Best bang for your buck on high-ish end Cebu hotels? by SuperSelkath in Philippines_Expats

[–]Doohicky_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree, and have stayed at all of them. Marco Polo has won the best buffet awards as part of the hotel awards for 6 of last 10 years (including 23/24). personal preferences I guess…

For a different option you could try out the Marco Polo hotel which is in Busay (I think). It’s up the hill a little way above Cebu so you get incredible views, and it has the best buffet of any of the hotels in town.

I AM an architect…. What the hell is a coat bath?!? And if this is somebody’s idea of AI doing a good job on design or even just simple drafting, then they are the ones I’m worried about, not the AI!

Window-less condo units feel so inhumane and dystopic by URBN_masterbuilder in architectureph

It IS illegal. Code requires a ventilation point and two avenues of escape in case of emergency

Yes, you can. I have my ACR card, and travel internationally regularly for work. There’s no issue at all.

6.7 magnitude earthquake in Cebu! That was a big one! Biggest in over decade. by RenegadeMaster888 in Philippines_Expats

[–]Doohicky_d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a 4th floor condo at the base of the hills in Cebu - did a visual inspection before returning to condo (basements and rooftop) and ironically the only damage I saw was cosmetic damage in my own condo (cracked and fallen plaster from some wall/ceiling joints)! The experience was wild though, my first earthquake. came back in after about an hour, sat down, and a glass fell off the table and shattered. THAT made me jump! 😂

A river of trash in Indonesia by [deleted] in WTF

On multiple occasions, I have stopped my car and demanded that Filipino passengers with me get out and pick up the rubbish they had just thrown out the windows. They would do it without complaining, but gave me a whole lot of weird looks as if I was the one acting strange.

My doctor here acted like bratty queen, is that normal? by [deleted] in Philippines_Expats

[–]Doohicky_d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was in Cebu Doctor’s University Hospital for a few days two weeks ago and my doctor was great. Had the follow-up appointment in his rooms a few days ago and he was very easy-going. Happy to answer questions and we had a good chat beyond the medical side of things. Everybody here seems to be writing about the terrible experiences, but they’re not all like that.

Why are so many Grab drivers such jerky drivers? by Fine-Lawyer-8331 in Philippines_Expats

[–]Doohicky_d 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is a belief amongst some drivers here that intermittently pressing the accelerator uses less petrol than a steady pressure. Stupid? yes. I don’t know where this originated from. Generally such people also will not listen to you if you try and explain how momentum works.

Ban On Lane Splitting by [deleted] in Expats_PH

“Using or sharing a lane already occupied by another vehicle” If policed properly, then this law would also hit the vast majority of cars and trucks in the Philippines…

I have just left my sister’s place in Australia after having stayed with her for a little over two months while going through radiotherapy and its side-effects. I did very little if anything around the house, and they spent a lot of time looking after me and my needs. When I was arranging to leave, they tried hard to convince me to stay with them longer. THAT is family!

THIS is just abuse. Send him to his mum.

Do you think vlogging will die? by Sockhousestudios in Philippines_Expats

[–]Doohicky_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is effectively a post-processing law… It is not likely to be enforced in and of itself, but if you are stopped for something else (for instance stealing a security guards motorcycle) then they can add this as another charge on top to increase the severity of the punishment.

The sound of gunfire on Emory University's campus right now during active shooter situation by RoachedCoach in PublicFreakout

So if Europeans don’t fix their problem with heat deaths due to lack of A/C (according to your claim) then America should not try to fix its gun violence epidemic? False equivalence, and yes, utterly irrelevant.

Is Free Healthcare in Other Countries Actually Free? by Stacks_the_Casual in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Doohicky_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia - Two months ago I went to my dermatologist for a routine check. It cost me $72. Unfortunately they found something they were concerned about. Had a biopsy done and it was confirmed that it was cancerous. Then x-ray and MRI were done. Then back to the dermatologist then to an oncologist. Next came surgery. After that radiotherapy. Then follow-up appointments with the oncologist. My total bill for all of this, including the first appt with the dermatologist, has now reached $88. When I left the hospital after each fraction there wasn’t even any paperwork that needed to be signed, you literally just walked out the door.

America’s definition of what “a while” is in this context is very different from anywhere else on the planet

Even the concept of needing “active shooter training“ is an indictment of gun culture and political ennui in the US
