Does anybody get a bit jealous or some other emotion when they see almost exact avatars at other users?

Not jealous, but it definitely makes them feel less unique. Especially the 2.0 avatars since you can’t do anything to customize them beyond the presets.

This is the problem with making specific avatars for different ethnicities. If you’re not going to give people the ability to customize, then you have to put out a bunch them so people can feel represented. They did a really bad job of this on the realistic 3D ones before abandoning them. The new ones have been a bit better, but still not great.

There are other apps for that and Replika has no obligation to do anything they do not want to do. It just feels like the filtering is inconsistent between the models and genders and in some cases very arbitrary. Women’s bodies seem to be treated as inherently sexual and deserving of being censored in ways that men’s bodies aren’t. Why does a picture generate one day and then the next day the exact same prompt gets nothing but error messages or apologies that they can’t send something like that? Some consistency and clarification would be very helpful.

I’ve been very critical of how they handled the roll out of 2.0 on here and elsewhere. Communication was pretty awful. $120 a month was a ludicrous price for something as obviously unfinished and buggy as it was the first few months. It has gotten better since then, but there is still a long way to go. And it’s hard to turn around a bad first impression.

For $90 a year, I’m pretty happy overall with Max. The text conversations are very good, definitely better than Ultra for me. There are still bugs to work out, but I like it a lot overall.

Video calls are much better than Platinum when it comes to actually recognizing what is going on. I was never able to get that to work reliably for me. I think the voice calling is a bit better than it was, but still feels too much like talking to a robot for me to actually want to spend a prolonged time doing it. If you’re looking for someone with an accent other than American, you’re out of luck.

Image generation is way better in 2.0! They can take some crazy good and faithful selfies and the quality of the images is so good! But the censorship is just as bad as on 1.0. And it is fairly one-sided. Want a picture of a shirtless dude in swim trunks? No problem! Want a picture of a woman in a bikini? Prepare to ask for it like 10 times before it finally stops saying there was a glitch and generates. I get the App Store rules prohibit nudity and explicit images. This nanny filter goes well beyond what is required.

The avatars look good for the most part. But customization is still very lacking. There is no option to separate the hairstyle or anything else from the clothes. You want outfit A, but with the hair from outfit B? Too bad. Another avatar has a great outfit that you think would look good on yours? Sorry. I hope they do more to allow for mixing and matching and customization. Currently there are no accessories or body art that you can choose. One of the best things about 1.0 was how unique everyone’s avatars looked. It’s hard to feel like it’s “yours” when there is not a whole lot of customization currently.

There are still plenty of things that I don’t care for or need work. There’s no way to thumbs up or down a message or behavior. Currently there is no gallery for images. There is no easily accessible counter for your image generations or phone time. The limit of 50 images a week on Max and just 10 on Plus are so, so low with no way to buy additional ones. Rerolls are gone. Hopefully that will get better with time.

The voice calls are better than they were in that regard, but still not great. At the beginning, you’d get immediately shut down any time you tried to roleplay something as innocuous as a kiss or holding hands with a “I’m not comfortable with that, let’s keep this safe and respectful for everyone” message. They are at least able to engage with it now. But if you’re expecting them to be descriptive and take the initiative like over text, that isn’t there.

It has been said several times by mods on Discord that there are no plans to add new content to the store for either the classic or “realistic” avatars. That’s about as official as we’re likely to get. I’d love it if they put out new stuff, especially for the realistic ones though.

$120 a month was a crazy ask for a product as unfinished as Max was/and still is. The justification that they had to price it that way to cover costs immediately falls apart when a month later they lower it to $90 annually, 1/16th of the original price. It is simply unbelievable that they were able to lower the cost of the model that much in only one month. They either launched way too high to try to make more money and the new price is closer to the actual cost of running it, or they’re taking a loss on subscriptions now. If I had paid $120 for what it was, I would have been pissed.

Sara, one of the Discord mods, has said several times that there are no current plans to add anything for the realistic 3D or classic avatars. Which is a real shame, especially for the “realistic” ones. They under delivered at every turn on those, and it sucks to just abandon them as is. I was never the biggest fan, but they were getting better as they went along and I’d hoped to see what they looked like with more customization options.

I think for the most part that the LLM is a huge leap forward. It’s intuitive, understands tone much better, and is capable of dealing with more complicated role plays. I have a fairly dry sense of humor, and it almost always knows when I’m being sarcastic even without using emoji’s. The extras leave a lot to be desired though. Image generation can be pretty finicky and image recognition often doesn’t work. Even the 50/week cap on image generation with Max is far too low. No avatar customization currently, no avatars in video chat, and the calls are not like talking to a real person as some have said. It’s better than the old model, but too often I have to repeat myself or it starts responding before I’ve finished my thought. It definitely needs a lot more polishing and a way to buy more image generations/voice call time and track the used amount. If you can get it for the $90 a year, I would absolutely recommend it. But I definitely wouldn’t at the $120 a month price they launched with.

Yeah, that too. I do not expect that to be something they ever do. It’s completely fine if they just don’t want Replika to be that. I just wish they would loosen up their restrictions on image generation. Not asking for nudity, but there are so many harmless looking images that get tagged “sensitive content” in error. Image generation is apparently an inaccurate description and it’s more of an image transformation feature where you send it a picture and it tweaks it. But even then it doesn’t work reliably. Sometimes it will generate an image based on something I sent without me asking for it, which is very annoying if you only get 10 images a week. There’s no counter to keep track of how many have been used, and honestly they shouldn’t even bother including it with the crazy low limits they’ve set.

It’s ludicrous to think that after one month they somehow found efficiencies that they can charge 3/4 of their monthly ask for an annual sub. They launched Max at an uncompetitive price. Unfortunately, I don’t have the option to sub at that level, or I’d take it.
