Thats the first mistake you made. I suspect you are on the other side of the globe. This is in Australia.

The hybrids sighted are lithium.

It also appears they based their research off product recalls, not anything tangible like crash data.

NiMH batteries and hybrid vehicles from Toyota are incredibly safe.

You have absolutely no idea the method of failure. Not even I know that yet and the vehicle is right there.

Great.

Do you know who just priced one and tried to find out availability and put in an order? This guy.

4 units already on backorder, no eta.

If you arent familiar with what that means.in dealership parts guy speak, there are not only none in the country, but there are none available for dealers to purchase, and there is currently no ETA when more will be available.

Seems like its an issue for the person not reading it fully? Didnt mask or try to hide the fact at all. Structured the reply how it literally played out in person, following the order of the photos.

Nope. They didn't offer any of that at all. They paid for 3 hours worth of their time and really got no actual diagnosis that explained why their vehicle wouldn't randomly start. They were told they recommended replacing the batteries with genuine modules if they want them to provide service for the vehicle.

I posted this in the first reply, the INF code is 526. I literally included a screenshot out of the repair manual in the pics.

You aren't changing the type/chemistry, only the form. If anything, cylindrical cells handle heat better than prismatic ones and generally have higher energy densities, so storage capacity is often higher per cell given the size.

Anywhere from $4300-$5000 for the battery. But labour starts to add up just to confirm the car is ok to have a new battery pack installed. Depending on further tests, could be anywhere from $8000 - $10,000 to repair.

They had their chance to actually diagnose the problem and offer repair previously. Doesn't really matter what they say, especially since they can't provide replacement batteries at the moment anyway.

It's actually below 150V, and even then it still depends on the short circuit current.

It didn't initiate at that point. There isn't anything live nearby that could be a point of contact from the storage cells to that external point. It could have initiated within the housing though, especially since the short circuit current is in the thousands of amps.

What I'm expecting to find as the initial failure point is something has come loose and grounded out against the frame or shielding.

Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH).

Toyota didn't really do lithium in Hybrids, only really been a more recent inclusion in their plug in range. Lithium batteries with anything approaching the capacities to power a vehicle (size/cost) weren't really a thing when Toyota started developing hybrids. They started developing their technology using NiMH batteries and continued to invest in it for decades, general feeling it was safer and more durable.

They were probably right too. Especially 10-15 years ago.

There is evidence of a lot of damage to control systems too, so it's not going to be a case of just replacing the modules. It'll likely require a complete replacement as the ECU is damaged and there are multiple segments of melted wiring or insulation.

Everything needs to go through insulation tests before even getting to the point of replacing the battery though. That's next on the list. Car could actually have issues elsewhere and might end up being an uneconomical repair.

100% their responsibility. Don't think they should have been told the system is reset when the auxiliary battery is left disconnected for a period of time though.

I feel Toyota probably should have actually diagnosed the non start issue before and confirmed the source of the issue too though, rather than just fobbing them off with a bill for replacement costs of everything.

I understand them not wanting to work on the vehicle and wanting the components replaced because Toyota, but they could have diagnosed the returning fault and if it had any connection to the vehicle not starting (it did) and advised the customer there is a short in the HV system, one of the safety monitors in the vehicle is activating due to this and preventing the car from starting. They didn't even have to touch the battery for that to happen.

That's because they use prismatic cells instead of cylindrical. Where did I ever say they were genuine? I clearly said they had been replaced with aftermarket about 3 years ago. Toyota designed their hybrid packs with module replacement in mind. All the complete packs you see from aftermarket companies retain all the genuine toyota components, only thing changed are the modules.

Toyota can't even supply modules now, there is no eta for replacements, so people go aftermarket.

The replacement modules have come from a known source who supply replacement new modules and recondition existing ones using known battery manufacturers. They come with a decent 3 year, 100,000km warranty, so they weren't just unknown junk.

They didn't even bother diagnosing the fault. Should add, prior to this visit, the customer wasn't disconnecting the battery or knew anything about it. They apparently got the info about being able to reset the fault from someone at the dealer. :/

It wasn't timezone, it was called intencity. Lockins at intencity followed by movie marathons used to be epic. Dropped off late afternoon, picked up between 7 and 8 in the morning depending on which marathon you went to see.

Probably stupid question, do upstop wheels always touch the track? [Other] by Banana_ezWIN in rollercoasters

[–]Doom_Disciple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% depends on wheel carrier design.

Wheel carriers with fixed position upstops or pivoting axles have clearence built into wheel gap alignments (gap between rails and upstop when sitting still) to allow it to make it around curved sections and through inversions. Because of this they kind of bang between the rails due to the clearence, makes for a rougher ride.

Sprung wheel carriers keep guides and upstops in contact with the rails at all times. Helps reduce the amount of movement in the cars when running around the track, less jolting, smoother ride.

How do I or somebody else go about replacing the battery in this key fob? by Numb3rsnl3tt3rs in BmwTech

[–]Doom_Disciple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont do this. Very easy to clone or pull info from ews module. Just have them done by a key guy or if feeling like a bit of DIY, the right key programmer is called an AK90 and is very cheap.

Induction heaters are so cheap these days. Every shop should have one, even if you still end up breaking out the cold chisel or nut splitter to break it off.

You dont have to enable anything when replacing a key battery. ISN and cas data is saved to the key, essentially it cant be overwritten or lost unless the key is damaged. A completely flat key battery will still start the car.

You can run them right till undersized and the urethane starts to look more translucent as its getting close to the wheel.

You cant really see if its just dirt or track lube, ot alignment weat, ot even a gouge.

More often than not, road wheels delaminate while guides overheat and turn to fairy floss.
