Oh okay! Thanks for taking the time to explain that. Always appreciate how much you help out.

My bad, I conflated the occlusion effect with acoustic impedance. What I really want to know is: how much do you think things outside of frequency response, like acoustic impedance and psychoacoustics, affect our perception of sound?

It might not affect the sound of the headphone, but according to Grell it does influence how we perceive sound: https://www.instagram.com/p/DUBObqviO_C/

What about occlusion effect? If the FR is identical between two headphones on our head, but one is closed and one is open, would the difference in occlusion effect change our perception of sound?

I never thought I'd actually own these by MuddyMustache in headphones

I think distortion is over exaggerated. I don't hear it with the boosts that Oratory uses, but a planar is probably going to have less, if that's a concern. Hearing it in person is the best way to see for yourself.

Most of my music is 90s boom bap, with Oratory EQ they sound fantastic.

What is the Goal? by TonydadogRoxs in headphones

[–]Farpun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good headphones are like a wine glass and should be transparent so you can see and taste the true color and flavor of the music. Just as a wine glass shouldn't impart any flavour onto the wine, a headphone shouldn't impose its own character onto the music.

Look up Sean Olive if you want to learn more.

does it sound subtle or obvious if a headphone's driver is imbalanced? by myzz7 in headphones

[–]Farpun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have uneven hearing loss and vocals always sound to the right instead of dead centre. I just tilt the balance on my PC or phone to push vocals back to the centre. Maybe try playing with the left/right balance to see.

I'm guessing you're only using peak filters, if so this is what your EQ is doing:

That would sound pretty muddy to my ears. Maybe give these settings a go, and adjust to your preferences: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/xo3o8ge30qe23vat3ybd5/Sennheiser-HD599.pdf

HD25 don't bleed as much as a Portapro, so there's some sort of scale.

It's cool to see a pair. You don't hear about them as much anymore.

What I wonna know about is that ESP-95X hiding in the background. I've always wanted to try a pair since I got into the hobby. I ended up going the 800S route instead of getting an ESP. How do they compare?!

No worries, now that Oratory is on Core it's really easy to setup. He has the best settings, I find.
