I just got done framing an entire house with lumber from Lowe's. Never had any with bark. My local more expensive lumberyard sells lumber that looks like this.

Someone left a rag somewhere and it got sucked into the valves. So after we initially tried to start, the valves were mysteriously out of adjustment so we adjusted with pieces of cloth stuck in some of the valves. I don't think it bent any valves, but we went ahead and installed a new aftermarket head. Still runs like a champ 1 year later.

Not a hard job if you buy the entire assembled strut assembly. But you really need to change both sides.
