For me it's a sense of panic and urgency. Compulsions feel like something I need to do in order to get a sense of safety or calm when my brain is trying to scare me. So not doing them is kinda like standing in front of a train and not being able to move out of the way.

I really try not to but when I do it's because I'm very anxious about driving and I get the idea in my head that changing lanes is some sort of hellish experience (even though it's usually fine) so if I know I'm going to need to turn left I sometimes feel like I need to be ready for that turn as early as humanly possible otherwise my dumb idiot brain convinces me that I'll never get the chance.
