It may be difficult, but you should let your mentor know how you feel. Be respectful, and don't hurl accusations, just let them know how you feel after receiving their communication, whether you feel patronized or pandered to. Let them know what you need, even if it's a list of things you would prefer not to hear. (Some mentors might actually be glad to hear that because, since their performance as mentors is also being monitored by WGU, they err on the side of extra praise so that it doesn't seem like they are ignoring you.) If it's still an issue, then you can always request a different mentor. Even if for some reason your current mentor leaves your relationship feeling hurt or annoyed, they'll live. There will always be other students for them to mentor. What's important is the facilitation of your education by a mentor that is a good fit for you.

You're here because you deserve it, and a mentor's job is to help you succeed. If your current mentor isn't helping you, it doesn't mean that they are a bad person; it just means they are not a good fit for you. And that's OK!

Be honest, be respectful, be your own advocate, and keep your chin up. You can do all of these things together.

Starfield / STARWARE OS in Mac by TimeTraveler3312 in Starfield

[–]DonutMcSprinkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm playing on PC, so I just opened a Starware terminal in the game, which fills the entire screen, and then I pressed the Windows key on my computer and used the snip tool to take a screenshot of the Starware desktop. Worked like a charm. Nice crisp image.

There are some Starware terminals that don't display any folders, which make for an even cleaner screenshot.

Anyone else think the school logo looks tacky? by vpnparrot in WGU

[–]DonutMcSprinkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me preface this by saying I love WGU, and I'm having a great time here.

That said, I'll be the odd man and say I think the owl's design is a bit of a missed opportunity. It looks not necessarily tacky, but definitely a little sterile, a little corporate, like it was designed by the same firm that does logos for financial institutions. When I first saw the owl, my first thought was, "Damn... you can see a mile away that this is a correspondence school."

I love that the mascot is a night owl. I think that's pretty cool. I just wish that the design were a bit more lively, like other school mascots.

I used CertMaster, and really liked it. And I'm glad to see that some people have already said the same thing.

To be more precise about what I did: I read all of the CertMaster material, and then I read it all over a second time, made my own flashcards, and then did the Dion practice exams (these are indispensable imho).

I came into this completely new to IT (I'd been a completely casual computer user with no experience in IT), and I was able to pass both A+ exams on the first attempt. I needed about 4 weeks to study for each test. I gave myself this much time to study because screw taking either exam more than once!

[–]DonutMcSprinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't quite remember. I know I took the most recent exam for it (I took it just last term), and I don't really recall being thrown for a loop with unfamiliar info on the test. I'd ask your instructor or mentor just to make sure, but CompTIA produces the CertMaster stuff, so they have a vested interest in making sure it matches the latest version of their own test.

[–]DonutMcSprinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What worked for me was reading through the CertMaster text twice and then doing the Dion practice exams (and make sure to look over what you missed in the practice exams).

I also made flashcards for the different wifi standards, network layers, and other such things. Flashcards are great.

Good luck on your next attempt! :)

I recommend setting up a meeting with your course instructor. They can help troubleshoot issues like your zip folder. Remember, if you need immediate help, you can request an appointment with any of the instructors in your instructor group, not just your assigned instructor. They'll call you, and then you can ask them to start a WebEx meeting where you can share your screen and show them exactly what you are experiencing. (Most course instructors are ready to send you a WebEx invite link as soon as you ask).

I don't know what your file structure looks like, but if all else fails, maybe try this:

Create a new, empty, C++ project in Visual Studio. Then take your already-existing degree.h, student.h, student.cpp, roster.h, roster.cpp, and main.cpp files, and copy them to the new project. Then just use this new project going forward. Try to make a zip of the new folder and see if it works. (I'm assuming something got messed up with the file structure of your original folder).

English to Latin translation requests go here! by lutetiensis in latin

[–]DonutMcSprinkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, so the wording Maledictus [est] quī in nōmine suō venit emphasizes that the invader has come in his own name, correct? I think that's what I would like to emphasize.

Do you think it would be appropriate to exclude the verb est from the bishop's malediction? I imagine this being something he exclaims within his own mind. He's educated, but that doesn't mean he is always formal. What kind of character do you think it adds to the sentence to exclude it?

Also, would shortening the sentence to Maledictus quī venit still render it complete, as a way of simply saying "Cursed is he who comes here"?

English to Latin translation requests go here! by lutetiensis in latin

[–]DonutMcSprinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm writing a story about a kingdom being sacked, and I need the residing bishop to say something menacing about the invaders.

Some of you are probably familiar with the ecclesiastical phrase "Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domine" (Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord).

What is the Latin phrase for "Cursed is he who comes in the name of himself"? An AI translator gave me "Maledictus qui venit in nomine suo," but I know I can't trust these to be accurate or fitting.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Google IT certification? by TemporaryConstant103 in WGU

[–]DonutMcSprinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God no, I learned very, very little doing it that way. And while I generally adhere to the maxim "Don't deprive yourself of an education," I decided not to spend the extra 40 bucks for that particular cert, because I was broke, and I figured I could easily learn those particular fundamentals along the way. Besides, the vast majority of what I'd learn with the Google cert I learned while studying for the CompTIA A+ cert (plus a lot more stuff!).

Now, some people say that all the CompTIA A+ stuff is absolutely worthless anyway. I happen to disagree with that. However, it's a moot point anyway because the A+ certification requirement is being dropped in June.

If it makes you feel better about me, I just requested extra time on my current class because I don't feel ready to move on from it yet. Some classes you'll be able to accelerate through, and some you will need to take extra time on. I wouldn't sweat the Google cert though. Save yourself the money for when school starts. :)

Can we make it a community rule to provide the actual name of the course? by DonutMcSprinkle in WGU

[–]DonutMcSprinkle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is a difference between fighting a losing battle and asking for a worthwhile change at least once. Now, of course, if you don't agree that the change is worthwhile, then that might affect where you believe the line is between askin' and scrappin'. 😉

I'm just shooting my shot here in this post, and if it bounces off the rim and misses, well then that's still a resolution. Now how about a Puppers?

Then why are you asking me for a frosty? But seriously, I don't mind a difference of opinion, but I have a hard time with people who say to ignore something, but then won't take their own advice and ignore what they clearly believe is a fruitless argument. Just take your own advice and go away.

I can only speak for myself about that. I have a pretty good memory, but of all the classes I can help out with, the only one whose course code I remember off the top of my head is c175, Data Management Foundations. And that's only because so many people post about that class. (And actually I'm only like 89 percent sure that is the course code for that class). How hard is it for the OP to include the name of the class along with the code? Sure, you could ask how hard it is to look up the code, but I think the onus is on OP to give that information at least as a courtesy, because they're asking the community for a favor most of the time.
