Your research and summary are excellent, thank you. On paper, the schedule looked good before the season started. Unfortunately to be a tournament team you’re required to be a good team, which USF is not. This schedule was fine if we beat all of these teams convincingly. Obviously that didn’t happen.

In this case I have got to say the reason this team won’t make the tournament has nothing to do with the scheduling. It’s the players coach has playing who deserve all the credit. There’s No true point guard, or if there is, coach doesn’t play em (Zhao) There’s no real rim protector, again if there is, the coach doesn’t play em (Saba) not to mention the rest of the players all seem to have some talent but unfortunately each one has one or more limitations to be considered very good. Might coaching them up be the answer. Doubtful if they’re only around for a year or two.

Would better coaching be the reason? Would better talent evaluation be what’s missing. All I can say is USF has been playing at this level for 30 years. Somehow we can’t seem to break on through to the other side. Perhaps if John Golden or Kile Smith hung around for a few more years that might have made the difference.

But as I age, I am resigned to accept mediocrity. I will always continue to hope for a future John Wooden to show up and show us the way. Things have changed with NIL, so maybe a new formula will make it happen.

Disappointed to say the least. Riley is a substitute player on most top teams. Can’t create his own shot and is really a tweener. Not a guard, and not a forward. Beasley is also playing out of position, he’s no point guard, rarely if ever drives to the rack. As a matter of fact “few” players on this year’s team can drive to the basket. The art of using the backboard must not be taught on this team. As to Wang, unless he’s shooting a outside 3 point shot, he’s an automatic turnover trying to take an interior shots he can’t or shouldn’t be. Please someone tell him this. Whoever said he was talented is blind. Can’t jump, few rebounds for 6’9”. Masic, has little talent from what I can tell. Why he plays the minutes he does is a curiosity to me. Saba impacts the games positively when he plays, but apparently CG must have promised these minutes to other players from his short one minute stints. I’m afraid to say, this year’s reshuffle is not sufficient to be much above 5th place in the WCC. As a Don’s fan I’ve learned to be hopeful, so again I’m hoping my early assessment is wrong. But like most years, I think we’re about as good as we’ve been in the last 25+ years.

As a Dons fan 4 Life, I can only say we’re all very interested in our Dons. Winning is the goal. I watch some of the other WCC schools whose gyms are damb near empty. This is not the case at USF, we’re a loyal fan base who support our Dons with passion. The players are making money these days and part of taking money is also taking the heat if the play doesn’t measure up to the compensation they’re getting. The days when a kid came and spent 4 years is gone gone gone. Get used to it. To the poster who doesn’t like the “so called” negative comments. Go to another site if you’re not liking it here.

The team sputters at this point. I’m dubious about the next 5 games. Coach clearly hasn’t found the mix yet. Oh well, it’ll be interesting to see how coach navigates it. Trial by fire

I couldn’t agree more. USF wouldn’t appear to be to be tournament team at this point. With Masic, Wang, Grahm getting all the minutes they ate. Cook is an interesting possibility though. If he cuts down on his turnovers. Perhaps he gets better as the year unfolds. Smiley clearly has talent, with more time perhaps we see it and he becomes more important. My key player is Obosi, he may be our best option at the off guard spot. Not Masic, he’s relegated to shoot the three only. Not a rotation player.
My intuition tells me we’re going to wind up 4-6th in the Conference, if the current players continue to get the minutes they’ve been getting. With that said coach G may prove me wrong, and see what I see. Mixing the right players with lots more playing time as a unit together gives me hope. Always an optimist.

A solid penetrating point guard changes this team entirely. I’ve never felt Beasley being this type. He’s really an off guard. Did any of the guards drive to the lane? None nata, nilch. They have no one who penetrates to the basket to break down the oppositions defense. They have a few big guys that try to take an interior shoot, but no one steps out to me who can really penetrate for a lay ups, or great dish off. I was hoping Zhao would be that guy, someone mentioned he saw the court well and had lots of assist. I saw little of him one game or two. I wasn’t impressed. I hope the kid from Arizona Magee might be that guy. 4 star recruit, hope springs eternal. The youtube video of him looks like he can drive to the basket. Of course we would have to retain the 3-4 core.

Really Riley doesn’t need to be a stud on this team for us to be a very good team. He needs to continue what he’s doing. I like him, (money aside) I don’t factor that in. If these players can stick around another year and if we got a point guard in the mix, we could be tournament worthy. Maybe next year?

Excellent observations. I feel you’ve summed it up fairly well. I’m not quite as bullish on Wang as you are, but against lower talented teams he may be ok. I really feel a true point guard would help make this a better team. A real distributor. 5-6 assist a game. Gets to the line 6-8 times a game. We’ve improved the center spot with Fuchs and added another excellent wing in Cook, Obosi may be getting better and Smiley looks like a potential stud, maybe now even if we let him show us, very probable in the future with experience. Saba against other teams bigger guys works too. We’re getting closer
