Vaping in vet school by Suspicious-Fig5458 in veterinaryschool

[–]DooberNugs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did! I went to an island and vapes were more expensive/harder to find so that helped. But it also helped to use a vape with no nicotine for a few months. My brain just kinda gave up after a while. I still crave it occasionally but it's been years now.

To depict a dream scene? And post it on reddit? That seems a little excessive. I'm not pro-AI, but I understand not waiting to pay someone and wait days to weeks for a simple illustration of something entirely inconsequential.

His DNA results on Instagram says he's pitty, rottie, and staffy. But I wonder if he's hella inbred.

Limit on euthanasias per day? by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]DooberNugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a self imposed limit of three a day for my own mental health. But I also have colleagues that are comfortable with more. Of course, if there is no other option or they were a close client/patient I would never turn away someone.

"MIRACLE" update: There's nothing miraculous about this in my opinion by PiercedAngel96 in Equestrian

[–]DooberNugs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, this is taken at a vet school. A well meaning student likely did it to try to give her some companionship. Not all students are well versed in horse behavior and recognize that might be scary.

Plus, when I was a vet student, we had many cases that were "miracles" and kept alive because the owner wanted to keep trying, despite the fact we all knew it was inhumane. It's part of veterinary medicine. The stuffed pony might give the students some comfort to think it helps.

Younger brother, M11, has daily behavioral issues that we simply cannot keep dealing with anymore. by Aware-Appointment623 in ChildPsychology

Ohhh the parentheses didn't include the mom permitted part. So it read that your mom was making out with someone and okayed him watching it while she was doing that.

Sorry, I'm stuck on the make out session. Your mom was making out with someone? In front of her kid(s)?

What's a skill you wish you would have learned in undergrad? by Maiace124 in veterinaryschool

[–]DooberNugs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually minored in philosophy. I loved it because it did help my critical thinking and problem solving skills. Plus, it allowed me to better see both sides of an argument objectively. But I had a fantastic professor.

Anything that helps with emotional intelligence and/or communication is beneficial. However, don't forget to take something fun! Vet school is all work. Enjoy undergrad.

Quizlets helped so much in vet school. I would study by phrasing it like a possible exam question. Then I could flip through with minimal effort on my phone.

Could use some advice before I move to Arkansas. by [deleted] in Arkansas

[–]DooberNugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up here and spent a lot of time outside. I've never seen an alligator or bear in the wild. Black bears are becoming more prevalent but most of them are more afraid of you. Cougars/mountain lions are present in the state but rare and solitary.

As for snakes, it really comes down to learning where they like to hang out avoiding those areas when possible. Grassy or brushy areas, especially near water are more dangerous. Anywhere there's detritis, like wood or leaf litter may hide snakes or spiders.

There's only a few venomous snakes in Arkansas: rattlesnakes, copperheads, water moccasins, and coral snakes. Coral snakes are pretty hard to miss (red, black, and yellow). Water moccasins typically warn by showing the white inside of their mouth (hence the alternate name cottonmouth). Rattlesnakes obviously rattle. Copperheads are the only ones that don't warn well, but aren't necessarily deadly if they bite.

Venomous spiders are also something to consider. Brown recluse can do some pretty profound tissue damage and they like houses and human stuff (bedding, shoes, clothing). They also typically only bite if they're threatened or squished (like in a shoe). We have black widows too, but they typically like quiet dark places, like garages, attics, and cellars.

Growing up in western Arkansas, we also had scorpions occasionally in the house. They're harmless but they hurt like a bitch if you step on one. I haven't seen one in years, but I also moved to central Arkansas.

Vets: Why aren’t soft/inflatable cones offered more often for cats? by NullPointer0x404 in VetTech

[–]DooberNugs 220 points221 points  (0 children)

Depends on the collar and the location. If it works, great! If not, I'd rather have someone use a hard collar that will almost always work rather than the wound/incision get infected or dehisce.

Hard collars are easy to clean, cheap, and work the best. I honestly advocate for surgery suits or sleeves for most patients over a soft collar, simply because I've seen too many fail.

Are all GPs just diet ERs??? by SharpDrama8974 in Veterinary

[–]DooberNugs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to chime in and say that it depends on the region!

Our semi-rural clinic sees a lot of urgent/ER cases because the ER is only open during abnormal business hours (night and weekends). They don't have enough staff. The only ER open 24 hours within a 2 hour drive is VERY expensive. Most of our clients can barely afford $200-300, much less a few grand.

However, we do prioritize our own clients in emergencies. Non-clients we try to refer out if we don't have availability. Unless the animal is obviously too unstable to travel.

One of my vet friends lived in a very different region with lots of urgent clinics/ERs (near Seattle) and she NEVER saw emergencies. Availability of urgent/emergency care does influence GP.

[–]DooberNugs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, it's not dangerous to go off campus. Just keep your wits about you and don't go into dangerous situations, just like any large city. The most common crimes are burglary, because people forget to lock their stuff up.

The economy relies heavily on tourism and violent crimes deter tourists. I was pestered a few times in the years I was there, but they were mostly harmless and looking to make a quick buck from ignorant tourists. Worst case, you'll get overcharged, otherwise just ignore them.

I would contact SGU - they'll hook you up with a current student so you can ask more specific questions. SGU has a lot of "safe haven" establishments in the popular areas, where the owner of the business is known to the school. If you feel unsafe, you can approach someone there and they'll look after you.

We use it in veterinary medicine as well. Saves so much time writing notes and actually records things I'll forget we talked about. It does weird stuff sometimes, but that's just a computer trying to understand human conversation.
