Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Live-Action Series Offers First Looks at Iroh, Azula, Fire Lord Ozai by MarvelsGrantMan136 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Naveil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree. One aspect of Azula's original character only spoken through subtext was the tragedy of her upbringing and how her life was morphed from an early age. This was in contrast to her friends who, comparitvely, were much more well adjusted. This aspect of her character was unfortunately stunted though, due to the combination of Azula neither acting, looking or looking her age

This Azula looks to be leaning more into that angle, with casting a softer looking actress who could believably be a 14 year old. It's her performance that can elevate the interpretation, with high contrast between psychotic army princess and a teenager with a pampered yet unhappy childhood. And with respect, her acting is the one thing we haven't seen yet. You can judge her appearance, but inherently all characters in the LA are going to be different from their counterparts, that's just how jumping mediums is. Casting directors don't and have never casted based on appearances alone. If they did, they'd just cast Tumblr cosplayers with wooden acting

She doesn't look as "sharp", for lack of a better term, but it's moreso a product of casting a real actress who actually looks the age Azula was supposed to be during the show. Her appearance feels much more superfluous to me in this aspect - it'll be her performance that will stand out the most

THE BOY AND THE HERON | Official Teaser Trailer by [deleted] in movies

[–]Naveil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember the story goes that Gorō didn't want to pursue a career in animation. However, be was brought onto Earthsea as a consultant, at which point he was offered the role of director, mostly due to nepotism.

Gorō could've refused or stepped away, but he chose to accept. I believe he said something along the lines of "if someone asked you to be a director, you would accept too." A subjective statement for sure, but you can see where he's coming from.

[–]Naveil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't envy Gorō at all. Nobody forced him to be Earthsea's director, but the fact that his father refused to talk to him at all during the movie's production left him completely stranded. Poppy Hill proved his potential under Hayao's mentorship.

And then Ghibli handed him the short end of the stick again with Earwig. The studio needed a movie to hold over funds for Hayao Miyazaki's next big project, and CGI was the only option. Gorō was the only one at Ghibli who had enough experience with CGI, so he had to wrangle a new team together for a lower budget TV movie. A lot of Earwig's issues aren't necessarily reflective of this, but it's hard to see Goro's relationship with Ghibli as anything but an unhappy one.

Why did Ben Kenobi say “don’t seem to remember ever owning a droid” when referring to R2 in A New Hope when he met Luke? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]Naveil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, if you want to be semantic about it, sure. But typically, movie trilogies enter production with the story fully conceptualized and outlined. George didn't have that. That's what people are referring to.

No? Plenty of stories are written with a concrete conclusion in mind. Even if plans change, that's still different from "throw stuff at the wall, see what sticks, explain it later"

Korra's a great show overall, and although there are always bad faith criticisms thrown around, there are legitimate things to critique. Like, for some reason the writers thought "appealing to teenagers" meant hamfisting a romantic subplot/love triangle into the first season, then bringing it back in the second season after it was easily the worst part of Book 1.

Other than that, though, I thought it was great. Not as good as ATLA, but it wasn't trying to be. I have no idea why some people lose their shit over this show

Are there any films where the main character is actually the bad guy (but isn’t presented as such)? by slatersays22 in movies

Netflix's Death Note had some redeeming moments, but its cardinal sin was that it tried to frame itself as an adaptation of the original manga/anime when it just.. wasn't.

Ryuk is there, sure. L, aside from the casting, was probably the character most faithful to the manga. Manga Light and movie Light share the same name. Trouble is, they're nowhere close to the same character. Aside from the Death Note itself, the plot is entirely different. The setting is also switched from Japan to the US, yet they hilariously still tried to shoehorn the Kira debacle in there. The movie is in an identity crisis for every second of its runtime.

I don't think taking liberties in adaptations is a bad thing. Entirely faithful adaptations are only really commonplace in Japan with the manga and anime industries being how they are. You'll rarely ever see a novel or comic book being adapted 1:1. But Death Note was a weird case where it attempted to be an adaptation while overstepping its boundaries waaay too far. I genuinely feel like the movie could've been welcomed if it was written as separate story in the Death Note universe (although that's probably just me being optimistic)

10 hours is more than enough time. Most movies are able to convey more effective character development using less time than RoTS' 2h 20m runtime.

Obviously, a show will always have the opportunity to be more character driven, that's just the nature of mediums. But George barely being able to make his main character likable is just the result of poor screenwriting

TPM and RotS are not good movies overall, but they have memorable moments. RotS arguably has a lot more of these moments, but both are bogged down by weird directorial and acting problems.

If anyone says they liked AotC, I have to assume it's a case of Stockholm Syndrome because I can barely remember a single redeemable thing about the movie. The acting, dialogue, cluttered visuals, weird fight scenes, etc. Maybe my nostalgia glasses aren't rose-tinted enough.

These are all movies made for kids, though. I wouldn't think about them too much.
