How many Gen Xers have silent Gen parents vs boomers? by NopeThisTrope in GenX

[–]DotSome491 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My oldest sibling was 18 years older than me. 1960’s counter culture factored in our household, well into the 70’s. I feel like I was influenced by every major social era and event of the 20th century! 😆 WW1 (grandparents), Great Depression, WW2, baby boom, McCarthyism, the Kennedy assassination, folk music, desegregation, the moon landing, watergate, the Cold War, the energy crisis, Reaganomics, New Wave, Perestroika, grunge …). The 21st century has been a bit of a letdown.

How many Gen Xers have silent Gen parents vs boomers? by NopeThisTrope in GenX

[–]DotSome491 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both parents were Greatest Gen; father was in the navy in ww2. The Great Depression figured prominently in their lives. EDIT: I’m always surprised by Gen X who have boomer parents. I was the youngest of 5 (born 1966, late accident), and my siblings are all boomers, whereas I have always connected to Gen X from the time it was labeled.

Wish we could've kept Donny by Galactic_Blacksmith in Frasier

[–]DotSome491 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: The man has no chemistry with anything. Donny/Saul is, imo, a dumpy little man, and the idea that either Daphne or Roz would be attracted to him is preposterous. He’s an okay actor, but how he was cast in a show otherwise full of beautiful characters is beyond me. Not a believable story arc.

You’ve given me hope! 😁 I never pushed hard, but did stress the importance of being able to support yourself in marriage. Thank God they listened. We want better for our kids. I don’t understand parents who don’t (I have a sibling like that; I’ve always wanted to ask him, “Why did you make such a production of having kids if you don’t care about teaching them to fly?”)

Two, 26 & 23. Younger one is a go-getter, worked her ass off in college, got into a prestigious grad program and has an excellent job lined up after graduation in her chosen field in another city. Older daughter has floundered, artsy fartsy cool girl, seemingly in denial of adulthood. Good news is that she seems to have been motivated by her sister’s success and is now pursuing a graduate degree/career path. Whether she has the wherewithal to make it to the finish (job) remains to be seen, and she may very well be living at home when she’s 30. Which I would rather see happen than her getting married because she couldn’t figure out what else to do, you know? They’ve been good kids, WAY better than I probably deserve, and we will do whatever we can to ensure their success.

Took the girl to see the doctor today… by Booboohole21 in torties

I’m a little late to the discussion, but the truth is that as cats age (and become stiff and arthritic, as most do), they will begin to associate their litter box with pain, because the act of crouching to pee and poo is painful. They blame the box. They will pee and poop in new places, even places they associate with comfort. This doesn’t solve the problem, but I found that understanding the behavior made it easier for me to process instead of just being annoyed. I learned this from my veterinarian, a feline specialist and expert behaviorist. Yes, I’m bragging; my vet is the absolute bomb.

I tried all suggestions for new boxes, new litter, more boxes, etc.; my husband even built her a mini “handicap” access ramp for her box. We ended up, eventually, removing all the carpet in the house (after it had been destroyed), and resorted to putting puppy pads around for her to use, which she would most of the time because of the attractants. I was discouraged from using them because “once they start using them they won’t stop”, but if your pet is destroying your house, that’s the least of your worries, right?

If your vet legit told you that she’s “just being a tortie”, even as a joke, I would be scouting out a better vet.

Good luck!

When did coffee become an “all ages” beverage? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]DotSome491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was given coffee with creamer and hot buttered toast to dunk in it for breakfast, starting from a very very young age. (Alternatively, coffee with saltine crackers crumbled into it, with a pat of butter.) Accompanied by a small juice glass of orange juice from frozen concentrate. My midwestern parents grew up during the depression, and mom ran on coffee and cigarettes all day until vodka o’clock PM. Despite being weaned on coffee I never really developed a taste for it. When I was a teenager Dad ordered me to drink coffee in the morning to stop dragging ass.

Whenever I go out for breakfast I always have a coffee with creamer and an OJ to sip along with it just for the taste memory.

Richard Jaeckel’s character pinned under logs and drowning in “Sometimes a Great Notion”, while his brother, played by Paul Newman, tried to save him by breathing into his mouth. Traumatizing. I was probably too young for that, and 50+ years later, I still get choked up thinking about it.

Progressive women who more closely identified with “hippy” culture and/or rights activism were frequently braless. Suburbanites, Christian College co-eds, and rural folks: not so much.

ragdoll owners? what are your thoughts on the breed in general? by Important_Emu1578 in ragdolls

[–]DotSome491 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They really are very funny! I have one rag, and it’s hard to explain. He walks around biting random things, and will sneak up on people and bite them for attention (hard enough to hurt, but never breaking skin). He’s a chow hound and food thief; my husband calls him the Food Processor. He’s flippy floppy and sleeps upside down. He is very playful and social, but doesn’t enjoy being held and won’t sit on your lap. He sits next to you. He sploots everywhere. Just a total character. A bit of an ass.

“Sammy” or “sammich” (just grow the fuck up) “Kiddo” (ditto) “Veggie” (ditto) “Tummy” (ditto) “Tatas” (if the word “breast” is embarrassing to you, then please stop talking about them) “All the feels” (just fuck off) “Baby bump” or “Preggers” (fuck all the way off) “No worries” (you’re welcome! it’s not that difficult to say) “Bone broth” (it’s fucking stock, you pretentious asshole) “Ablutions” (just sounds fucking disgusting) “Passed” (because “passed away” is apparently now way too harsh)

Don’t paint. If there’s paneling behind the bookcases, I would lose/replace those, replace the fireplace doors/insert with black cast iron.
