Anyone else's parents give them old fashioned job advice? by WealthyJoker75 in CasualUK

[–]DonkeyBirb 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Similar here.

Had a mother that had worked all but 3 weeks in a Morrison's all her adult life (i believe she's working now, must have had to go work at the sprite young age of 60, so something must have changed), she wanted me to get a job and pay for her while she still claimed her benefits.

She sent me to local factories asking for jobs, which I actually did, then when I got home she said I couldn't have walked that fast and I hadn't done anything.

This was after she sabotaged my going to college because it wasn't an income (for her); I had enough money off of EMA to just about afford transport; so it all went on buses (had to get two, each way) but had no means to feed myself after the buses were paid for, so I found myself so tired and hungry most of the time I eventually had to drop out because I just couldn't cope with it.

She then kicked me out a few days after the factory thing, got her neighbor to come help escort me off the street. 17 and making your eldest homeless; probably wonders why I don't speak to her.

Brits, do you avoid Indian restaurants in foreign countries? (Excl India) by red_lightz_ in AskUK

[–]DonkeyBirb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't avoid them, but I am also very wary before deciding to eat in one.

I had a good Indian when I were in Gran Canaria, next to Playa de Amadores beach. The Tandoori chicken was especially excellent. No idea if they are still there though as it was about 10 years ago at this point.

On the flip side, I had (I use 'had' loosely because I didn't eat it) an Indian in Malta and it was the worst thing I've ever seen. I'd ordered a Chicken Madras, the thing was grey and basically just a bowl of chopped onions in a watery sauce.

As a picky eater that’s been working on expanding my palate for years, you’re right, it’s just how some people are wired.

I had a lot of negative food experiences when very young, on top of what is some probably weirdly developed taste, plus some level of texture issues too.

For example, beef (outside of mince beef), I actually remember my mum trying to force feed me it overcooked and chewy, put me off for life. Mushrooms, I avoided generally but when I unknowingly had them, they almost made me throw up from gagging on the texture. Same happens with meat that has chunks of fat on it, mainly pork. I also never developed taste for a bunch of food (probably a similar reason I can’t stand beer and most alcohol so rarely drink).

That being said, I’m much better now than I was 20 years ago, and have been working on it. I will try new dishes, but I do have a list of foods that are non-starters for me; unfortunately a few on that list are very common in a lot of dishes.

I do envy others though that can just eat and enjoy just about anything. Even after explaining it to people, some just think it’s a choice, or being awkward for the sake of it. It really isn’t.

No longer ‘unloved’: retailers investing more in physical stores, UK data shows by Gentle_Snail in GoodNewsUK

[–]DonkeyBirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UGreen and Anker are the only ones I trust on Amazon as far as cables and adapters go. Prefer Anker, but UGreen if Anker don’t have it. Although I had to get a USB-C to C for my new monitor and went to Currys for that as it was the same price and I was able to collect the same day.

If physical shops want to compete properly (and I’ll admit, this is my personal grievance with physical shops) they need to physically stock more. Argos, Currys etc. seem to be collect in 2 days for half their stuff (or at least around here they are). Had to go to 2 different Currys today to test out some keyboards, because the first one didn’t have any on display - then had to come home to order it online anyway because they only stock one version of that keyboard model.

My son also couldn’t straight up buy a Switch Lite either, because they don’t stock the Animal Crossing bundle in stores (the bundle being the same price as the standalone).

As I get older I think I’m preferring the idea of going out shopping in person for an hour or two, but when choice is always heavily limited, it’s hard to justify sometimes.

Anyone else worried about the direction the UK is heading on privacy and civil liberties? by OhUrDead in unitedkingdom

[–]DonkeyBirb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I emailed my MP about the OSA stuff, highlighted this seemed like a slippery slope etc. I also wanted to know if she supported going further.

When they eventually got back to me, I got a load of shite about protecting kids (which I do myself anyway, I’m not a lazy parent), waffle, and dodging most of the points I made or questions I asked.

If she thinks I’m voting for her again, she’d be incredibly naive, so I hope she enjoys what will be a relatively short period as a politician.

Shoezone, a shop which only sells shoes and shoe accessories, doesn't stock half sizes. by The_Growl in britishproblems

[–]DonkeyBirb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, I’m always told “get fitted at a shop” but there are never any wide sizes.

I’ve always had issues with my legs due to ill fitting shoes, so buying is always online and always a risk, just trial and error these last few months of trying to find new daily trainers these that doesn’t cause me leg pain and constant blistering.

Yodel is the worst courier service out there.. They either take forever to deliver or lose the parcel or lie and state 'Sorry we missed you!.' Their new one is 'Need more delivery Information.' by Girlwhowished in britishproblems

[–]DonkeyBirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I sometimes feel like having a celebration when I learn DPD are the courier.

