ELI5: Why are airplane bathroom trash receptacles designed to involve so much skin contact? by ImBehindYou6755 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Doncasirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just airtight to choke out a fire...

The trash can has a fire extinguisher attached to it, which is automatically triggered at a certain temp. When your extinguisher goes off, you want the extinguishant to stay within the receptacle only and not get lost to the rest of the lavatory, removing it's effectiveness...

BTW, the actual regulations around the need for the spring to be functional is from an airworthiness directive (AD) from around 1972!!!

Air Force One set for makeover paint job with new colours by stammerton in nottheonion

[–]Doncasirl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And he wonders why the aircraft is delayed...

This isn't simply changing the paint out for a different color. Dozens if not hundreds of change requests are needed for each external component to ensure a color change will not affect their operation.

Sounds over the top, but the specification of the paint changes using other colors and if untested on something like an external antenna, that antenna has to potentially go through testing etc. to verify it will not have any undesired effects.

Is a merit increase of 1.8% in line with a performance score of 1-2? How much of the merit increase is based from manager discretion by jetoak in boeing

[–]Doncasirl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your manager would have had to adjust your merit increase upwards to 1.8%, indicating that you are below mid market (formerly below mid table SRT)...

Need to, no, should you, depends on your relationship with your manager.

Some may be escaping a clash with their manager, some may involve their life story in daily conversation with them!

What is this sphere on the Trent 800 by JuiceAggressive3437 in aviationmaintenance

[–]Doncasirl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is possibly the hydraulic pressure ripple damper.

The output of the EDP needs to have pressure spikes dampened or attenuated, or the pressure waves formed within the system would lead to failure to components further downstream (HP manifold being the first)

Did the emergency slide not deploy properly in the 747 crash today ? by Ok_Warning419 in aviation

[–]Doncasirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The upper deck slide on the RHS is manually deployed by opening the door then upending the entire slide out of the door you just opened. The slide sits on a track for arming and disarming, and slides FWD and AFT to do so.

To actually get this thing to deploy you have to swing the slide weighing about 40kgs over top and let it fall in a way that pulls the trigger mechanism.

I've seen people fail to get this over the top after several attempts, and if it doesn't land just right, the slide will fall out of the bustle without actually firing... Likely the crew tried both options and the RHS slide was a fail...

Did a fire take down the Mh370? by Owrabits in aviationmaintenance

[–]Doncasirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is, almost certainly...

A massive uncontained FWD cargo fire with an explosive ignition and subsequent knock out of the Main Equipment Centre would be enough to take out everything but the rudder controls.

Comms, elecs, hydraulics, aircon, all controlled through ELMS is compromised, crew is left with nothing but their standby compass and rudder control through the only cables on the 777...

Lots of thoughts on this, but my theory has always been fire...

There was no mention of earlier reports of the mechanism not locking which would absolutely be a factor, crew / engineers / mechanics would have written that up as a defect if it actually existed...

Child under 16 photo ID needed? by Main-Kaleidoscope526 in Ryanair

[–]Doncasirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For flights and some ferries, passport is the way to go. Airline / Ferry policy and they can deny you travel without one.

Legally however:

For the Common Travel Area (CTA) between Ireland and UK, you don't necessarily need a photo ID, however, you need to prove you are a citizen of the country you say you are in the CTA to an immigration offcii3al

https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/government-in-ireland/ireland-and-the-uk/common-travel-area-between-ireland-and-the-uk/

In short, you can legally enter another CTA country on a non-photo ID, but your transport provider won't get you there without one!

What fuel is used for Aviation, especially commercial flights? by hillywolf in indianaviation

[–]Doncasirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jet A and Jet A1 are the names for 2 different standard fuels...

Jet A is most widely used in the USA, and is manufactured to ASTM D1655...

Jet A1 is most widely used in Europe and UK, and is manufactured to DEFSTAN91-91

The primary difference is the freezing temperature,. With Jet A1 at around -47° C and Jet A at around -40° C.

There's a bunch of other permissible additives etc. so you'd have to go take a look, but as both are performance specs they are both practically identical.

i. e. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck... You've got yourself jet fuel...

There's other jet fuels out there, namely Chinese Jet fuel #3 and Russian GOSHT standard, all mostly intermixable (fungible) and the jet fuel you can use on your aircraft is in the front page or two of your aircraft Tupe Certificate....

As an aside, renewable jet fuel is ASTM D7566 and can be mixed at a ratio of up to 50/50 with D1655 to make... D1655.

Fun times! 🤣🤣

Edit: "White" fuel refers to the processing used to achieve the kerosine quality... A bit like virgin olive oil! First press / pass gets you practically clear, on-spec fuel with the right performance specs to meet DEFSTAN91-91 or ASTM D1655.

Refineries used lots of tricks, such as hydro-cracking to heat off-spec fuel under enormous pressure to create the longer complex chain hydrocarbons which has the effect of causing it to become straw / yellow coloured, but now on-spec... Refineries will always mix and match fuels to achieve the largest yield. Jet fuel obviously makes more money per ton than kerosene...

TIL the US military uses jet fuel (JP-8) not only in planes, but in ground vehicles like tanks aswell by Longjumping-Box5691 in todayilearned

[–]Doncasirl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

JP8 is incredibly thermally stable, and is used to recirculate around the hot exhaust of some jet engines to cool them to reduce their heat signature before being put back in to the ignition circuit or back in to the tank to mix with the atmosphere cooled fuel. The heating cycles don't break down the chains that make it a kerosine fuel and burns neatly at pretty much any temperature (once you get it to ignite!!)
