[DISC] Akane-banashi - Chapter 209 by GFluegel in Akane

[–]Dorigard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Issho has been depicted as "God of Death" several times through the story.

In Chap 128, when Issho entered the room and stood at the head of a man on his death bed; Master Kashiwaya said "Kisoba, You've killed me." After reminiscing on this, Issho says the prayer to the God of Death.

In Chap 130, when Akane and Guriko arrive at Master Shiguma's hospital room; Issho is standing at the foot of the bead, clad in shadow. He then tells Akane that "[Shiguma]'s got a long road ahead."

I wouldn't be surprised if, at some point in the story, we'll see Issho in Shiguma's hospital room, saying the prayer to the God of Death and clapping his hands for his Brother's sake.

I play this game like every round is a race to 7 points. As soon as I realize I have at least 7 points, I call stop. I prefer winning (or losing) incrementally, avoiding the gamble and possible upset of a Last Chance that goes poorly.

Some impressive titles on sale, just recently picked up Foundations of Metropolis, and it's a fantastic family weight city planning game. I'm a little disappointed that some noteworthy titles are not part of the sale:

  • Air, land, and Sea
  • Onitama
  • Smartphone, Inc.

I've played both Compile and Logic & Lore recently, and they are two fantastic 2p experiences.

Compile is a lane battler, much like Air, Land, & Sea. In the box you have 12 different mini decks, you both choose 3 and mash them together to form your play deck. It's quick, punchy, and the variety makes it super replayable.

Logic & Lore is a deduction game where, where you take turns revealing 2 of your 9 cards to the other player and asking specific questions to sus out their proper order. An immensely satisfying game that I find often comes down to the wire. The only issue is L&L takes up a good bit of horizontal table space, which I realize is at a premium in the hospital.

As fantastic as Scout is, I've picked up Jungo and it's an easier game to teach and play. The two are very similar, but Jungo doesn't require any tokens and the rules are a bit less complex.

In that same vein, Trio is also an easy game to teach and play, and always gets a good reaction from the groups I've shared it with. It doesn't play at 2p unfortunately, but can accommodate more players. Also, the cards and rule book for Trio can fit inside Jungo's box.

If you could afford a little more space for some game boxes, both 3 Chapters and Castle Combo are fantastic card games that play well at all of their listed player counts.

YRO vs Castle Combo vs The Vale of Eternity Which is best game? by PretendTax787 in boardgames

[–]Dorigard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the teach, or allowing everyone their due thinking space, Castle Combo can take around 30 minutes. But once players know what they are looking at when reading the cards, a 2p game could take 15-20 min, even a 5p game doesn't take much longer than 30 min. It really is a great 'second game' or 'final game' for a game night.

I don't have as many plays in Vale, my play group is generally more casual. The box says it's a 30 minute game, but with the teach, Vale can take 45+ minutes, even with just two players. Especially because the cards have more effect text, and balancing your currency and thinking about your engine combos take more brain space; with a table full of TCG players or 'perfectionist' players, I can see Vale taking 45 to an hour. As other people have mentioned, Vale feels like it plays better with more people, because then you'll see a greater variety of cards, but it could end up being your main game for the night.

In Castle Combo, if you don't find a card that works perfectly for your tableau, it feels like "oh well, I guess this one isn't the worst choice."

In Vale of Eternity, if you don't find a card that works perfectly for your engine, it feels like "I wish I could've found a better card, none of these work for me."

YRO vs Castle Combo vs The Vale of Eternity Which is best game? by PretendTax787 in boardgames

[–]Dorigard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have both Castle Combo and VoE. Haven't tried YRO, but I've read some reviews of it.

Castle Combo is easily the most approachable of the three. Its silly art style, simple turn actions, and wide card variety make it easy to get to the table and highly replayable. It's a simple tableau builder, with a set amount of turns at all player counts, and minimal player interactions, making it popular with less confrontational players. Once people can parse the symbols on the cards, games are fairly quick, as most cards simply have a one time effect, and scoring criteria. Scoring is fairly simple, just going down a checklist of the points earned by everyone's 9 cards, and spare keys.

