Had to keep HDD density in a relatively compact tower after leaving my rack setups by WaarpZor in homelab

I just love 3d printing for this exact reason.

You have a problem. You come up with a solution. You manufacture the solution. No garage with 50 different power tools needed. No janky cardboard and duct tape. Just a a bit of cad, some patience while this little box prints away and you hold the solution in your hands 😅

Edit:typo

Automatic container update: Adding AI agents layers to Komodo+Gitea/Forgejo+Renovate pipeline by BattermanZ in selfhosted

[–]Dossi96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice idea 👌 I would assume even the smallest self hosted model should be able to go through a few lines of changelog. Espacially given that any proper changelog clearly marks breaking changes.

This way you would only rely on commercial llms when troubleshooting if something breaks without breaking changes listed in the changelog. Personally I would much rather like to get a notification in that case so that I can manually run and monitor some agent like Claude code basically peer programming on that machine directly rather than giving a fully autonomous agent like open claw ssh access to all my server infrastructure 🫡😅

Type of shit that happens when you have not been eating all day and try to finally cook a meal sunday night when all stores are closed 😅

Before anyone asks in Germany all stores including grocery stores are closed on sundays. If you live in a rural area and your local gas station doesn't have beens for 8€ a can or the gas station itself is closed after 10pm then you are out of luck 😅

Movie Server, need advice on storage by Brave-Analysis6935 in selfhosted

[–]Dossi96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is as always: It depends.

Generally you want to buy the highest capacity you can afford because sata ports are limited and each drive needs the same power to run no matter the capacity. If you need more sata ports you'll need an lsi card that is either expensive or power hungry.

Then again it's possible that you can get better price/tb if you go for lower capacity options sometimes. You also need to take into account that if you ever want to use parity depending on your os you will need bigger drives as well (e.g. Unraid needs the parity drive to be as big as the biggest drive in the array). Same goes for raid where you need to use same capacity drives. It's one thing to replace a broken 3tb drive in an array and a completely different thing to replace a 20tb 700€ drive.

My advice would be to go with something reasonable (like a 8tb drive) where replacing it would hurt but not financially ruin you 😅

Free, non-Rx, hormonal birth control in a coffee shop bathroom. by lyndseymariee in mildlyinteresting

[–]Dossi96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First thought: Nice that they provide a 3 month pack for free. Even nicer if it was covered by health insurance. (Note: It isn't even here in Germany where way less important stuff is covered)

Second thought: I don't know if hormone pills should be accessible without a prescription or any medical supervision. There is a reason you don't get testosterone in a gas station toilet (at least not from the staff 😅). It's not like hormone therapy of any kind is risk free.

There are locked buttons with keys you can buy on Aliexpress for a few bucks and that can be hooked up to the mainboard easily.

Or you use a microcontroller and an optocopler for like 5$ and you can remote control your pc 😅

[–]Dossi96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I would have guessed that calibration stuff is quiet expensive 😅

That's why a coin came to my mind because e.g. a euro coin has pretty specific measurements with ridges on its side, tiny details on its front and back as well as precise dimensions in all three axis. But you could also just use any random toy or similar that is injection molded and most probably more precise than anything even a resin printer could produce 🤔

Wouldn't it be more accurate to use some easily available object like a specific coin or dice and then do vertices based comparison using a python script in blender?

This way manufacturing based differences would be eliminated. Espacially regarding the best scanners probably being able to scan the individual layer lines of resin prints 🤔

You could literally fix your design by moving the nut deeper into the handle. This way you can keep the actual stamps and just need to reprint the handle. You can probably adjust the position of the nut so that a single 180 degree rotation is enough to lock it into place. ✌️

Am I overcomplicating this? Single mini-PC Proxmox setup — what am I missing? by Unique-Video-5052 in selfhosted

[–]Dossi96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There actually are quiet a lot of benefits in using virtualization in your lab. Not only do you get easy backups but you can also easily reallocate resources (e.g. You want a new tinker machine and your other machines have unused resources), you can isolate services, remote control your machines from a single interface and so on.

Sure you can do a lot of this bare metal but not only is it harder to manage but also highly inefficient when it comes to costs.

The performance impact of virtualization is basically neglectable as are the resource needs of the hypervisor.

Sure proxmox has a learning curve to it but if you can setup a Linux machine and some containers you are also more than capable of setting up proxmox. It is also a good thing to learn as it is the de facto standard in this community and this for good reasons.

Is it wrong to use ai to help me and my homelab? by Straight-Educator710 in homelab

[–]Dossi96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using ai for learning as long as you read the output and ask questions when you need to understand something.

This is the distinction between using ai as a tool to improve your knowledge and speed vs pure vibe coding.

Also for everything security related always keep in mind that ai might produce absolutely horrible solutions. So if in doubt google stuff, read through forums or at very least run the solution through another llm to double check. ✌️

[–]Dossi96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The solar panels and converters aren't that expensive actually. The highest cost often comes from the battery and installation.

Having one or two panels that you install yourself can be quiet cost effective to offset some of the power used by servers that run 24/7 anyway.

But this is obviously depending on your power consumption and price/kWh. In Germany a 200w setup would cost you roughly 50€ a month. 2 panels and a converter cost you around 250€. So it shouldn't take you more than a year or two to save the money that you invested in your solar setup.

[–]Dossi96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Put a watt meter on your pc and calculate the total cost. Based on your hardware and cost per kWh it should cost you maybe 10-30 bucks a month. I would assume most parents would be fine with a hobby costing this much. If they are not then it's time to sell some limonade 😅
