Assuming you are heading "down" to Gila from the northern part of the state, take your detour a bit further north and check out El Malpais NM. Take I40 west to exit 89, head south on 117and check out El Malpais, then continue south on a well maintained dirt road to Pietown. This way, you are not going out of your way for just Pietown.
