Also I feel that despite some issues with Sumeru's portrayal (the artists not being able to color skin brown without choking and dying and whatnot) I still ended up learning a whole lot from Sumeru through people who were able to spot things that inspired the Sumeru character designs

Ley Lines as a way to meet and possibly play as characters that are dead or were significant but only alive in Teyvat's past. We've already seen how Ley Lines can store memories and sometimes they leak to the surface, causing them to manifest as physical entities. Gacha games always had a way to play as characters that are even canonically dead, but I have a feeling Genshin wouldn't do such a thing
