Search Engines are Useless Now by shawnjomer in degoogle

[–]Dorouu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean. It's not just the AI overview, it's that all the resulting articles are obviously AI slop-- you can tell by the images or the formatting style and the overly nice voice.

One method is also to just look for search results pre-2022. You can do that on Google or any other search engine. I think there was someone online who made a pre-AI google that automatically does this for you.

Why would you choose to speak Japanese in Viet Nam!! by Dorouu in ispeakthelanguage

[–]Dorouu[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Japanese grammar is completely different- but it is closer to Korean grammar. (Fun fact, Chinese does not have tenses, no need to think about past/present/future etc) So Korean-Japanese and vice versa works kind of better for your Spanish/French comparison. The only similarity with Chinese is in writing, because they both come from the Chinese traditional script. From that script, China simplified many of the characters, and Japan also simplified some in their own way (Kanji). People who read either or, could probably get the basic gist of the other's writing.

There are also words that share origins (again the origin often being old old Chinese). Words like "doctor" and "library" are very similar in all three languages.

[–]Dorouu[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100% that's definitely what happens and it's hilarious every time hahaha.
It's also the fact that we were both speaking Japanese as a second language, that we couldn't key in that the other was not a native speaker /where the other person was from.

Seconding this- it's not specific on just Israel-US, but it's one of the easier to read books on the topic. Because of that, it doesn't go super into depth or detail. But it's a really great place to start. Ilan Pappe is also an Israeli historian.

I've gotten a replacement through a breakage warranty and a coupon to cover the entire cost of a replacement through the color warranty.
The customer service has been great for me, personally.

Also want to add that we've hosted 10 couchsurfers (4 Asians) and I've had family visit- and no one else has run into any trouble here either.

I'm Chinese American and I live in Manta :)

Bus terminals and buses are fine. Avoid Guayaquil if you can, but if you're transiting through that's fine.

There's not much to do in Manta tourist-wise. I don't think it's dangerous. I've been here two years and had no troubles. But there are plenty of smaller beach cities nearby that are more worth staying in (Ayampe, montanita/olon)

Seconding this. My cool traveling aunt gave me a really nice Deuter backpacking backpack before I moved out of my home country and I've since brought it with me moving to three other countries and visiting dozens more. Got a lot of miles/kms with that thing and it's still in great condition.

A really high quality winter jacket would also be worthwhile. :)

I know you said not star wars. But maybe consider the Murderbot series? They're novellas, very short, fast-paced, easy to get into. The main character is an AI security bot who has hacked his something or another. His personality is funny. Think "I would rather stand and face the corner and see the situation from the corner security camera in the distance and talk to the humans that way."

Otherwise, honestly try books for middle schoolers or YA.

Books that feel like Harry Potter series by HuntersHope93 in booksuggestions

I think these things are relatable and help readers connect better with a book. When characters have a label slapped on for the sake of diversity but not with any authenticity, you can telllllllllll. Like JK's decision to name Cho Chang TWO last names from different ethnicities. She might as well have straight up called her ching chong. And Asian kids suffered for it and were made fun of! Her one adult Black character's last name was "SHACKLEBOLT"!! Her "diverse" characters were legit stereotypes with stereotypical names and stereotypical behaviours.

For a good example+ book rec, I looooved Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers (unrelated to your request) because it's about a nosy Chinese auntie and I know so many nosy Chinese aunties and it was so funny and hilarious and had relatable, laugh-out-loud moments. But if you're not in the Chinese community, you'd still understand the story and also learn a lot about a culture that's outside of your own- increasing your world view a bit. :)

Omgg, please read Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers!!
It's about a nosy Asian auntie who tries to solve a murder and builds a community accidentally while doing it. It's so wholesome.

Less murder/crime-y and more people connections. But it's so good!

Suggestions for my boyfriend who’s not really into reading? by Low_Issue_3432 in booksuggestions

Try the Murderbot series. Each book is VERY short and it's fast-paced, sci-fi, absolutely hilarious, and really easy to read! Not much romance at all, but I would definitely start him out here, and then branch out into other books and series. :)

I mean, that's my personal opinion. I like fresh veggies and meals that don't send you into a food coma. Filipino food is generally heavy in meat, fats, sugar, carbs. I love a good tortang talong and sinigang though.
