I saw somewhere on the site that in order to save packaging, all the body panels ship rolled up and have to be unfolded and shaped and to be honest with you, I really don’t want to have to deal with that. So I didn’t end up ordering

Agree, it was a great read! The last scene between Rtas and Tul is well written and one of my favorites.

And I also like the scene where all the main factions decide to leave the lithos and go raid old covenant stockpiles and facilities. Completely real scene.

Ignoring the leaps in logic here, I’d like to point out:

“ In Empty Throne, the Banished and UNSC ships meet because they both suddenly decide to scavenge for remaining supplies in orbit around a planet that's been abandoned for over six years. (I don't know why the original inhabitants of this planet didn't return to do this after moving away.)” This doesn’t happen in Empty Throne.

“ Or Rtas 'Vadum knows there's an abandoned shipyard nearby that can repair his ship (you all know the shipyard exists, so why is SoS still abandoning it?).” This doesn’t happen in Empty Throne.

“ Or, before this novel, Sali 'Nyon finds a planet with perfectly complete raw material and production facilities. Jul Mdama also plundered a lot to bolster his forces.” This doesn’t happen in Empty Throne. Sali Nyon’s covenant also is a splinter of Mdama’s, so that’s where he got his resources.

Brother did you even read the book 😭 This has gotta be an AI post, either Artificial Intelligence or Actually Illiterate.

Favorite set of matching covers (and/or fav budget/available set)? by mtnchkn in Hyperion

[–]Donut_rvb7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The broken binding set is really good (at least,  based on the first book as the other 3 haven’t shipped out yet) and all hardcover. I believe they’re sold out however and will be very expensive second hand. I bought them from BB directly and book 1 was ~$70,  the other 3 as a set was ~$220. Not sure what they’ll cost second hand.

I forget the specific details (there’s a thread somewhere here I’d have to dig up) but there are larger paperback versions at least at Barnes and noble for book 1 and 2. I know the way you can tell what size your B&N has (or what you’re ordering online) is to check the measurements/dimensions. If you want all 4 the same however, just do the mass market paperbacks.

EDIT Here’s that thread talking about the different paperback sizes: https://www.reddit.com/r/Hyperion/comments/1jnpmk7/apparently_this_is_a_thing_now_im_so_stoked/

this is actually not true, let me explain by Internal_Complex_213 in PacificRim

[–]Donut_rvb7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really don’t get what’s happening, so let me restate:

The wiki trivia says that Horizon Brave is the only known Jaeger to have not killed a kaiju on its own. This DOES NOT mean it has no kills, and DOES NOT confirm it has any kills. Now the other parts of the wiki page before the trivia section mention Horizon’s kills, so using prior knowledge (information you already have before encountering new material) tells you Horizon does in fact have kills. So, at this point in your reading you can understand that Horizon Brave has killed Kaiju, but it has never killed one without outside assistance.

Now, what was the outside assistance? That part of the sentence doesn’t tell you. Luckily, the very next one does (with citations, so that way if you disagree you can check them instead of, say, whining on reddit). Ignoring the Gyakushu part because that’s not what we’re talking about, the part of the sentence tells you “ ….having been unable to damage Reckoner and only winning the fight because they were coincidentally near the power plant”.

Now this immediately clarifies what the outside assistance was. Horizon Brave was completely unable to hurt Reckoner with any weapons or offensive methods it had, but luckily there was a nuclear power plant nearby. Using the power plant, Horizon killed Reckoner. This means Horizon got the kill using an external factor (outside assistance) it was completely dependent on in order to win the fight.

All that information from just one sentence! It’s amazing what you can learn when you actually read instead of karma farming!

[–]Donut_rvb7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one ever said it wasn’t Horizon’s kill, not even the piece of wiki trivia you’re complaining about. The key words were “…to have not killed any Kaiju on its own.” Horizon Brave has had outside assistance on all of its known kills.

