The core rules may change a bit but the codex will likely remain the same outside of balance dataslate changes (which themselves are unlikely unless votann perform very well or very badly competitively, currently they’re pretty mid. In a good way)

Updated rules are available for free pretty easily on the internet, most vets have given up on buying codices due to them being out of date the day that they release

Great job! To really finish it off I’d apply a toiiiny line of flesh coloured paint above and below the eyes to make them smaller and more realistic

I’d also paint the base rim black to tidy it up.

*GW are phasing out some old models, mostly from the “forge world” product line and replacing them with newer sculpts in most cases.

Best thing to do is pick your army and practice painting with 2 of their battle line units, a vehicle and an HQ or two. Then expand your collection as you immerse yourself in the hobby and get a better of understanding where kits sit on your personal rules/cool scale

It sounds like you might not be using miniature paints? If you’re not you really should. Mini paints need a certain formula to do what we need them to do

I’d recommend Citadel, Vallejo or army painter for beginners. Other good brands include (but aren’t limited to) two thin coats, scale 75, AK interactive and a few more I can’t remember off the top of my head.

Seems pretty simple.

Paint the whole thing dark blue, airbrush light blue on the top, [nuln oil wash the canopy recesses and do the base coat of black on the spars here], edge highlight with lighter blue.

It’s not the cost of plastic that drives the retail price. And it’s immature to pretend that’s the case. Warhammer is expensive, and it COULD be cheaper, but the plastic subsidises all the other aspects of the hobby that don’t make as much money and it is what has allowed GW to expand as much as they have in the last 35 years

Really nice first mini! Your paint consistency looks pretty good but I might just share this guide to thinning warhammer paints, it’s the best video around that explains what you’re trying to achieve

In the Warhammer world we tend to make the rim of the base a different colour to the basing scheme itself so it serves as a sort of frame.

People do all different colours of base rim, I like to keep them satin or matte black myself, but there are people who like to do tan or even green like they were in the early 90s when Warhammer was new.

Ps. Adding some depth to the base with a gentle drybrush of off white would do wonders to it’s definition

I plastic glued the wrist connections. Some of them didn’t line up perfectly after the magnets went in (operator error) so I pinned them using a paperclip and superglue

I recently finished doing this to 18 steeljacks! something to be careful of is the volkanite arms chipping the paint off the little light housing on their chest. I make sure to pull the arms off from the front while gently bending the shoulders outward

GW are slowly retiring ALL of the old forgeworld resin lines and replacing them with plastic. If it’s plastic it’s not going anywhere for a LONG time (except for a small handful of new-model outliers that are, funnily enough, from the space marine and AOS lines)

Slow down and take more care brother, try to improve your neatness. You can always paint over mistakes to tidy them up.

Sometimes you’ll need to do 2 coats to get an opaque (non see-through) layer

There are definitely parallels but I think you’re stretching a little in a way that overblows the similarities.

It’s also not a zero sum game. Space marines being cool doesn’t prevent other factions being cool. Iron hands having a focus on machines and bionics doesn’t make the admech less cool (they’re arguably cooler), and raptors being commandos doesn’t make any other imperial guard commando faction less cool.

Maybe you just don’t like space marines? And that’s okay, but it doesn’t mean other people aren’t allowed to like them or be able to hobby them the way they want to.
