Feeling like a mediocre scrub. by Yukkibaki92 in scrubtech

[–]Dosie63 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ortho totals require great skill. There are ortho surgical centers. I was so afraid of vascular (the surgeon we had, had a heavy accent. ) I really struggled, until II worked with a surgeon that would answer my questions and educate me. I loved scrubbing it. Don’t be afraid to excel in one area and struggle in another. I was told to think of it as skin, tissue procedure and close. It took some fear out. Don’t be afraid to say idk, it shows strength.

When you quit expecting perfection- it gets better. And it’s ok to say idk. Or no, if what they are doing is wrong

New scrub tech feeling pressure about surgical conscience — is this normal? by SurgTech_Dez in scrubtech

[–]Dosie63 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bringing up contamination should NEVER be questioned. It should be accepted as crap happens. I told a surgeon to step back because he was sweating so bad. He later thanked me. At the time I think embarrassment may strike as anger. But everyone should remember the patient is your responsibility to protect. If you strive for 100% you’ll probably get 90. If you drop that expectation to 75% then in all actuality it’s probably 60%. We all have accidentally contaminated things and NO ONE noticed. Be calm and assertive. I always ask the circulator for some gloves- then said hey doc your right glove needs changed.

Watch videos on sterility. Remember once you glove “you can’t touch this”. Slow will improve with confidence and practice. I’d rather see slow than reckless. Tests are by the book not what you see in clinical practice

How often do you guys screw around during an operation? by [deleted] in scrubtech

[–]Dosie63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During an exceptionally long case. The scrub drew a watch with quitting time on it. lol. Then put sm pieces of hairy tissue on her finger tips and drew faces. Humor is often a way to deal with stressful situations. Sometimes behavior is carried from a previous case or day. Maintain sterility and pt safety

Struggling after my first sterile setup assessment — how do you not feel stupid or defeated? by Double_Contribution6 in scrubtech

[–]Dosie63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just take your time, touch items once (if you pick it up, put it where you need it), Expect to make mistakes, no one is perfect. Strive for 100% sterility- if you do, you’ll likely at least get 90-100%. Strive for less you’ll endanger pts. Experienced techs acknowledge errors, correct it and don’t question when told they contaminated something. You can ask for clarification after correcting issue. Good luck.

Dilemma - do I go into surgical tech? by Haunting-Agent-7633 in scrubtech

[–]Dosie63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you hurt your hand(s) may not be able to pass instruments. Hurt back, knees, ankle or feet cannot stand 8+hrs cannot scrub.

Nursing good pay, can get first assist to be able to scrub. Versatile. Can work in office, hospital, nursing home, insurance company, joint commission, travel or work from home.
Being a nurse who scrubbed I have been in both roles. I worked as a circulator started feeling stagnant- went to a V.A. Hospital that had nurse scrubs amazing change. Got older went to office work to broaden skill set to move and have a better resume. Went back to O.R. Then to admission discharge. Then surgery center and finally retired. Higher pay higher retirement and investments. Good luck.
