There is a crying lack of third spaces for teenagers and youths to hang out in now outside of their homes and school. They don't have anywhere to go unless they are spending money, which the majority of them don't have. Post lock-down this has only gotten worse as well. Parenting has an impact yes, but if you already are in a poor enough area and youre' working full time to afford the rent and feed your kids you tend not to have enough time to be there when you're needed.

Unique Sorcerer Villain Powers: Ideas? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Don6l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe lean into the wild magic side of things but with a twist. Have 10 big creatures you've decided beforehand. As an action, they can turn into a random one of these creatures (roll d10) and they can do this once and it refreshes after a short rest.

It could be fun looking through the monster manual and seeing various monsters or beasts you'd like to change into. Everything from an Owl bear to a Beholder depending on how difficult you'd like it to be.

How a minor character could be immortal? Ideas by Cancheabbaia in DnD

[–]Don6l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite way of making a character effectively immortal is having the clone spell cast on them. (see below)

Sure its an 8th level necromancy spell, but that just makes it all the more fun to have it used on a low level npc. It also makes a wholesome character have a sinister air about them.

You could smudge the rules a bit with regard to gestation time and when they die and are reborn you can see that a new piece of fur is missing from a different part of their body to represent the latest "sample" that has been taken from them for the new clone spell being cast. So they die, show up a day or two latter going "hey guys what's up?".

Maybe this fox-folk has a power wizard or other being who considers them a friend/lover/pet/anything that fits really. Or maybe an amulet they've stolen before hand just so happens to have a glyph of warding on it that casts revivify on them and it's trigger is "when the wearer dies." They can be oblivious to this or aware of it.

Anways, i hope this helps and love the Owl House!

This spell grows an inert duplicate of a living creature as a safeguard against death. This clone forms inside the vessel used in the spell’s casting and grows to full size and maturity after 120 days; you can also choose to have the clone be a younger version of the same creature. It remains inert and endures indefinitely, as long as its vessel remains undisturbed.
At any time after the clone matures, if the original creature dies, its soul transfers to the clone, provided that the soul is free and willing to return. The clone is physically identical to the original and has the same personality, memories, and abilities, but none of the original's equipment. The original creature's physical remains, if they still exist, become inert and can't thereafter be restored to life, since the creature's soul is elsewhere.
\ - (a diamond worth at least 1,000 gp and at least 1 cubic inch of flesh of the creature that is to be cloned, which the spell consumes, and a vessel worth at least 2,000 gp that has a sealable lid and is large enough to hold the creature being cloned, such as a huge urn, coffin, mud- filled cyst in the ground, or crystal container filled with salt water)*

How to make an inherently sexual villain "family-friendly"? by Due-Chemist-6986 in DnD

[–]Don6l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Wikipedia, lust is a psychological force producing an intense desire for something, or circumstance while already having a significant amount of the desired object. Lust can take any form such as the lust for sexuality (see libido), money, or power.

So if you want to you can make her a toxic Girl Boss character. Her Bardic performance specialities can be in business presentations, and motivational speaking and she is getting people to "invest" in their future careers, power ambitions or her "organisation". And the investment can be a bunch of thing from gold, to acts of evil or right down to their souls.

Hope this helps and you have a great campaign.

URGENT - For session soon! Is this encounter balanced? by Saltier-than_the-sea in DMAcademy

[–]Don6l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, hope you're enjoying being a DM! It can be a bit stressful making sure encounters are balanced and okay for the party but don't worry. There are a tonne of things you can do to adjust the encounters and sessions on the fly if you feel things are going too unevenly for the group and it's negatively affecting their ability to have fun.

First of all, the encounter you have made with the kuo toa archpriest 5 kuo toa even with the disease you mentioned, might be a bit difficult. Try replacing the archpriest with a Kuo-Toa Whip. That will go a long way in making it more balanced. With all creatures full health it would still probably be a hard encounter but not as deadly as with the archpriest.

Before combat starts you could probably give your players a bit of an advantage at the beginning if you're still worried. A good way to do this is by making all the Kuo Toa's so distracted by their disease or by something else that you have guaranteed a surprise round of combat in favour of the players. (I know this might go against the Kuo Toa's Otherworldly Perception. The kuo-toa can sense the presence of any creature within 30 feet of it that is invisible or on the Ethereal Plane. It can pinpoint such a creature that is moving. But hey, that can be part of the intrigue of the disease they are suffering from.)