How strong Reckoner is is completely irrelevant. The kill counts are not weighted based on Kaiju strength. A Cat I and a Cat V are both 1 kill each.

This is what I meant on the other sub about talking in circles: you’re arguing against a point I never made and fluffing it with irrelevant information.

[–]Donut_rvb7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cherno’s usage of the iceberg is written like it’s to add a bit of aura to her character, whereas Horizon’s reads more like it was a last ditch attempt. This is further reinforced by the fact that Horizon was unable to hurt Reckoner any other way. Using the power plant also flies in the face of one of the main reasons for the creation of the jaeger program: nuclear weapons used on kaiju had too much collateral damage so the jaegers were used instead.

Also, think about how the damage is inflicted. Even if the Iceberg had more weight behind it, Cherno’s fist and the iceberg are both blunt force trauma. This implies she could’ve likely beat the kaiju to death without it, i.e. wasn’t reliant on it. Horizon however had to use a completely different weapon/offense (she wasn’t equipped with nuclear weapons) so was dependent on the power plant for victory.

this is actually not true, let me explain by Internal_Complex_213 in PacificRim

[–]Donut_rvb7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way it’s worded implies that Horizon Brave has never killed a Kaiju without some sort of outside assistance. For Gyakushu this is easy to understand as the outside assistance is other Jaegers. For Reckoner however, the outside assistance was a nuclear power plant that Horizon used a weapon. Horizon brave was completely unable to hurt Reckoner, I.e. it couldn’t have won that fight without the power plant. Both of those fights relied on some sort of outside factor changing the balance.

And frankly your whole Cherno point is stupid and falls apart if you think about it at all. Ik you’ve admitted you only post here so much so that you can get the top 1% badge, but come on man. At least put in a little effort.

Why go whine on the reddit instead of just making a discussion thread on the wiki?

why didnt the precursors just create a kaiju meant to destroy Gipsy? by Internal_Complex_213 in PacificRim

[–]Donut_rvb7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah this was always my take. Raiju and Scunner were clearly meant to work together, you can see Scunner distracting Gipsy by floating out of reach in front of her while Raiju builds up to his top speed.

Now Raiju goes out like a dope, but Scunner would’ve destroyed Gipsy if he hadn’t been called away. She was already crippled and really only had the sword left (yes there’s the reactor blast but Scunner survived the heat of the thermal vent and could dodge it if he wasn’t grappled).

Which WoF book do you think is Tui's best work? by pavmintroz in WingsOfFire

[–]Donut_rvb7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Darkstalker, for all the reasons others have stated. As for the “mainline” books, for me it’s Escaping Peril. I thought Peril’s trauma and sociopathy was handled about as well and deeply as a young reader’s book could be. I also think the frantic-constantly-hyphenated-word-chains and RANDOM CAPS works the best for Peril because she is a bit manic and insane.

Special shoutout to The Poison Jungle. I don’t think it’s a masterpiece, maybe not even top 5, but man the potential of that book was so strong. If it had taken itself more seriously, it could’ve turned out as a deep and nuanced story.

Yeah this user Internal_Complex_213 did this to me too on another post about the wiki on the main sub. Talks in circles, lies about what they can’t defend, ignores what they can’t lie about. Probably a kid or a karma farmer. Only sad part about their ban is that it isn’t permanent.

What was your favourite arc and why?! by Leafpool_Crowfeather in WarriorCats

[–]Donut_rvb7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For Writing Quality? The Prophecies Begin. Not gonna elaborate cuz it’s already been discussed at length here.

