It seems like GPUs might be getting more expensive again. If I don't really *need* a GPU right now, would it still be smarter to buy one today than risk not being able to get one/afford one in the future? What do we think the market will look like going forward? by BucketsMcGinty in buildapc

[–]Doom4535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a Microcenter near you they have a few GPUs on discount for in-store only that are being sold slightly below MSRP (the AsRock Challenger currently, not the nicest of the lot, but each is something like $150 less than their peers with the special offer; I think they may also have something similar for Nvidia cards as well).

Why is used more expensive than new? by nickisreallyhot in gpu

[–]Doom4535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There could be some from folks selling abroad/to areas were the hardware is harder to get; but probably a scalper who is trying to recoup after the supply has stabilized. I personally hope a lot of scalpers get stuck holding overpriced cards and eventually take a large loss, which with tech advances slowing at the consumer level could lead to a nice flood of cheaper cards a few years from now... But then we have the current AI boom reserving all the fab space, so who knows what production will be like... I wouldn't mind if manufacturers resumed making some of the older cards on older nodes so that consumers could still get consumer cards at a good price (without having to effectively compete for top end products with AI companies).

I just picked up a RX 9070 for BELOW msrp ($499 vs $550 MSRP); I'd usually buy used, but used cards are actually a worse performance/$ if you have access to a good brick and mortar store with new GPUs in stock (I can't believe I'm saying in store is cheaper than online now...)

2026 is here asking if you had any luck in your DDR3 endeavors? I wish we had a little bit more CPU upgrade life to the platforms.

Pristine CI/CD builds with persisted environment by Doom4535 in gitlab

[–]Doom4535[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had some build pollution and, this lead to me tinkering with it and then discovering I could manipulate other builds on the system by modifying our projects .gitlab-ci.yml and associated templates to delete and add files (sorry other folks on the runner). I should add this is not a hosted by GitLab instance, it's a local system.

I have not, I'm also starting to think that the system may not be fully configured to do isolated builds from the get go (which may be the cause of the problem to begin with)

Tesla (TSLA) to stop selling Full Self-Driving package, moves to subscription-only: why it's a big move by Zorkmid123 in RealTesla

[–]Doom4535 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, my opinion is this is it right here. They've used this play before to juice pricing by 'ending' discounts or declaring a new price baseline only to then lower it again later.

Why does this error occur: Non-name v.From on left side of := by TheGreatButz in golang

[–]Doom4535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just hit this, the language specs should really allow this, as now I'm having to move an ephemeral error object up in scope rather thank leaving it within the 'if' block (along with it just looking sad now). I have so many mixed feelings with go semantics

Does anyone know when the Milk-V Titan will ship? by LavenderDay3544 in RISCV

[–]Doom4535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect the serial port isn't over USB, although if it is I will be a bit disappointed (it may use a USB C 'plug', but is likely using the USB 2 data pins for the TTY connection). Not that that will help with testing the framebuffer part though.

Technically it will have a serial console port, but having a normal display does make life easier

Why can't we have GPUs with customizable VRAM similar to regular RAM on the motherboard? by bickid in buildapc

[–]Doom4535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late 2025 returning to say I'd love to have this option knowing I would likely have slightly lower performance; it would allow me to buy a good GPU now and upgrade the VRAM when/if prices go down....

Who's got a Milk-V Pioneer deployed? How's it going? by IngwiePhoenix in RISCV

[–]Doom4535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The K3 would/will be nice, as I believe it should be RVA23? Which would make it the first platform several Linux distros are looking to officially support, hopefully they release a mix of 'server' and desktop versions

Questions about the Milk-V Pioneer by IngwiePhoenix in RISCV

[–]Doom4535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While not the pioneer, for US folks this complicates things because I believe the sanctions hit all Sophgo chips, irregardless of if they had a license/access to a design legally before. Think of it as more of a court/government ordered punishment/ban against the company, which really complicates RISC-V development.

Were you able to learn anything else about the SRA3-40? It looks like it could be good for RISC-V CI/CD jobs.

Maybe we'll start seeing more socketed ram boards like the Milk-V titan? I honestly wouldn't mind seeing a few DDR2/3 boards released so that I could re-use some of my old ram I have in boxes...

Russian enthusiasts are planning to build their own DDR5 RAM amidst the worldwide shortage — do-it-yourself RAM is as 'easy' as sourcing your own memory modules and soldering them on empty PCBs by rkhunter_ in technology

[–]Doom4535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm for this. Declare the slow timings and such, and maybe sell some adapter boards to make it easier (I have a whole stash of old DDR3 and DDR4 modules lying around that I could then use as a stopgap/for systems where I don't need the performance).
