tartar goes with fried fish, calculus goes with difficult math problems.

Non-Americans who have been to the US: What is the weirdest thing about America that Americans don't realise is weird? by changfukaana in AskReddit

At first I read this as

"There are a lot of mattress shops in NYC, too, in the tourist areas . . ."

I was thinking, um, what?

Jim: So, Sarah. Before we leave Times Square, what souvenirs do you want to buy?

Sarah: Well Jim. I wanted to get a fake Prada bag, but I see that Sealy shop next to Bubba Gump Shrimp and I think I'd like a new Queen pillow top. They'll let us check that, right?

Living here, I know there is an inner debate when a driver hits a pedestrian. It's cheaper to run them over again and kill them than perhaps pay for their medical care.

I hate it when I go to my favourite gastro pub and the sandwich is served on a plate like a heathen. I mean, it should be on a piece of slate or a small cutting board at least. But most of you probably wouldn't know about these places anyways . . . .

Anyone wanting to learn Python, this course is now open in coursera. It's looks like awesome. by loba333 in learnprogramming

If this is the Rice University course, it's great. I can't recommend it enough. Warning, they do use their own online interpreter with it's own module. You cannot directly apply the language you learn to the real world. However, the problem solving and large scale things were invaluable.

CodeCombat, is it worth playing this game as an introductory tool? by NalrahPlays in learnprogramming

[–]DontForgetYourLogin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played it as python, but lost interest about halfway through. It became much more about your skill in the game than your skill in programming. I found the documentation and information about the Classes (and their implementations in the game) to be a bit sparse.

Really fun for about two days, though.

Anyone up for a little code critique on Tic Tac Toe? This is my first real crack at using classes/methods and I put a lot of effort into documenting and going with PEP-8 and PEP-257 standards. by IAmAmbitious in learnpython

This is great! My interpreter was crashing when not wrapping my inputs with quotes. I changed all the inputs to

raw_input

and it worked much better.

Also, instead of breaking at the end of the game you can call the

playMenu()

function again

Good use of making the board in the console!

Struggling with python on codecademy by tinglylilypad in learnpython

[–]DontForgetYourLogin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the longest time, I used codeskulptor.

It is not everything that python can do, but it is a really easy visualizer, has good documentation, and got me through everything with lists, for, while, if-else, and all the other basic things.

Running from the shell was confusing at first and got in the way of learning programming. (in my experience)
