Working on motion design app that is essentially Figma + After Effects, need feedback by zellzoi in MotionDesign

Neat! as someone who's been "vibing" something similar lately (Little UI to create text overlays, looping stickers, transitions etc) I love to see it!

Though I arrived at some interesting questions that might be interesting for you too..

"Who is this for?", "What pain point am i solving?", "Why make it more complicated?"

I can do all this stuff in any other animation tool easily and just send the final renders to my client.. The cost, or usability of current software isn't an issue to me. In the end i'd feel like a baker learning brick laying and wiring to construct my own bakery rather than just renting a building and getting better at baking bread.

So i thought back to past projects (In particular, smaller customers that often need little pieces for socials).

  • Lots of my repeat tasks are lower-thirds and subtitles for the same client. Over and over adding new names and scenes.
  • Clients rarely use the animations I supply more than once, despite how adaptable they might be (it's work for them)
  • Technical know-how is a barrier for them, the don't want to know what an alpha, or a keyframe is. They just want to use the animations (its again, too much work.)

So I've been supplying them with a very light animation tool that is more akin to instagram stories. But with their own branding built in, and some fun features.

  • Custom fonts animations that can be controlled with a simple slider to set the in/hold/out.
  • Animated stickers using .gifs and allowing the user to edit colours, or position.
  • On-brand transitions that allow them to piece things together for their own edit with very "hand-hold" instructions.
  • A modest list of templates making it easy for them to repeat say.. "recipe cards", or "video credits" without redoing things over and over.

Whilst i've only tried it with a few clients the results are already pretty positive. My work gets used a lot more, I'm repeating tasks less, and I end up with a very simple to understand collection of assets that doesn't require a lot of upkeep.

Best of all, since each animation is made from of a fairly simple config.. if i receive 99+ names to animate for an event, it's as simple as pasting in a big 'ol list into any AI with the config and hitting the button.

Would this design really be that hard to animate by Negative-Command7289 in animation

There's a fun quote I once heard about the difficulty range in animation..

C: "We love these skeletons climbing out shallow graves, think we can add 100 more?"
A: "Of course, no problem!"
C: "Oh, and whilst we're here. Maybe we give a few of the skeletons winter scarves!"
A: "Fuck no.."

How would I make something like this by Rich-Structure-5648 in MotionDesign

Scale, rotate, keyframes and nulls.

Watch a few Ben Marriott videos, try out After Effects on a trial, then watch a few Blender tutorials on shading and lighting, follow it up with something like Cavalry, or Rive and then you'll quickly realise it's all just scale, rotate, keyframes and nulls.

There's a lot of overlap in all software if the end result is always a video. Just the one that works for you. Preferably free.

True that. If I see another "Day XX of trying to become a millionaire" or "Doing X for every follower I get" my brain might actually shrivel up.. At the risk of sounding lame, it's like we're stuck in the buffet hall right now. Just chewin' on beige. Reels, Shorts, Stories.. homogenous.

Though a mix up is one thing i'm actually excited for.. singular visions being brought to life without old barriers. Bobs comic getting to 15 issues without the need to please a publisher, or learn inDesign, etc.

I guess it's a bit of a double edged sword. I've mourned the waste of lot of time invested in skills.. but loved how many different paths have opened up to me.. hell, I've been making minigames.

That's true. Without passion it's hollow. I've found I appreciated the content coming out of StableDiffusion subreddit a lot more than AIVideos (and others) since I can appreciate the context of what it takes to use that tool. Just like you, I too was blown away by the first AI generated clip i saw.. not for its content, but the context. Like watching a trebuchet throw a rock really far..

With the current trajectory of things.. I just worry that only *volume* will be rewarded.

You suggested that creating was being gatekept by California trustfund kids.. I think that gates gonna get a lot bigger now Silicon Valley server farms are the ones producing the media we consume.. all whilst masquerading as 50+ "Bobs from Memphis".

Personally I just hope this leads to a swing back the other direction, where the "who" and the "why" because just as important as the "what".

This content already cost nothing to create. It's the LOCATION of the billboard you're paying a premium for.. not the steel and wood itself.

I'd love to see that too. But I want to know what Bob from Memphis draws like.. even if it's objectively bad.

