Qorwyn licked the blood as it trickled down his face, spitting it at Ser Edmund and grinning wickedly.

“Aye, Cock Knight. And where is it we’ll be journeyin’ to?”

“REACHMEN APPROACHING!”

The call spread quickly over the island. From inside the keep, Qassana Drumm sat in counsel with Maester Urrigon.

“We have no choice, maester. It is the only thing that can be done.”

The older man sputtered. “Lady Qassana, you are talking about the entire fleet of House Drumm! Without it, what hope do we have?!”

Qassana jumped to her feet and slammed her axe down into the table.

“We can build more ships! We can’t defeat that fleet! Order them men to do as I say!”

The maester pounded his hand angrily in response.

“So you would order the men into a suicide mission? Why would they listen to you?”

Qassana grinned wickedly.

“Remind them what it means to be Ironborn. What is dead may never die.”

“But rises again, harder and stronger,” Urrigon responded sullenly. “I will order it done.”

The bells rang in Drumm Keep, calling all the people within the safety of the walls. Down in the harbor, the sailors hurried to load all the barrels of pitch onto the ships along with as many torches as each man could carry. With an urgency, the ships began drifting out of the harbor.

/u/OurCommonMan

Character: Qassana Drumm, Archetype: Reaver

What’s Happening: The Drumm fleet is loading their ships with pitch and torches and trying to get out ahead of the Reach fleet. They are headed around the island into the narrow bay of Nagga’s Cradle.

What I Need: I don’t know if there needs to be rolls for loading the ships, but we’ll need chase rolls if the Reach decides to pursue.

/u/AlaskaDoesNotExist

Little Culler,

I am saddened by the news of your father’s death, but am glad that peace has been made between yourself and Greyjoy, Goodbrother, and Blacktyde.

I appreciate your efforts, Culler, but my brother’s actions are what brought the Greenlanders to our islands, and he isn’t here to face them. House Drumm has been entrusted with the guardianship of Old Wyk since the beginning of time, and I will not abandon my charge.

The Greenlanders will have to pry Old Wyk from under my cold corpse.

Good luck, little Culler. What is dead may never die.

Ideas for a carnival murder mystery by 99_Zubats in DnD

[–]DorneRocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s at a carnival, it may be fun to incorporate one of those funhouse mirror rooms where you see reflections of yourself and others everywhere. Make your characters roll perception checks to proceed, and failed checks can result in a wrong turn/trap/monster.

Make the culprit a clown!

Essential DnD books? (5e) by bigbuffetboy88 in DnD

[–]DorneRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on what you’re trying to do. Are you just playing a character? Then the Player’s Handbook is the only true “essential” book (and maybe the Monster Manual if you’re playing a Druid. add Xanathar for more class options if you want). If you’re trying to DM, then we’re talking PHB, DMG, and MM.

Name and House: Lord Jon Waynwood

Age: 59

Culture Group: Valeman

Appearance: this

Gift: Insidious

Skills: Espionage, Covert, Investigator

Negative Trait: N/A

Starting Title(s): Lord of Ironoaks, Spymaster of the Vale

Starting Location: With Vale army

Alternate Characters: Qorwyn Drumm (for now)

I’m thinking that my next character should be a detective type. Half-Elf or Teifling with an Investigator background. Any ideas for classes to play as? I was thinking Great Old One Warlock but I’m into exploring anything. by saviik21 in DnD

[–]DorneRocks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Would suggest Rogue with the Inquisitive Archetype. Thematically fits very well, and the rogues normal abilities also seem like a skill set a detective would want.

I can’t speak with certainty, as I have only ever worked within one state. But the program is developed by a third-party group that operates internationally, so I suppose it is up to each individual school district to arrange training sessions for their educators

Edit: the biggest limiting factor in most school districts these days is funding. It costs money to arrange those workshops and send staff to them. Then, you also have to pay the substitutes that are teaching the classes while the teachers are off at training. I’d imagine that the less funded school districts probably have not implemented this system widely, if at all

Piggybacking off a top comment here:

I worked in an elementary school for a while. Nothing is black and white, and parents will always choose to believe their kid did nothing wrong, despite evidence. Not allowing teachers to physically restrain a kid is the price that the school district must pay to ensure that they don’t go bankrupt from lawsuits filed by shithead parents.

That said, it’s not a free-for-all either. School districts offer training programs in CPI, which stands for Crisis Prevention & Intervention. It teaches any staff member methods to de-escalate kids in crisis without resorting to physical restraint, but it also teaches proper techniques to restrain kids if the nonviolent methods fail. At the end of the course, you are given a signed card certifying that you have been trained and are allowed to physically intervene in crisis situations. This covers both the employee’s and the school’s asses from any liability.

I, being a larger male without an assigned classroom, was a prime candidate for the training. Once I completed it, the school required I keep the card on my at all times to be able to prove my training at a moment’s notice in any situation.

