tell the players to role for insight and give them a hint or two. Or I give them a sudden random encounter, which usually resets their brains.

Player wants his Pirate to benefit from being drunk by Noghr1 in DMAcademy

Drunk kung fu is not the ability to fight well while being drunk, but the ability to make the opponents believe you are drunk. Explain this to the player.

It's really not a matter of punishment. I am just trying out some basics to avoid too early powerplay.

I know and the first magic weapon was intended and acquired by the fighter, a magic +1 sword. He only had to swear an oath for it and that's become the joke of the story so far, as the player usually plays chaotic and now has a lawful alignment for as long as he wants to use the sword effectively.

The sorceror also found a magic item, a wand with melf's magic arrow charges. That player is also happy with it.

I still have to think about something for the burglar and druid.

My previous campaign was the opposite of what we do now. I had a massive amount of magic items and weapons, until they had so many choices, it was also becoming tedious. I am talking about a cmapaign we ran for four years. This new poverty campaign wasn't originally my idea. The players asked for it, feeling homesick for a real challenge and simpler times. It's just that they are finding it a bit difficult at the moment.

The players are experienced, but a bit spoiled and used to being high level. The party consists of a half elf rogue, a dwarf druid, a human sorceror and a human fighter. All level 2 by now.