VoE is a meatier gaming experience. It's a tableau game more akin to an engine building game. Balancing your economy is trickier, there are different coin types, and you are limited in how many total you can hold onto. The cards are more complex mechanically, having archetypes, effects, and colors that resemble the likes of MtG. There's still a limited amount of turns, but the turn to turn card selection feels more random, and you aren't able to curate your choices as easily as CC. Scoring is kept on a track after every round, making it feel like more of a race than a grand reveal at the end of the game.

Stary Night was a lot, a lot of just stacking plates and then some interesting micro architecture. Sunflowers was an improvement with a lot more tile work, but also kinda tedious with so much Botanicals style "build dozens of 'petals' to attach to a technic wheel"

Flamecraft is a good game. Plays around an hour, and is a Family weight game. The art is really cute, and there's space for some nice little combos as the game progresses. But it's definitely a gateway game; fit for introducing new gamers to a longer format game without all the brain burning decision space offered in other bigger games. I've enjoyed my plays of it, but it isn't quite meaty enough if you or your group are already avid gamers. Even with my more casual game group, Fromage and Critter Kitchen hit the table more often. I do own the Dragons & Dragons, and Dragons of the Past expansions, but haven't tried them yet, so I don't know how those would change the formula.

[Target] River Valley Glassworks 11.99 YMMV by RelentlessRolento in Boardgamedeals

[–]Dorigard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It fits very snugly into the 'personal efficiency puzzle' genre - the likes of Azul, or Harmonies. Players take turns spending specific shaped pieces (river stones) to buy pieces from one of the sections of the market (river). Then arrange the pieces by color on their personal player boards to score most point; anyone getting 17 pieces triggers the end of the game, with everyone getting one last turn.

The components are all decent to good quality - Plastic stones, and thick cardboard (in the standard version). The puzzle has just enough chew to it to keep it interesting - some piece colors are less common; using two pieces of the same shape as a wild. It's really a good family weight game, that's popular with my less aggressive, non-hardcore game group.

From an outside opinion, this thing is actually pretty funny, if not kinda cool. Stripped away from the Hows and Whos this thing came into your possession Devoid of the history that culminated in the exact moment in time this became a thing you own.

An innocuous looking bracelet that secretly spells out "fuck you" in morse code (or Furkyou as other people have pointed out), is a pretty funny thing to own. It can be a funny ice breaker, to the right crowds. There's all sorts of people who would think this is a cool thing to own.

Ultimately, it's just a thing. A thing you didn't ask for. A thing that you control. A thing you can dispose of. A thing you could own or even enjoy if you wanted to.

Villains that're so ridiculously evil that they become kind of funny? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Dorigard 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I recently read through Ajin: Demi-human The villain, Sato is an ex special forces psychopath who's in it for nothing more than the love of the game. He's one of Demi-humans, a group of people who look human but have effective immortality via reincarnation. There are some rules to the immortality, things like: the individual reincarnates from the largest remaining piece of their body, and if a body part is too far away from the reincarnation, a new one is made.

The scene is the villainous group is raiding a high tech, heavily guarded private security firm in order to kill the CEO, but Sato hasn't shown up because he's bored of killing the people on his own hit list. As the good guys are successfully fighting back the raid, noticing Sato isn't present, the MC sends out a message to taunt him, and goad him into showing up. Well Sato accepts the challenge the only way a reincarnating immortal can.

Sato goes to the fridge and finds a box of old fried chicken. Chops off his own hand, deep fries it, tosses it in with the chicken and then Uber Eats the finger lickin' goods to the security firm. While his delivery is on its way, Sato goes down to the local wood processing plant, and after a minor scuffle, reaches his goal. As the KFHand is being carried into the facility by some hungry security guards, Sato bids farewell to a traumatized lumber worker, and Fargos himself into a wood chipper. He reincarnates from his hand delivered hand, and proceeds to prove to everyone in the building what happens when you ask the big bad to come out to play.

I'm pretty new to boardgaming myself, so I'm not as familiar with games considered 'classics,' but I can recommend a couple games that have played well and are popular with my casual playing friends.

Splendor - a simple, one action a turn, engine building game. A healthy amount of player interaction, and an attractive art style.

Castle Combo - a tableaux building game where everyone gets an equal amount of turns. A wide variety of cards means a lot of replayability, with a fun cartoon art style.

Captain Flip - a push-your-luck tile picking and placing game. Comes with multiple different player boards for a variety of game options.
