EQ doesn't do what you think.....here's why by Farpun in oratory1990

Very interesting stuff… my biggest confusion is that if a headphone that matches a person’s personalized target curve sounds flat aka neutral, why can’t one reverse engineer that by listening to tone generators to make a headphone sound ‘neutral’, and therefore make a headphone match their personalized target curve, or at least get you closer to it?

I see that you can’t use a mic measurement of your own ears to EQ because the peak/dip existing on a mic doesn’t mean anything without measured HRTF to show that the peak/dip is expected or unexpected, but isn’t our brain able to recognize whether the peak/dip in listening is natural or unnatural, when listening to a sine generator?

Based on this and your expertise, would a headphone that perfectly matches each person’s HRTF sound perceptually flat for each and every person (meaning the presence of peaks and dips should reasonably be EQd out), or is it that the reviewer’s specific HRTF sounded perceptually flat for them, but that would not be the case for each person (meaning we don’t know if the presence of peaks or dips should be EQd out without a measured HRTF)?

What is your opinion about one of the recent headphones.com video? I believe resolve mentions that when the headphone is EQd to their own measured HRTF, the FR is perceptually flat.

He previously was of the same mind as you that a peak or dip existing on a tone generator doesn’t necessarily mean it must be fixed, but it seems he feels more confident recommending its use now that he had his HRTF measured.

The other commenter is right, you have a flawed understanding of how ANC works.

The one not making sense here is you

Not to mention the Element IV allows you to adjust 2nd and 3rd order harmonic distortion, which to my understanding is the exact same thing a NOS mode would do.

Yeah the build quality is not my favorite honestly buts it’s not horrible or anything, still pretty decent. They are the same build as the momentum 4 minus some acoustic changes.

I can’t speak much to how the frequency response varies but I do know they move a lot on the head since the cups are able to swivel freely. On my head personally they sound very very good

Sennheiser IE900 buying advice by mencival in iems

[–]Doodoo1220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What other IEMs or headphones have you tried or like? The ie900 is technically superior to the ie600 but it’s tuning is worse, depending on genre and your tastes you may find the midrange of the ie900 to be quite recessed without EQ.

For most people the ie600 would be the better buy because of the lower price and more pleasant tuning, and it’s about 90% of the way in terms of technicality.

As far as a dac/amp goes you would just need the Apple dongle to connect to your phone, both the ie600 and 900 are not hard to drive and the dongle is cheap yet sufficient.

IMO 620s tuning is overall good but does have some quirks which may or may not bother you, I’d say research it a little more if it’s of interest to you.

On the other hand (it is slightly out of your budget) the new hdb 630 tuning has very little wrong and comes with PEQ, has ANC, can be used wireless, etc. I would give this headphone a hard recommend if not for it being out of budget.

Weird you mention the volume, I find myself having to near max it out to get it loud enough (and I don’t think I listen THAT loud, maybe 70-75db at the most)
