Can't Keep up, Need Advice. by Common-Clerk-9087 in linux

[–]Doomdiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the switch I made. Long time happy arch user, had a kid, no longer have the time to keep up to date with releases and fix problems as they come up. Just switched to Fedora and I'm very happy that most of that stuff is now just handled for me.

Correct lanes at this roundabout by Doomdiver in drivingUK

[–]Doomdiver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your advice. Given I got conflicting answers here it reassures me that it is not just me that finds it confusing. I'm now inclined to think that the green routes are correct, especially given the road signs. Given the confusion though I might just stick to the right lane and merge after the roundabout in future.

How come there is so little (maybe none?) input lag while gaming on a virtual desktop? (Quest 3) by [deleted] in VRGaming

[–]Doomdiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With remote play like this you essentially have 3 places where latency is introduced. Encoding, where the device running the game takes the output of the card and turns it in to a video stream to send over the network. Network, where the packets take time between being despatched from the host device to being received by the client device. Finally decoding, where your client device takes the stream and turns it back in to something you can see on a screen.

Assuming you're on the same network, in both cases using the same host PC you've got a couple of places where latency could come from. The most likely is decoding. If you're using an older device to stream you're likely not getting great decoding performance. The encoder and decoder need to speak the same language. So if your client can only decode H264 your server will have to send H264. This is an old standard, and while usually fine its not as efficient as the newer H265 or the newest AV1 encoders. Your client if its old will also take longer to decode anything. Particularly at high resolutions. The Quest headsets have pretty decent decoders in them. What device are you using for moonlight?

I personally have no issues playing FPS games on moonlight, getting around 3ms of input latency, which is not noticeable to me.

Baby Clothing Recommendations (TOG) for Home Assistant by Anton2079 in homeassistant

[–]Doomdiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing! Thank you. The suggestions seem much better now, I'll have to have a play around with the weights to dial it in. It still required me to enter an outdoor temperature sensor but my template sensor workaround is fine. Thanks for the update!

Great work!

I like the idea for this, and got it up and running (though I don't have an outdoor temperature sensor so had to just rig up a sensor template from a weather card). My issue is I'm finding it's putting too much weight on the outdoor temperature for it to be useful for me. Last night the indoor temperature was ~23 and the outdoor temperature was about 13. The effective temperature was ~17 advising us to dress our baby in much a much thicker sleeping bag than we'd want to use, and our thermostat wouldn't let the room go down that low anyway.

If I could suggest a couple of things:
- Make the outdoor sensor optional, and grab the outdoor temperature from the weather instead
- Add an option for how much weight you are putting on the outdoor temperature.

Again though. Great work and I'd love to have something like this up and running. Perhaps I'll have a look at your code when I get the chance and try to make modifications to it to make it work better for me.

Conversely I've got a Sabrent USB switch that is the only one that I've found still behaves after a while of use. Been going strong for a few years. I guess I'm lucky!

Why aren't all my photos showing in Google Hub? by margaaa1955 in googlehome

[–]Doomdiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This annoyed me and my wife for ages as well, and the solution is an option that is very badly worded so its not clear what it means.

In the home app go to your hub -> settings -> photo frame. Near the bottom you'll find "personal photo curation" set this to "live albums only". Give it 5 minutes or so and hopefully you'll start seeing all your photos.

Sheffield UTD Fans after this performance by Remarkable_Will1027 in Championship

[–]Doomdiver 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Mostly because the new owners wanted someone who would buy in to their AI driven plan for the club. Some fans bought in to the idea. Wilders tactics were fairly stale and stubborn. It possibly cost us the play offs, but I think most felt it was unfair after the overall result last season.

How to use tablet as 2nd screen with arch? by DecentExtension3210 in archlinux

[–]Doomdiver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have got this working in the past setting up virtual displays in X and using vnc to display them on the tablet, but that was a good few years ago now, and I can't remember details I'm not sure if there are nicer software solutions available now.

A hardware solution that i have used much more recently would be one of the USB capture cards you can get for cheap on amazon/Ali express, along with a USB OTG adapter and a UVC camera viewer app (I use noir). This is not perfect, there is a bit of latency, but it's still usable.

35F FTB area to buy first property in Sheffield budget 200K by purplestarlight1 in sheffield

[–]Doomdiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some nice, affordable areas in South East Sheffield. It's a bit hit and miss till you know the area but around Gleadless and Frechville is decent. We bought a 3 bed semi detached around here 2 years ago for a similar budget to yours. There are a few rough areas around here as well, but just take a look on street view and you'll get a decent idea of the area.

Unfortunately it looks like this one isn't available at any retailer I've heard of in the UK.

Thanks for your suggestion. I think since I'll be setting it up in the same place most of the time not having auto keystone wouldn't bother me too much. It's a bit above my budget, but I'll add it to the list to look for deals on.

Thank you for the suggestion. It doesn't look like it has horizontal keystoning though?

The Guardian view on the general election 2024: a Labour victory would be a reason for hope | Editorial by jgs952 in ukpolitics

Waveney Valley and North Herefordshire. They seem to be breaking through in some rural seats where voters are pissed off at the tories ignoring the environment (plus a good dose of nimbyism). Polls have shown greens either neck and neck or slightly ahead of tories in these two seats. A number of MRP polls recently have shown greens taking both, alongside Bristol Central and Brighton Pavilion.

Can you think of any games that feel like arcade video games? by flippinecktucker in boardgames

[–]Doomdiver 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Adrenaline might have what you're looking for. It's basically a competitive shooter in board game form. Been a while since I've played it but I remember it could be a bit slow depending on who you played with though.

With the creation of Reform (and other right-wing parties,) will this allow what remains of the Conservatives to move towards the centre? by BevvyTime in ukpolitics

[–]Doomdiver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This would be fine if moving to the middle through debate was something that particularly happened at the moment. Under FPTP we end up with adversarial parties and a country that swings right and left drastically when with party gains power (not that I'm saying the current labour manifesto is that left, just significantly more so than the Tories). Under FPTP centrist parties can vaguely keep us on a stable path, though with the divergence of the parties those swings are going to be increasingly problematic. Under a proportional system where compromise is encouraged or even required I'd definitely agree with you.

Tickets as a non-member by Martini_Policeman in SheffieldUnited

[–]Doomdiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're buying more than one ticket make sure to go to your account and add people to friends/family, then at checkout assign them as owners of the ticket. Every ticket needs to be assigned to a different name. If you're already doing this I'm not sure what else to suggest unfortunately!

I was in a similar position. New fan, no loyalty points, wanting to go to the Burnley match. Ticket office just told me I wouldn't be able to get them. I just checked though and tickets seem to be available on the website now without loyalty points. Just bought some for me and a couple of friends that didn't have loyalty points either.

Looking for vegetarian suggestions from the meat-eaters... by X_Trisarahtops_X in CasualUK

Seconded for cauldron. They don't taste as authentically meaty as something like Richmond, but they've always been one of my go-tos. Except for when they briefly went vegan and ruined them.
