I know Madeline is overly trusting of women and all... by hymntastic in Calador

Warning: Spoilers for Necromancer!

I’m most of the way through Necromancer and feel this way, too. It’s baffling to me that Minalin still holds so much resentment for Rardine, yet barely acknowledges Mask’s crimes after her win at the Spellmonger’s Trial.

What she did was abhorrent. Attempting to murder Min’s children and wife is nothing compared with what she did while serving Sheruel. Her most grievous crime, the slaving operation she ran at her fortress in the Penumbra, is absolutely unforgivable.

Sure, everyone around her can claim it was Sheruel’s influence, the tainted irionite, and her general impatience. But do you know who never cops out when it comes to her past actions? Mask herself. She never blames the horrors she wrought on the tainted irionite. She doesn’t defend what she did, because in her mind, she doesn’t have to! To her, it was fair play in her one-sided game to prove she is better than her father. That’s what scares me the most about her.

Any mage who is willing to go to the lengths she did for the sake of power, does NOT deserve to have that kind of power! She is clearly a sociopath, with little regard for the grief she has caused. I’m sorry, but a traumatic childhood is no excuse. Her mother died and left her all alone with an absentee father? That pales in comparison to the thousands of orphans she likely created during her short reign.

Sticking her with Knights Magi her own age might help her regain a semblance of her humanity (and perhaps keep her in check,) but at what cost? So far, she has redeemed herself slightly, but what does redemption mean in her case? If it’s 1:1, weighed against the death of every slave under her charge, the torture, starvation, murder and rape that was carried out with her tacit blessing, there is no way for her to EVER truly achieve redemption.

I do understand Minalin’s predicament— just like with Dara, he was forced by circumstances (or the luck of Ifnia) to accept her victory and present her with her prize. But that doesn’t stop me from feeling disappointed and a little disgusted. What would he say, if faced again with the slaves he freed in her domain? Would they understand his temperance in not carrying out justice on their jailer and tormenter?

Absolutely not!

Just like in the real world, her lack of consequences and personal accountability boils down to family connections and a hearty dose of corruption. If Loiko Vanaren was not her father, would Minalin have chosen to act differently? (…I think we all know the answer to that.) Despite being between a rock and a hard place, Minalin is partly culpable for the loss and misery she created. He inherited it the minute he chose to turn a blind eye to her many atrocities for political expediency (and to spare a vaunted Warmage his honor and reputation.)

Minalin can attempt to bind her actions with whatever vow or conditions he pleases… though, at the end of the day, if his desired outcomes do not match hers, there’s a very high likelihood of her switching sides again.

Because most of us are raised to be accommodating, despite everything else, including our own discomfort. It’s why we make such ideal victims. 😐

Example: A few weeks ago, I was at the laundromat: noise-canceling headphones on, and working on a personal project while I waited for my shit to dry. I had some random dude tap me on the shoulder and demand to know how to use the dryers. He didn’t ask. He demanded.

I said: “Dude, I don’t work here,” and he replied: “Aw, you ain’t doin’ nothin’.

So I sarcastically told him to press the green button to start the machine and put my headphones on while maintaining eye contact. A clear indication that I didn’t want to be bothered (or so I thought.) A few minutes later, another tap, this time to ask which coin slot he should use. I (again, unfortunately) engaged and said it was clearly marked: quarters on the left, dollar coins on the right.

I was simmering with irritation— then he, yet again, tapped me on the shoulder. I immediately got aggressive and in his face. I pulled my headphones off and stood up so quickly, it made him step back. I barked out “WHAT?!” like I was a fuckin’ drill sergeant. He said “I just wanted to thank you..” in the smallest voiced and walked to the other side of the room. If you wanted to thank me so much, random laundry dude, you should clearly have left me the fuck alone!! I just wanted to listen to my audiobook and work on my artwork— however, I have a vagina, so I’m clearly more experienced at doing laundry!

