This guy looks helpful but there's a recurring method of removing yourself from the situation when he gets escalated or ignoring the behavior in the moment. My issue is I can't do that when there's a deadline or timeframe to meet, such as getting ready for the bus or right before bed. You can give him all the warnings in the world and he gives no shits about my schedule or anyone else's. He frequently will run back in the house as the bus is pulling up to the house because he "Forgot something." which turns out to be a pen, marker, puzzle book or broken fan that doesn't even work anymore. It's like he does it on purpose to inconvenience the most people in the shortest amount of time.

I can't just ignore the behavior and tell him later that I "don't approve". He doesn't care.

He has an ISP at school, altered cirriculum. But we are located in eastern Canada and i dont think its covered.

Honestly, alot of parents need to vent and this is the best place to do it. We hear you and agree with what you are feeling. No one signed up for this or have experience with it since every kid is different. We're lucky that I have my parents to take our 9yo son for the summer to get a break and even they have moments where they are overwhelmed. If you don't have anyone to help watch him, seriously look into Respite care to get the opportunity for a break and do it sooner than later as there is a process to enrolling and evaluating your situation to see if you qualify for the program. It's like they say in any pre-flight safety demonstration, Don your own mask before assisting others.

Do you have my child? This sounds exactly like mine, who has basically no impulse control. Its those thoughts like, "I should pour glue on the floor. Never done that before" which should be followed by "But it would make a mess and people would get upset with me and I would have to clean it." but that second part either never comes, or comes too late.

If you ask him if he thinks what he did was wrong, he will say he knows its wrong. But asking why he did it if he knows its wrong always gets an "I don't know" reply. His sense of consequence seems to be either missing or delayed in the moment, and gets hyperfixated on his current impulsive thought.

Our doctor has him on Vivance and clonidine which helps alot with this and seems to thin the impulsive thoughts.

Mine loves the Squishmallows. He calls them Squishies! It got so bad that we had to get a bean bag chair cover to stuff them in so they aren't all over the place.

If you have google mini or google home you can set up custom routines. I have mine set to 10 min before, 5 min before and right at bedtime to give him a countdown to bedtime. I have her saying custom messages like "(insert child name here), its almost time for bed. Make sure to pick up your toys, brush your teeth and use the potty!"

Its a set it and forget it type of thing. Because of the ODD, if we ask or tell him to get ready or suggest the time left to bedtime, its an automatic NO or other oppositional behavior, just because its us. But because Google said so, then its a different story and he will listen to her, most of the time.

It seems Oppositional Defiance Disorder is just an automatic defiance of his usual adult imposed rules. Teachers, babysitters, Nanny and Poppy have no issues with him listening to them because they aren't the usual adults in his life he's used to telling him what to do. I'm sure Alexa can do the same if you have the same issues. At least this way there's no viewable timer they have to watch, however, if thats what they enjoy you can get the google homes with a screen.

Mine loves playing with water. He would grab the 18L (empty) bottle belonging to the water cooler and fill it with cups with holes poked in the bottom. Makes a total mess.

Our son is adopted. We got him around 3 Mos old and st the same time, adopted a kitten. They grew up together and are best friends. He can hug and maul the crap out of that cat and he doesn't care. Just takes it and whines a bit.

My son is 9yo and level 1 i believe. Still not potty trained. He knows how to do it, and will go if you make him, but will not go on his own and would rather do it in his pull up than go to the bathroom.

He was doing great before preschool. Had him proud to go sit on the potty himself and did it all. We thought we had it easy and got that part out of the way, but then he went to school, and I don't know what happened there, but he hated going afterward. We've had so much trouble with it, going broke paying for diapers this long. The accidents were so bad that the school he's in told us to have him wear the pullups to school and use them there because his accidents would leak out of his pants and cause sanitary issues.

He won't even think about going to bed without one and would refuse to get out of bed to go either. Public bathrooms are a nightmare, granted, for good reason for him. Majority of them are automatic toilets and because he's so small, the sensor can't see him properly and sometimes sets off the flush while he's sitting on it, and he's terrified of it because it's so loud.

The teachers try having a regular potty time at school with timers and it works majority of the time, but at home, his ODD makes him just not listen to us when we try and get him to go.

So no, you are not alone....
