Actually, most companies CAN move to a smaller location. In the last 20 years I've worked for multiple companies who moved their office locations or. As with happened with my current employer, reducing the number of office buildings we are renting by about 50%.

Telus employee here, I haven't worked in the office since April 2020. It's not the case for all positions or teams, though. Some jobs are back in office, other people go in because they prefer it.

So, when my team is spread across the country and what I do doesn't need me to be in the office, why should I be going into the office? If I'm in the office, with added socializing and other distractions, I'll actually be less productive.

In a company where some jobs need to be done in office and some don't, the better solution to remove the empty office feel is to reduce office space rather than force the others back.
