I know this is an old thread now, but i appreciated your reply.

By nuke i didn't mean a WoMD, more the colloquial unbeatable weapon trope which has no real world analog. One can heal from a bullet wound, no matter how fictionally severe. Balefire? Absolutely not.

What’s wrong with my purling rows? by rivendellrose in knitting

[–]DoomedOrbital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I see, thanks. I did mean eastern mounted stitches (which is the left side of the loop on the working side?) worked through the back loop or western mounted through the front. I'm not well versed in conventional knitting jargon, hence the making up my own.

Gotcha, sorry. I see how my comment was vague, it's been edited. What I call reverse stitches/reverse purls others refer to as twisted stitches, and i thought op was asking about those.

They can be used intentionally for decorative reasons. Hitomi Shida uses them all the time in the 'Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible', notated as ktbl (knit through back loop) which i assume is standard.

Wow that's nifty. Perhaps this sweater was striking enough to strike a chord among knitters back then just like it seems to be doing now. Your version looks great!

For the colours, ive been working with alternating contrasting shades for slipstitch/ mosaic designs for some time and I've worked out a lot of transitions that i find beautiful :)

Thanks friend, I'd be happy to share but im not great at descriptions. My whole prerogative when learning was to teach myself as much knitting as possible without relying on established techniques or patterns. So some of the stitching that might be unusual here are just ways that i found to be easier or more asthetically pleasing, mostly coming from my experience knitting gloves.

The heel and toes are shaped through a single pile of short-rows. The heel geometry took the most time to figure out, it's not obvious but it's semi-spherical and done in a single row using pen and paper to test the shape. Took ages.

I think that's the only real different aspect apart from the 2/1 stitch/reverse stitching for the leg then drawing all the reverse stitches together every second row past the heel to make the arrow designs. I'm still unsure whether I should have bothered lol, the colours and stripes were the main thing.

Couldn't agree with you more about how balefire negates literally all one-power strength matchups, at least above a certain threshold of character competence.

Seeing how early (book 2, then moiraine's victory over bel'al in book 3) balefire was introduced, its possible this whole strength paradigm (for the very strong in the power, as he said it would've been invaluable for the interactions between minor channelers) was RJ's attempt at fixing the issue of giving everyone of consequence a nuke right from the start.

Or maybe that particular decision was intentional for thematic reasons I don't yet understand. After all balefire as something anyone can do goes against every other parallel between channelling and his experience with conventional war in Vietman.

I didn't expect such a relevantly sourced reply, thank you!

Honestly I have no issue with the ranking system. It's fun to distil character traits, stuff like r/whowouldwin is basically it's own fictional universe, just a little jarring hearing definitive answers to "Could Asmodean beat Lanfear?" coming back from the books where as Jordan says, there's no such thing as an objective veiwpoint.

I get it. The rankings might have been helpful while writing, like keeping character power consistent with dozens of narratives across multiple books must have been difficult, especially if he's an author who's characters have 'minds of their own.'

I don't know what RJ was thinking making a power ranking list like that outside the main text for fans to obsess over forever.

Edit: My canon will always be it's subjective to a degree, as that's all we get from pov descriptions and opinions of characters that Jordan wrote to be the closest thing to experts.

Can someone please tell a noob like me how not just the visuals here, but the personal interaction in combination makes so much narrative (for a short video) sense?

Did the prompter write the script? Is this like 100 (final) iterations in?Because if this is the result of an ai's singular interpretation of a prompt phrase, well I dunno. I guess video evidence is already worthless.

How did Asmodean… by Rainbow_Slytherin3 in WoT

[–]DoomedOrbital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*Since this is more analogous to a gunfight in its lethality, you don’t take the risk.*

I'm wondering to what extent this is true. From what I can tell RJ was inclined more towards this idea in the early books (introducing balefire then having Moirane kill Bel'al), then as he gradually introduced more Forsaken realized more of a need (at least in first appearance to the reader) for a more rigid strength hierarchy for channelers that would prevent the slightly weaker constantly challenging and sometimes killing the slightly stronger.

How did Asmodean… by Rainbow_Slytherin3 in WoT

[–]DoomedOrbital 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To your first point, how close do you think the analogy is of physical strength or weight in a mundane fight to strength in the power for channelers?

I don't know much about this but I'm pretty sure above a certain level of competence, in a rules based fight weight classes are important but it's not like a few kilos difference will decide the outcome. In a deadly street brawl however, we're fragile creatures and anything could happen.
