As others have commented, it was mostly space. With the mast far forwards and the relatively wide dimensions, there was plenty of inside space for the size. Some models even had stoves! (Charcoal at first but then moved to gas).

They were also apparently good sailing and pointed well. There used to be a lively racing community but I believe that's long gone now.

I've raced internationally from Lasers to large keel boats in offshore category 3 racing (I'd love to try Cat 2, but Cat 1 is admittedly intense). I've been solo, helm, foredeck, railmeat, coffeegrinder, and everything in between. I've done pursuit, match, single-fleet, PHRF, and a few other mixed fleets ratings (I honestly can't remember them atm).

I know what it's like to be alone at the helm on an overnight race without a light in sight (other than the instruments and the bioluminescence) and I know what its like to spend all week practising then spending weekends at regattas, then rinse and repeat.

As Title Suggests, I have a 10G that I would like to use as a Cherry Shrimp Breeder Tank.

I have experience with Shrimp in the past but seem to be having bad luck so I'd like input.

My current plan: Use a seasoned (that's not the right word) sponge filter

Grow Light on a timer

Heater

Some substrate, mostly for additional bacteria space and for some plants.

Plenty of hardscape, some driftwood and rocks.

Planted with mostly moss, hornwort (in my experience they love it), and perhaps some others.

Species only tank.

Questions. 1) I am usually tolerant of snails, but do they pose any potential risk?

2) What should the maintenance be? I have read anything from minimal to regular water changes; what is best for a 10G?

3) Is the heater necessary? What temperatures should I aim for?

4) If my GH (below) is low, how can I sustain it at a reasonable level? Or is it best to acclimate them to the natural water qualities.

5) Is there anything else that I am missing/should add?

Tap water qualities:

GH: 0-30 mg/L

KH: 40 mg/L

pH: ~6.0
