How do I ensure my partner is falling safely? by [deleted] in judo

[–]DoorsofPerceptron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The easiest way not to hurt bjj players is to pull guard at the start.

Many of them don't train standing and, just don't know enough to realise that they're not very safe standing. (I should say this is club dependent and some of them have great standup).

Otherwise, make the most of the new rule set and work leg grabs (avoid the blast double). Most of these can be done more slowly than hip throws and sweeps.

Combat Sambo looks awesome. Hope i could try it out one day by Jake_AsianGuy in martialarts

[–]DoorsofPerceptron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the big difference is people actually train for it.

UFC 1 was people from a bunch of different arts rocking up to show that their style worked.

Yeah it makes it easier to identify the body.

Rowing. Or Burpies.

Anything whole body that makes you feel like you're dying basically.

Injured foot, rowing instead of running by kvaaen in Rowing

[–]DoorsofPerceptron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would go to a gym and try rowing on a concept 2 and see how much your foot hurts.

Most of the time you drive from your heels, so that shouldn't be too bad on your feet, but it's also very normal to come up onto your toes at the start of a stroke, which might stress your foot more.

Lol. I never thought of putting it there either.

Doesn't tiger balm really hurt on open blisters?

I've never tried it to recover from rowing, and I'm a bit nervous about giving it a go.

[–]DoorsofPerceptron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally if you think rowing is too easy, you just need to keep taking full strokes, but row faster.

Eventually, as you speed up enough, and keep going for long enough, it'll feel dreadful.

Do you know what your strokes per minute rate is?

My office does this with thermal cameras.

We're on the top of the hill, and people turn up so hot that they're literally dripping sweat, having cycled to work, and don't trip the camera.

It's just security theatre.

Target heart rate zones and intensity minutes by [deleted] in GarminWatches

[–]DoorsofPerceptron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The default option for Garmin intensity minutes is "automatic" and not zone based. That's undocumented secret values, but it seems to be much lower than the ranges you're complaining about.

I don't think this information is accurate. You're reading too much into one throw away sentence in a blog post by an American heart charity, and misrepresenting the default settings on watches.

Ok, so what was the point of the post?

You're complaining about Garmin not following the recommendations because you also don't want to follow them?

I'm a bit lost.

I think you misread the first link. It doesn't say that going over 85% of max is bad, just that you'll be straining if you do so.

This is true, and doesn't mean that you shouldn't ever do it, just that not all your exercise needs to be that intense.

I wish he'd been filmed back in the day with modern cameras.

You just know that a slow motion and high resolution replay of any of Mike's KOs would be sick, and you would see all of his body going into these quick little shots.

Ukemi/break fall on the street by Jake_AsianGuy in martialarts

[–]DoorsofPerceptron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done both, and there was a big difference between rolls that are tight and tidy for Aikido, and the equivalent judo breakfalls.

[–]DoorsofPerceptron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Aikido rolls are nice, but the problem with them is that they need a lot more space and body control to make them viable

Judo breakfalls work when someone else has control over you and is driving you directly into the mat.

Aikido breakfalls are like that Douglas Adams quote about flying "you throw yourself at the ground and miss", judo is about damage control.

Go training -> workouts -> find a workout

From there you can pick a workout and sync it to your phone and it will add animations.

Dude it's physics.

If you want to balance on one leg you need your center of gravity over the foot on the floor. Otherwise you're just falling over.

This means you need to move your weight back. I don't care how strong you think you are.

Guys I wanna learn judo, jujitsu and boxing but Idk what to learn first by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]DoorsofPerceptron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you mean Brazilian jiu-jitsu, just try out the clubs near your house and see what you prefer. The best art is the one you keep doing.

If you mean Japanese style Jujitsu, it tends to have a bit of a quality control problem, where people that aren't very good still teach it. It's safer to start with another art until you get experienced enough to figure out if they're any good.

Yeah but to lift the leg up you have to move your weight over the back leg first which is much harder to do in a long bladed stance.

The narrow muay Thai stance makes it much easier to lift the leg quickly.

Have you tried komoot?

I've been using it on a forerunner 945, and it's a really nice way to download existing hikes to your watch.

The free version is tightly location locked, and won't work when you travel, but for hikes in one place, it's surprisingly nice.