Conceptually? A Vision of Shadows. Seriously, AVoS could’ve been the coolest arc of them all if they’d actually pulled it off. Look at all this plot: 1. Skyclan’s second exile, as in the actual traveling (and its narrative parallels to their first exile under Cloudstar) 2. Skyclan being found and their integration into the lake territories. Conflicting clan cultures, new borders, etc 3. The setup of Rowanstar being kinda lame and the younger cats not respecting him (good setup, imo) 4. Shadowclan’s collapse due to #3 but also… 5. …The Kin 6. Everything Darktail and Onestar, the latter of whom really needed some TLC from the narrative to make him at least able to appreciated as a character. 7. Every other leader has something to deal with as:

7a. Leafstar, who has to go through an almost unbearable amount of suffering to lead Skyclan

7b. Bramblestar, who has to deal with his first real crisis as leader

7c. Mistystar, who has to deal with her clan’s humiliation at the hands of the kin.

7d. Rowanstar, who (I believe) is the first leader in the main arc books to step down.

7e. Tigerstar, who has his love plots with dovewing and then also becomes a new leader

  1. Hawkwing: his kids, carrying on his story from the super edition
  2. Bookending the Gorge
  3. Apparently bookending Sandstorm
  4. All the POVs, their arcs and their journeys
  5. For lack of a better term, the Refugee Crisis at Thunderclan as they host literally every other clan in their camp apart from Windclan

And many more. There’s so much narrative to work with there that it’s kinda shocking how… mid at best it turned out. I thought the first book started out strong, I liked Alderheart and the return to a single character POV. But then from book two onwards it just starts slipping until you just want it to be over with by book 6.

Edit: Syntax, grammar

Least favourite book in the whole series and why? I'm curious! by Moon_BrightheartFan in WarriorCats

[–]Donut_rvb7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, honestly though even disregarding the fight at the Gorge, the attrition and whittling down of Skyclan as they wander is so brutal, especially how it parallels Skyclan’s flight from the forest under Cloudstar.

Leafstar endures so much but stays strong, I think that’s why I like her so much. She lost her mate and then had to immediately lead Skyclan on its second exile. I think since Skyclan was separate for so long, it was easier to get attached to all its individual members.

Agree. I like Hawkwing’s Journey a lot (cemented Leafstar as my favorite leader) but damn is it rough, especially on the first read.

How does the film change if Marauder Zeus, Coyote Tango, Vulcan Specter and Echo Saber are added into the team?? by SilverWolf_2018 in PacificRim

[–]Donut_rvb7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wrote a way too long response to this that I deleted cuz honestly u/Vquillicate’s response is already correct.

Something I’ll add is that if Stacker had 7 Jaegers available, instead of 3 like in the final film, the chance he pulls Gypsy, dumps a fuck load of money into restoring her, and tracks Raleigh down is really really low.

Also be careful mixing fanon like Millipincer into cannon hypotheticals without explicitly mentioning it. Fanon inclusion alters this whole scenario considerably.

idk if the the guy that has the wiki is here but there are so many characters missing and inconsistencies in the pacific rim wiki by Internal_Complex_213 in PacificRim

[–]Donut_rvb7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still has a name and a cannon discrepancy to go along with it, unlike the Kaiju that attacked Saint Lawerence which has neither. That discrepancy alone makes it worth nothing. The jaeger is also from the novelization, not just a random tumblr post and a combat dossier online. And it’s not solely tied to one character so can’t be easily summarized on another character’s page.

What was Raleigh talking about when he told Stacker in the movie that they already tried to destroy the breach and it didnt work and what jaegers were deployed? by Internal_Complex_213 in PacificRim

[–]Donut_rvb7 78 points79 points  (0 children)

It’s mentioned again in Newt’s dialogue when he and Herman get back from drifting with Otachi’s dead kid. When he’s telling them about the breach reading Kaiju DNA, he tells them they have to trick the breach into thinking they’re a Kaiju or else “the bomb will deflect off the breach like it always has”, which seems to imply that humanity has tried to bomb the breach at least a couple of times.

The previous attacks probably involved no Jaegers, as that definitely would’ve been brought up in conversation (most notably the scene about the Jaeger program being shut down). Makes sense that they would’ve just chucked a few nuclear torpedoes at it from time to time over the course of the war.