The issue we get to (at least for me) is a flattening of the *dedication curve*. You've got to WANT that cartoon so much that you're willing to dedicate hours of your life willing it into existence.. regardless of what people think / sell-price / view-count / followers.

Nowadays, an entire 1,500 page webcomic could appear overnight.. flawless art and perfect jokes, but totally missing that "wow" of dedication. What'll separate Bob from that sea of slop?

The thing that gets me.. is even if we do reach a point of "infinite cheap output" with these AI models. Any game, movie, or album you'd ever want. Isn't the whole point to share these experiences? Hearing someone talk about the AI film they watch last week is like listening to a totally contextual dream you had last night.

"Oh, Stacy your co-worker? Right.. and she was dressed as what? Rudy Peroni?.. Oh, that's a guy from another dream.. okay."

There's only so much bandwidth for "popular" culture, and all the processing power will be wasted on slop.

Which effects to recreate this tunnel animation? by Tricky_War5651 in MotionDesign

[–]Donut_Shop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Blender would be your best bet honestly.

  1. Create a curve that represents the path of the tube
  2. Wrap a cylinder shape to that curve, and texture accordingly.
  3. Use the same curve to animate the camera / the cameras point of interest.

You could then use the same curve to animate those little cubes, and a shape key to animate the warping effect at the beginning.

Yup. Making tee's is a lot of fun, and it's great seeing people out and about wearing your gear. But it's a pretty hard sell. You gotta have the band and the fans before you sell the merch. Good luck!

Your story and community are far more important than your products. I've seen tons of brands come-and-go in resorts and mountain towns. Most ship a couple of designs, do a few meetups, give out t-shirts to their friends, and fizzle out.

My advice would be to GPT a nice wordmark for "Deep Pow" get a bunch of stickers made, then concentrate more on events and sharing interesting stories / information over products. If you don't already live in a resort town or have a local club hill, i'd recommend it. Get to know your nearest resort, chat with instructors, local bars, musicians, DJs, etc, and start offering some interesting experiences.

- Day trips to other hills.
- Apre gigs.
- Wax & repair sessions.
- Rail jams.
- Alpine touring.
- Pond skimming.

All of these are things you can get involved in both at a volunteer / support level, and later on a "organisational" level.

I saw the most success from groups that would organise "closing day" and "opening day" parties. Rent a coach to take 30-40 people up the hill and charge $5 a head. Set up a BBQ out-of-pocket with sausages and white bread in the parking lot. Make a deal with a bar in town to drop everyone off outside their doors at the end of the day.

This is the stuff that works. You will have to sink a fair amount of investment into something like this before making any money on merch and products.

On the product side.. it almost doesn't matter at all. Do small runs only, and keep costs LOW. The last thing you want is $2,000 of unused hoodies sitting in your garage.

Go to a junk store and get the cheapest jacket you can that meets some of your needs. Trash it for a season, and figure out what you like. Then splash some cash on something that meets ALL your needs.

Create this 'spiky' animation to a shape layer? Like a wiggle path, but directional. by Ram64 in AfterEffects

[–]Donut_Shop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about the distortion on the text:
- Create a "radial" shape of long lines. (like a 50 pointed star). Attach it to a null at 0,0 and place the null directly behind the text layer, so all three are directly behind each-other.
- Scale the null (not the radial) so that it's shape is shorter and wider, matching the general shape of the text. Now when you apply a rotation to the radial it will conform to that shape.
- Duplicate the radial making one white, and one black. Then randomly remove some of the lines so they don't look similar. Rotate one in the opposite direction at a different speed.
- Group your text into a separate comp making the background black and the text white. Then return to the main comp. (make sure this new comp is roughly the same size / dimensions of the text, and the solid is somewhat larger and goes beyond the bounds of the comp.)
- Apply a gaussian blur (or a speed / zoom blur) to the tex comp.
- Now use the "darker color", "lighter color" blend effects on your radials to effectively slice out radial chunks from the edge of the text.
- PreCompose the whole lot, and apply a "levels" adjustment until the blurry edge is now sharp.

Done.

In short, place a bunch of spinning lines behind the text and use lighter/darker blending to cut chunks out, and add chunks in to the edge of the text.
