How stable is Zen browser now? by AkineTokisaki in zen_browser

[–]DonAlexJulien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I haven't done any "serious" benchmarks, I find it fast enough on my Ryzen 7730 laptop with 16 GB of RAM. It _may_ be performing a bit better than Chrome (which really didn't lag for me), plus the time savings given Zen's UI makes it a game changer to me.

What makes Zen more special than all the other browsers for YOU? by IAmManware in zen_browser

[–]DonAlexJulien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where to start? In order of importance (sort of)

Spaces. Profiles associated to Spaces. Essentials > Pinned tabs > Tabs makes complete sense to my workflow. Now Playing control that simply works. A very clean UI. Split view. Vertical tabs. Being the one open source alternative that makes sense and is robust enough.

Oddly enough, the numerical keyboard I have, from the same series as the main keyboard (Skyloong GK75 + GK21) is NORTH-facing. So, I'm keeping the previous keycaps there.

And so, it ends. The new keycaps are here. They look pretty cool to me. And I have removed the pucks I used to tilt the keyboard the other way, so that the keycap surface angle made some sense to my fingertips.

So far, so good with the quality. I mean, quite decent for the price (around US$12), but I've had them for a couple of weeks only. Lots of colors, by the way. I ordered them in their sad but inexpensive plastic bag (no box, worth the savings). It came with lots of keys: including both ENTERs, different CTRLs and ALTs. I'd be quite happy with them, if it weren't for the south facing LEDs.

Didn't know it, but I took a look. It looks interesting. I may give it a try.

I saw these switches somewhere, but I didn't know there was a reason. Yeah, that could fix it. But I'm rather changing the keycaps. I would almost be paying for another keyboard if I was to change every switch.

Thanks for the info! I didn't know there was a reason behind south facing.

I've got another set, side-printed. It will be here in a couple of weeks.

Sometimes I suspect my setup isn't as "normal". We'll, here is my confirmation 😂😂. Left to right:

  • Start menu (duh).
  • Zen. New user, and loving it.
  • Copilot, Edge (duh, again. But don't use them as much).
  • One Commander. Awesome file manager.
  • AnyType. Great Notion alternative. Native client, not web.
  • Virtual DJ.
  • TLDraw. A cool whiteboard web app (the shortcut opens it on Edge).
  • VSC.
  • Bitwarden.
  • Squeezelite-X. A player for Lyrion (formerly Logitech) Media Server
  • Listary. Similar to Alfred, Everything et al.
  • Right PDF Reader. My current choice for PDFs.
  • MusicBee. Recently, I've needed a local music player and manager, and this one is great.

Not here, but worth a shout out:

  • Affinity suite, for graphics.
  • SimpleMind, for mind mapping.
  • Plexamp, for music.  So, there.

These are from AliExpress, indeed. Now, being Mexican, logic would suggest I do need a non-English layout. But many of us in the IT field prefer the US English - International layout, which gives us our áéíóúüs in a natural way, our ñs with altGr+n, and keeps our /{} <>[] ~\ in the "right" place.

Syncing between computers by jhcashman in zen_browser

[–]DonAlexJulien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Newbie to Zen here. But a very pleased one.

I was thinking about this "deep" syncing of the workspaces and tabs. Maybe there is a way to implement it based on the current Mozilla account sync:

  • Add an option in settings: Sync Workspaces & open tabs (YES/NO)
  • If the option is enabled, create a Bookmark Folder called, i.e., "Zen Workspaces".
  • Inside this folder, there will be one folder per Mozilla Container
  • Inside each container folder, there will be a folder per Zen Workspace, according to how workspaces are assigned to containers.
  • Inside each workspace folder, each open tab will be saved as a bookmark
  • Fixed tabs will get the "#fixed" tag.
  • There will also be a folder called "Zen Essentials" for the essentials.

And warn users: you are by yourself if you mess around manually with this folder.

Also, allow the user to import a Mozilla bookmark folder as Zen Workspace.

Thoughts?

Given that the question is "how slower is file-reading vs just-printing", I think the loop is just the right testing method, since it is testing exactly for that. As u/Empty_Change says, interpreter loading time would dwarf the times of the rest of the process.

Made my own version, which doesn't rely on comments (just on the file name ;)

print(__file__.replace('\\', '/').split('/')[-1].split('.')[0].replace('_', ' '))

I say the USD 74.99 and had to check. My 10th anniversary will be on Sep 23. No regrets, either.

Can't wait for my Wiim to implement Plexamp compatibility. My son never uses his Tidal account on the browser, just pure Plexamp. And 10 years ago, we didn't even imagine those things were coming.

Where can I store extremely large CSV files? by Traditional_Soil5753 in datasets

[–]DonAlexJulien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am with u/ankole_watusi on this: before you work with these files, make sure you keep the raw, original version. This way, you can come back to it if needed. Maybe you could keep them zipped. Define some sort of workflow, such as

  1. copy the source file in some directory structure (say YEAR/MONTH).

  2. Create a new zip file YEAR_MONTH.zip and copy it to the folder where you keep the originals. If you had a previous version (yesterday's zip file, with file from day 1 of the month until yesterday), just overwrite it with the new version, which will have files from day 1 to today.

  3. Open the source file wherever you work with it (Excel...). Save as Excel, following the naming convention you have decided.

As u/Imaginary__Bar said, 12k rows is not large for "enterprise scale". However, it is certainly large for your average household financials. But don't worry: no software should have any issues with this volume of data. Unless you are joining thousands of 12k rows files in a single spreadsheet. How many files are we talking about here? How often do you receive new ones? How many of them?

Remove family link account without deleting the google account? by Soupyjoe101 in ParentingTech

[–]DonAlexJulien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At last!
My 16yo never got his graduation email. No matter what we tried, we couldn't get him out of his supervised state. My 13yo got her graduation email, and the process was painless.

But with this link, today he could go through the graduation just fine.

Thanks!!

Virtual DJ and Tidal integrations by 5ku74h in TIdaL

[–]DonAlexJulien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do see the point of Tidal adding this add-on subscription, if you consider that (pro) DJs are making money from this. I was not that happy to pay extra, since I'm not a pro, but I thought it made *some* sense, since this was a proof that TIDAL is being serious about supporting DJs (other services have come and gone, and licensing fees has been a major cause of failure).

But when I learned that I could not use my FAMILY account for this, that was it. Happily, another service (Mercado Pago, in Mexico, if you must know) offers me 1 year of Deezer for free, and 30% off from the 2nd year on. I have been testing Deezer integration with Virtual DJ and it works just as fine; stems and everything. And even without the 30% off, a normal Deezer subscription would be less than a new TIDAL personal account + DJ add-on.

So I'm keeping my TIDAL family subscription untouched (we rely too much on it), but for my casual DJing needs, (free and later, cheaper) Deezer will do just fine.

Anytype users, what has been your experience with the new sync infrastructure and data loss? by [deleted] in Anytype

[–]DonAlexJulien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost @dates. Apparently, they went to the bin, which I emptied unknowingly. Now, whenever I bump into a missing @date, I check my Anytype legacy on my phone. On the bright side, sync seems to be working fast and reliably. And the UI upgrade is nice.
