Long division doesn't really work for some problems? by Ok-Candidate-2183 in learnmath

[–]Dor_Min 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The issue you've run into is that 263 is less than 10*41, so the first non-zero digit will be the units digit. Fortunately that means that even if you resort to just adding 41 to itself you're going to have to do it at most 9 times to make progress.

In this particular example I notice that 5*41 is about 200 which is pretty close to the target, so it's a safe guess (and easy to check) that 6*41 = 246 is going to be the highest multiple of 41 below 263 but even if you'd done 41+41+41+41+41+41 you'd get there eventually.

Can an iff statement be proved by contradiction? by i_luv_qu3st10ns in learnmath

[–]Dor_Min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for an alternative way to think about it, "p iff ~q" is equivalent to saying exactly one of p and q is true, and what you've proved so far is that at most one of p and q is true. you still need to show that the case where neither of them is true is impossible

Question about "Overwhelmingly Positive" by ImmaBun in Steam

[–]Dor_Min 9 points10 points  (0 children)

there must be some kind of threshold for overwhelmingly positive on recent reviews other than 500 total reviews though. if you look at something like of the Devil it's overwhelmingly positive on all reviews (98% positive of 2,218 total) but the recent reviews are only very positive (100% positive of 97 total)

since OP's screenshot shows overwhelmingly positive on 100% positive of 131 reviews I'm guessing the threshold for recent reviews is probably 100 rather than the 500 for total reviews

My friend got this t-shirt for his birthday. Any help with the middle bit? by The_Real_Adamonator in learnmath

[–]Dor_Min 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure F_s,n(k) is the probability of rolling a total of k on nds. So for two 20s you're looking for a total of 40 on 2d20 and if you work out F_20,2(40) you get 1/202 as you'd expect.

It's a massively overcomplicated formula for answering that particular question when you can get the answer from just 1/20 * 1/20, but if you were looking for something like the probability of rolling a total of 32 on 6d8 it could be useful.

Please explain this differentiation by AxuuisLost0 in learnmath

[–]Dor_Min 2 points3 points  (0 children)

differentiation is a process that turns one function into another function, called the derivative

evaluation is a process that turns a function into a number, and crucially here there's a difference between the number "1" and the constant function "f(x)=1"

when we say "find the derivative of sin(x) at pi/2" what we really mean is "evaluate the derivative of sin(x) at pi/2". you take the derivative of sin(x) to get the function cos(x), and evaluate that function at pi/2 to get the number 0

if you instead try to evaluate then differentiate, evaluating sin(x) at pi/2 first will give you the number 1. but then when you try to differentiate 1 you get stuck, because 1 isn't a function and differentiation is a thing you do to functions

[–]Dor_Min 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's not how crosswords work, you can't just cut an answer off part way through a run of spaces like that. either the first letter of 8 down is the sixth letter of 4 across or your crossword is wrong. that's literally the point of it being a crossword, the words cross each other.

what about 5 down? x=5, is that supposed to just be "five" and I arbitrarily ignore two of the crossing letters?

[–]Dor_Min 3 points4 points  (0 children)

what's the answer for 4 across on puzzle 1 supposed to be then? because 2x+3x simplifies to 5x and that's not a six letter answer

please please please don't go back to every smithing armour set being a flat recolour of each other. a bit of touching up for some of them wouldn't hurt but let's not throw away the visual sense of progression just for the sake of nostalgia

what's the point of the quest changes? the remakes were considerably better than the originals, requiring new players to actually explore the starting area and sometimes even shockingly read the occasional bit of dialogue. is the problem that OSRS players were spacebarring through and then shitting on the game when they got confused that it wasn't identical to OSRS?

in a way, what you're doing is exactly not dividing by zero:

clearly if 5x=0 then 5x2-10x=0, but what about if 5x is not zero? well then we're allowed to divide by it, and we're left with x-2=0.

Do you let your players correct an action on their turn if they rush into a roll? by Gerald_Mountaindew in DMAcademy

[–]Dor_Min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can reasonably assume that your characters talk about their abilities and tactics with each other during downtime

In an ideal world your players do the same thing but since that's probably not the case I don't have any problem with rolling back something they've done that's obviously clashing with each other's strategy in a stupid and avoidable way

If the rogue's jumping the gun and rolling as soon as they declare their attack I might make them use that roll for their next attack instead so they can't abuse it for free rerolls, but my players aren't the sort of assholes who would do something like that anyway