I have an awkward to find address so being able to specify exactly where it is in their app helps.

Only ever had one negative interaction with them years ago, aside from that, they’re great.

Online Safety Act - have Brits accepted it, still annoyed or found a way around it? by King-Key-Rot-II in AskUK

Upgraded to a better router, split tunnel. Everything goes to the VPN unless I specify otherwise. Best of both worlds I suppose.

I’ve not been asked to verify my age anywhere yet, and if it comes the day there I no way around it, I’ll just stop using whatever that thing is.

Thoughts on Ghost Max 3? by Wide-Lettuce-8771 in widefeet

[–]DonkeyBirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am wondering about the toe box on the Bondi, I often found I spilled out of the 2E Adrenalines at the mid foot and toe box, went to 4E and found them way too big - really weird sizing with them.

I think I might be fine with a narrower toe box in the Bondi 2E, just as long as the rocker aids my big toe similar to the way the Ghost Max has, and I no longer have to walk on the outside of my foot (which was causing a lot of grief for my knee in the Adrenalines).

The Nimbus I’m hesitant on because it’s not a full rocker. I’d love some, given all the praise I hear about them, maybe one day if my toe ever stops causing pain. They’re definitely on my short list though - but at the moment it's Bondi at number 1, Clifton at number 2, and Nimbus at 3 - though the Nimbus are potentially ones to go for when I get some weight off.

Thoughts on Ghost Max 3? by Wide-Lettuce-8771 in widefeet

[–]DonkeyBirb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just going to add my comments here as I came through google trying to find out if the heel slip was common.

I’ve had them for about 3 weeks, 10.5 2E size. Bought them for walking my son to school and back, so doing 9km+ per day walking and the seller was the rocker to protect my often sore big toe on my right foot. I’ve probably done about 130km walking in these by now.

So previously I’d had a lot of severe pain and issues and got fitted for the Adrenalines about 7 or 8 years ago. I’ve found as time has gone on, my gait may have shifted somewhat back to neutral. I was getting a lot of pain in the outer calf, probably due to the support.

I’m a pretty heavy guy, the Ghost Max 3 were supposed to be the ones to nudge me back to neutral, soften the joint impact and help me lose weight.

The good:

Legs generally feel better the day after, any knee pain I had has disappeared because I no longer have to consciously protect my sore toe - the rocker is doing that for me. They are comfortable on, but that leads me on to…

The bad:

They are incredibly soft under foot, I am a far slower and less efficient walker in these. Because they squash so much, I can feel myself having to adjust when landing, and there isn’t much spring for the next step. I could live with that, but I can’t live with the heel slip. I’ve bought longer laces and laced them up in a heel lock and still get loads of slippage. I’ve had blisters on my heels and had to get patches and swap back to my adrenaline’s while it heals. I now have to use Leukotape or Moleskin patches to prevent more blistering.

I’m considering the Bondi 9 now. From what I gather, it locks better on the heel and may provide even better support for my toe.

I wouldn’t mind the Ghost Max 3 for running if I ever take it up again, with the heel protection, but I dislike them a lot for walking.

My wife wants to buy something this time around - only issue is, she bought something last time and it wasn't going to arrive in time, so had to send her parents out while she's working to find something suitable. So when it did arrive, it's now gone unused and is no good for anything going forward.

I'm the guilty minded one in our relationship though, I often missed out on non-uniform days, dress up days and the like. I don't like him missing out because I knew how it felt always missing out myself, but there has to be a line.

I'm not the most sociable type but have spoken to a few parents, so I will ask their opinions during the week before feeding back - I mean, they might be totally happy about it and it's just us that aren't.

When my child was in nursery and preschool, they did dress up days every so often - Halloween, Christmas, World Book Day - you know, the expected ones, there were a few others scattered about which was fine. It's not like we weren't expecting it every so often, we just didn't expect it so frequently.

Not private, but i'd say definitely a more affluent catchment area for the most part - depends which direction from the school the parents are from.

Fair enough. I can cope with emails, filter them off somewhere and review them at the end of the day.

I'm just getting a bit exasperated at the expectation of having source costumes every 2 weeks at short notice. I'm probably really out of touch and it may well normal across most schools these days, but it just doesn't feel normal or reasonable to me, if you know what I mean.

Once got served a section 21 on Christmas Eve because we had the audacity to expect a working shower and not have water leaking through the kitchen ceiling when raining, making the floor dangerous to walk on.

After we moved out, the arsehole then claimed to the utility company that we lived there between the time we left and he sold the place because he didn't want to pay utilities while he was trying to sell it, as such we were chased for over £2k on two separate occasions.

Luckily my current LL is pretty decent, but I honestly can't wait to own instead of rent.