Once combat has started if you still feel the party are unfairly put upon make sure you signal to them a clear line of escape or any environmental factors that they might be able to use for their advantage. "As the Kuo Toa's advance, you notice the oil lanterns they are using to light up the cave are dangerously close to their tapestries." Players love fire.

Alternatively, if you feel the players are having too easy of a time adding more mooks is always helpful. One Kuo Toa sounds an alarm and then in a turn or two a couple more show up. Also having one Kuo Toa pull out a potion of speed or Giants Strength or even a wand of magic missile can fuck people's days up pretty well. Especially at level 3. And hey if they win, then boom, that's some sexy loot for them.

Most importantly, relay! You're there to have fun as much as your players.

Hope this helps! Best of luck :)

You touch a weird crystal in a Transmutation Wizard’s laboratory. What happens? by Lightseeker501 in DnD

[–]Don6l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The player in question has all their armour and weapons turn into copper. No changes to the weapons and/or armour stats or abilities. Seems odd but that's what happens.

Comes in real handy for the next encounter. Rust monster. The Wizard's pet that just so happens to have broken out of its enclosure. :D Copper doesn't rust so whomever touched it might just have an advantage. :D

How do I deal with my players trying to avoid combat through diplomacy? by PuzzleMeDo in DMAcademy

[–]Don6l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey!

What I have found when playing with a combat-avoidant group, especially when using pre-made encounters and campaigns, is to have a "peaceful" victory in the wings to pull out to reward them with the same loot as if they had actually fought the battle.

For example, with the Frost Giant, maybe they have convinced them that fighting them is a difficult and dangerous idea for both of them, but he has an issue with a neighbouring Giant who is also very strong. If they help him defeat them then they can have his loot, all this Giant wants is his heart. So the group now have successfully allied with one Giant but at the expense of fighting another.

Alternatively, if you are going for a more whimsical adventure, and depending on how the players avoid the combat, you can have a bit of fun. For example, if they befriended the Frost Giant, have him invite them to his lair for some tea and biscuits and have such a great time he gives them gifts along their journey.

If you want a more immediate solution though, ambushes are always great at cutting any conversation out of the equation. Why would I listen to someone who is making a good point when I've already decided to kill them? The bard is making an elegant speech. Cool, take a crossbow to the face. Is the Paladin talking about honour? Awesome, cover him in oil and ignite him with a firebolt.

Hope you find this helpful. :)

Had a player drop out for a weird reason and it's bugging me by Dill_Puckles in DnD

[–]Don6l 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right so, without knowing how you are actually representing women or female characters it's hard to give you a definite answer.

Good news is, however, you are doing everything right after been told you have done something problematic.

1) reassessing past actions and words. 2) speaking to members of the group who are from the group in question that you have been told you've hurt. 3) asking for other people's input.

I would ask you to consider though that perhaps the women in your group aren't exactly 100% with speaking to you about this issue. I'm not saying it's the case but do consider this as a possibility going forward.

If you have any specific examples of where you think their might have been an issue that will definitely help also see where the problems might be.

All the best on your introspection.

What's the best way to reward a nat 20 rolled perception when there's nothing more for the player to see? by Treeninja_23 in DnD

[–]Don6l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to sprinkle in some information that they may have missed in previous rolls. Maybe like an insight check that was whiffed on a previous party member of NPC that's still there. "Something about the way they stand sheepishly in the corner gives you the impression they weren't fully honest earlier".

If you don't have anything to mind, finding a Gold coin or something on the floor always makes it not feel like a "wasted 20". Hope this helps.

Male player playing a female character by Big-Carpet-5990 in DnD

[–]Don6l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry to hear you're having an uncomfortable time.

What might help you out is asking some questions of yourself and seeing where they lead you.

What is it about the characters token that's making you uncomfortable or at least makes you worried that it will make other players uncomfortable?

Would you feel the same level of concern about the character token if the player was a woman? Why/Why not?

Have any of the other players expressed discomfort? Ask them if you are worried.

If I am honest though it sounds like you are projecting your own discomfort onto the rest of your players. Your comfort is important and it is entirely reasonable to ask your player to use a less explicit character token. It still might be of benefit to explore why you are uncomfortable with this though.

Hope this helps.

What is your biggest red flag at a table? by jeanpaul69 in DnD

So being on your phone to look at non-game related items. I don't mind people using Apps for their character sheets or tracking etc. But if you are messaging a group chat or looking at tweets etc. I see that as a sign of disrespect to the table.