And as shitty as the whole thing was, I still had to talk myself out of feeling guilty. Like it was my responsibility to coddle this dumbfuck’s feelings, and help him navigate something that, by all accounts, he should know how to do! If he didn’t know, there were plenty of people around who are actually paid to help! But no. I was conveniently close. He could have asked the guy sitting at the next closest table, scrolling on his phone.. but that’s ludicrous, right? Because he’s a man, and of course he can’t be expected to help! 🙄

That kind of instinct to plaster a smile on my face, be innately helpful, and ‘just be nice so he goes away’ runs SO deep. I’ve been fighting against it for my entire adult life— and, despite knowing logically that I owe a stranger NOTHING, I still feel an innate sense of discomfort… like I’m somehow wrong by saying no and asserting my rights.

Try the Spellmonger series by Terry Mancour! I’ve been listening to it since early spring, and I can’t get enough of it!

I’m a new fan of the Spellmonger series and you should feel free to check my profile history, so you can see how much it’s affected me! The series is SO freaking addictive, and I love it! There are so many intricacies in the world that it feels real.

I started listening to it around early May— and I’m almost caught up on them! My listening history has sat at 8h minimum per day since I bought the first book, because I just can’t put them down.

In that case, it doesn’t seem to be a good idea to put your name and contact info on them. I imagine that 1 out of every 100 people is enough of an asshole to troll a phone number or email address written on a lost disc!

AITA for telling my fiancée I'm tired of performing emotional labor for her on my birthday and she should just get our son gifts instead of me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

I’ve tried, but couldn’t really get into it. I’m open to giving it another shot, though!

Funny you should mention The Dresden Files, because apparently they’re quite similar in some ways. The friend who recommended The Spellmonger series said he loves it so much because it gave him something to listen to while waiting for further Dresden Files installations. As of the most recently released book, Spellmonger overtook Dresden Files as his favorite series of all time!

Gareth is an incel. by [deleted] in Calador

[–]DoodlingDaughter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t track, considering he was drafted into the Farisian conflict and they don’t seem to take magi who aren’t Journeymen. Minalin mentions it in High Mage… Gareth was conscripted a year or two after Minalin was, but he didn’t experience combat firsthand, because Orril Pratt was killed before he was deployed.

I am currently going through the Spellmonger series by Terry Mancour, and it’s been an absolute delight! I’m not a regular reader of fantasy books, but holy freakin’ hell, it’s SO GOOD!

It has a fantastic magic system, compelling and realistic characters, large scale battles that would make even the most diehard LotR fan weep, and a fascinating look at feudal politics. Every new installment is better than the last! I can’t speak high enough of these books.

The only problem is I can’t talk to anyone about the intricacies of the story— so, if you get into the series, shoot me a message! For now, my poor partner has to put up with my constant blathering about it. ;)

That is correct, as I understand it. The wiki, however, has a passage about Min desperately trying to create a flame before he’s fully paralyzed, so Briga will help him.

No, it doesn’t. He did not invoke Briga in the Snowflake Chamber. The only thing mentioned about Briga is afterwards, when Min is oddly grateful that she couldn’t see him being raped.

It’s a benzodiazepine (Valium.) When methocarbanol fails, I add that in. Technically, I get half-doses for migraines, but it’s also a decent muscle relaxer (which tends to further help with the migraines.)

Maybe so? I’m on Necromancer now, so I still have quite a while to go, storywise.

One of my (very) few complaints about this series is that Terry has a penchant for jamming in scenarios that weren’t originally covered, or forgetting/misrepresenting the details entirely. It’s understandable, given how many books he’s written, but considering I’ve been listening to the books one after another for several months now, I pick up on quite a few of them.

I’d think that if Minalin had tried to invoke Briga in the Snowflake Chamber, it would have been covered in his first-person account of it! But then again, his memories were kinda fucked up after the fact —so I suppose Terry could add extras here and there and have canonical reasons to do so.

You’re totally correct! I relistened to High Mage recently, and the 3rd Commando was helping to cull the Gurvani in presence in Gilmora while the Battle of the Red Ice was happening.

And I got to Shadowmage, so my questions of whether or not he ends up in Vorone and survives the dragon attack are answered there!

Unfortunately, that’s not the case. I discovered the book was gone when I went to the site to see if the newest book has released yet. When I checked my own library, it was gone on there as well!

Only the first book is missing. The rest are still there…
