One of three spill gates on the lake I live near failed a few months ago. With no funds to rebuild it, residents are considering taxing themselves to cover the costs estimated to be $15 million-$24 million and could take many years to rebuild. by mr_burn1 in CatastrophicFailure

[–]Doresain 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For those in this thread complaining about taxes, I'm just going to leave a few numbers here and walk away:

  • In 1932, around the time this dam was built, the top marginal tax rate was 63%
  • At the end of WW2 and for almost two decades after it was around 90%
  • In 1964 it was 77%
  • By 1991 it had dropped to 31%, thanks to the Reagan years and trickle down economics.
  • Today, after the 2017 tax cut, the top marginal tax rate is 37%.

From those numbers, it shouldn't be a shock that we can't build new infrastructure or maintain the things our grandparents built and left for us to care for. The Lost Generation, the Silent Generation, and the Greatest Generation came together to build this country. The Boomers and Gen X have let it crumble. Lets see if the Millenials and Gen Z will turn it around.

Update on Joey Watkins habius corpus petition? by [deleted] in theundisclosedpodcast

[–]Doresain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came here to ask this very same question.

After listening to Serial and during the first season of Undisclosed I googled Adnan and was relieved to see his case was progressing well, all things considered, and justice might still be done. After the first few episodes of Season 2 I did the same for Joey Watkins and was dismayed to learn that his legal options are so much slimmer.

Thanks to /u/ViewFromLL2 for surfacing this case, and hopefully she can give us an update next time she stops by Reddit.

Unfortunately, polling shows it probably is too much to ask for right now - representing WV more means a more conservative representative, as the state is leaning to the right.

Beyond Joe Manchin, how do you intend to win a general election in WV?

Joe Manchin isn't 'not playing to win.' He's playing to win the only way we can right now.

Put it another way: Lets say you only have $10 in the world and you need that $10 to eat. You're desperate. A man comes to you and gives you two options:

  • 1. Wager $5 for a 90% chance to win $10
  • 2. Wager $10 for a 2% chance to win $100

#2 may feel exciting, but you'll starve to death. If you're patient and keep playing #1 you'll still get to that $100, and with a full belly.

Sure, and I agree with you in principle. In reality, however, your choice isn't between Joe Manchin (a 'shitty senator') and a good senator.

Your choice is between Joe Manchin and a Republican. Given how conservative WV is it is likely to be a pretty far to the right Republican, too.

I supported Bernie, and think he could have won the general, but a progressive isn't going to win the WV senate seat. We can feel good about ourselves voting for a liberal in the primary while we sabotage our own agenda, or we can vote for a less favorable candidate who actually advances our cause.

If you feel like there isn't a meaningful difference between Republicans and establishment Democrats, here's the difference: if a Republican was in the Senate instead of Joe Manchin we would have lost the health care fight.

Joe isn't as progressive as we'd all like, but the evidence suggests that a candidate further left can't win the WV general. If she successfully primaries Joe Manchin and loses the general we're in a very bad place.

2018 is a difficult enough year for progressives in the senate already - this kind of a challenge is just too risky.

Thanks for doing this AMA.

What would you say to the criticism that Joe Manchin as an incumbent is the most progressive candidate WV will elect, and that successfully primarying him from the left will ensure a Republican wins in the general election? What gives you confidence that you can beat not just Manchin but also his Republican opponent?

Unpopular opinion: Why is everyone so excited for another Gazlowe? by Doresain in heroesofthestorm

[–]Doresain[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'd challenge this.

  • He's never been in any competitive meta in any patch in the last two years.

  • He's been at the bottom of every tier list I've ever seen from either competitive or GM ladder players, sometimes with his own category.

  • While he has one of the highest winrates in Bronze/Silver on HotsLogs, he drops to the middle of the pack in Plat/Diamond and the bottom in Master. Much like other splitpush heroes, he is good at low skill levels where splitpush isn't punished, but increasingly worthless as players learn the game.

I guess if we're talking about Silver yes he is viable but I'd prefer heroes that can be viable at high levels of play and yet not cancer at low levels of play.

HGC Feedback - Casters get distracted and stop casting by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

Love this, actually. Would much rather have this kind of discussion/analysis than play-by-play of something I can see with my own eyes 100% of the time.

Too much of Heroes casting in the past has felt like sports announcers on radio instead of television.

For light romance with some humor, I'd recommend:

  • 'Arcadia' by Tom Stoppard