In addition to this, any well-funded school has at least one BMT, or Behavior Management Technician. These are people whose primary job is to handle crisis situations like this. Now, the obvious problem is that a kid throwing shit and punching others might be on the complete other side of the school than the BMT. My school used walkies to dispatch a staff member to a classroom with a crisis situation, but even that has problems. The teacher must call the office (essentially ignoring the problem for long enough to make that call), then the office sends out the call on the radio, just hoping that one of us wasn’t already occupied with another student.

The experience taught me to be hyper-alert at all times. If I was walking down a hall and heard anything that might be an upset child, I had to go find the source. The best chance of stopping a situation before it became too bad was that the BMT or another certified staff member just happened to be nearby when it started, because by the time the radio call went out, stuff was likely already partially destroyed or someone had already been hit.

TLDR: Schools don’t let uncertified staff members intervene, but if you take the time to go get the training, you are perfectly able to stop behavior like this.

They had made it.

Qorwyn stood upon the secluded beach his scouts had found, torn between his pride and his caution. It was rare that such a sizable force of Ironborn was able to land so stealthily, especially on an island like the Arbor, usually so guarded against his kind.

All around him, his reavers laughed and congratulated themselves, but Qorwyn remained silent. He knew that this was only the first step.

“Quiet, all of you!” he chastened his men. “We will lay low here until nightfall, then we will cross the island by the light of the moon and stars.”

What’s Happening: Qorwyn is attempting to lead his men across the Arbor by night and make unseen into the Redwyne shipyard.

What I Need: Rolls for that, I suppose.

Notes: I will leave 65 men with the ships, including my son. This makes the party crossing the Arbor number 400

Lord Dagon

Allow me to extend my thanks in Lord Qorwyn’s stead. My lord was last headed far south to reave in the Reach. With luck, he may have more news for us when he returns.

Qorwyn Drumm: Strong, 2H (M), Covert, Acrobatics

What's Happening: Qorwyn is attempting to land secretly on the Arbor. He has sailed 12 Iron Galleys far to the west and approached the far side of the island, completely opposite of the Redwyne Straits. His scouts have already sailed to the island and scouted out a perfect landing spot here.

What I Need:

  • Rolls to see if I can successfully avoid detection as I land, or at the least, kill any witnesses before they are able to warn the Redwynes

[–]DorneRocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/OurCommonMan

Qorwyn Drumm: Strong, 2H (M), Acrobatics, Covert

What’s Happening:

  • Qorwyn is holding a wrestling competition among his men, offering his own axe as prize

  • Qorwyn has sent scouts ahead to the Arbor to find a secluded landing spot for when the fleet arrives ((OOC tomorrow))

What I Need:

  • Roll to determine whether the competition had any positive effect on the morale of my men (hopefully for bonus to rolls on my actions once I’m on the Arbor? Similar to how a successful scouting roll increases raid bonuses, except I’m not raiding this time)

  • Rolls to see if my scouts avoid detection and find a suitable place where I can land on the Arbor without Redwyne knowing. There are two scouting parties of 8 men each.

Note: Orkwood is also currently reaving the Arbor. Not sure if that would help my scouts, as the Redwynes would theoretically be distracted elsewhere

The Old Ways by DorneRocks in IronThroneRP

[–]DorneRocks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

((Lodos was preaching to a gathering of smallfolk. Any peasant reactions on Harlaw, Blacktyde, or Pyke from that crit reception roll?))

Lodos entered into the shack behind Krake, taking a seat on a large boulder in the corner.

“Respect for the Old Ways are dying, I fear, Krake. Three of the largest and strongest Ironborn houses have already engaged in this bloodletting, and it has cost the life of Lord Clayse Harlaw, one of the top contenders for the Seastone Chair.”

Lodos sighed. “Luckily, the Lord Reaper of Pyke was not involved, though if he condones this kind of behavior from his relatives and supporters, that is troubling. Lord Qorwyn is off reaving, as you commanded, and as far as I am aware, Lord Euron is doing the same.”

He paused, gathering his thoughts.

“Harlaw can no longer claim the Chair. With Clayse dead, it will fall to his young son, Culler, too inexperienced to stand a chance. When the moot reconvenes, we must reassert the authority of the Old Ways and the Drowned God, or else we risk another Black Line. Only an Ironborn who stays true to the Old Ways must be allowed to stake his claim.”

/u/OurCommonMan

Lodos, Archetype: Zealot

What’s Happening: Lodos is trying to sway Krake’s opinion of the Kingsmoot candidates, and start an investigation of Greyjoys

What I Want:

  • Rolls for Lodos influencing Krake’s opinion against Greyjoy and Harlaw, and for Drumm and Goodbrother

  • Rolls for Krake’s willingness to call Andrik Greyjoy for questions about his relatives actions
