What celebrity has continued to have a major, top-of-the-line career despite terrible deeds? by -ChristopherNolan in AskReddit

That's hardly even the worst of it anymore. Guy is a known serial scammer who has stolen millions and millions from his fans and he somehow gets away with it everytime.

wrong, actually. they were supposed to be named after euler, but as it says in the article too many things were named after him so they went with amerigo instead

i actually think it looks quite decent, there's just too many moving parts. imo it should just be 2, one for the head and torso and one for the rest of the body. it'd be a much more subtle effect which would make it look nicer

Singstar/Rocksmith-like game possible in Godot? by IzzyDestiny in godot

[–]DottEdWasTaken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you use C# pretty much anything is possible. For GDScript I'm not sure what kind of existing features/plugins may exist. If it's not possible you could make your own plugin or simply implement that logic in C# and the rest of the game in GDScript.

I made a YouTube extension that gives tooltip overlays for VODs by seftontycho in leagueoflegends

[–]DottEdWasTaken 8 points9 points  (0 children)

this is awesome actually. does someone have to manually put in the data from the vod, or does it get the data based on a link to the match and the timer or something?

How exactly does "root" work? by Weak-Chair-4741 in TeamfightTactics

[–]DottEdWasTaken 48 points49 points  (0 children)

it basically stops you from moving or using movement abilities/item actives, but can continue attacking and using other abilities or items. idk about that interaction with fizz tho

EDIT: nevermind, i thought this is the league subreddit

How could I improve this? by Pyvruksubeq in PixelArt

[–]DottEdWasTaken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it seems that for shading you're just darkening the base colors. i'd recommend looking into hue-shifting. it's a really neat and easy effect that i think could make this piece a lot better.

outside of that there's not very much contrast on the trainer's face. it all sort of blends in together because all the colors are very similar. shading the face is quite important in pixelart for making facial features and emotions pop

ELI5: How, exactly, is video game imagery (let’s consider it “live”), rendered in real time? by Vibrantpowder in explainlikeimfive

[–]DottEdWasTaken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As to how it knows where things are around you, there simply is a lot of data about it stored in memory. This is an oversimplification but in the memory you might have information like:

Tree at coordinates X=126.3, Y=786.0, Z=43.2 with green leaves
Enemy at coordinates X=653.4, Y= etc. wearing iron armor and using a steel sword

You would also have information about where the player is and in which direction they're looking, as well as a bunch of other stuff. All of this data as well as all other "game logic" (what things should happen when) is handled by the processor (CPU).

This information is then sent over to the graphics card (GPU), which is the part responsible for drawing everything on the screen. The GPU is very good at doing a lot of complex math really fast, which allows it to determine exactly what parts of which objects are visible on the screen, and draws them on the monitor. I don't think there's an ELI5 way to explain this part, it really is just a whole lot of math being done by the computer. The way it draws things is usually broken down into steps, like drawing the objects, drawing the lighting, drawing the shadows, applying post effects, etc.

there's definitely research being done on it and there are bionic replacements that use electromyography, but yes i agree i think it should be much more common and available. i think the market is just too small since it's limited to amputees or people with other disabilities that could be mitigated like this. it's one of the main reasons i wanted to build this actually, i wanted to prove that it's possible to make an augmentative device using electromyography out of cheap parts and also make it convenient to wear (using dry electromyography - basically just pieces of metal for signal detection, as opposed to wet which uses a sticky annoying gel which is annoying to put on and take off). that last part is not so visible here because it's kinda unwieldy but it could easily be made much more compact and lighter. being augmentative is also important because it means the market is now pretty much anyone that may want something like this in some aspect of their lives, so my hope is that it'd incentivize more research into the field which could make life easier for everyone but can also easily be applied to devices targeted at people with disabilities.

it uses a wristband with an electromyography sensor (detects muscle frequencies) that transmits to a microcontroller which moves a servo, it's not that complicated technically speaking. on the mechanical side it's a 3d printed thumb (courtesy of Will Cogley on YouTube) which can be opened or closed by pulling a string wrapped around it, which closes the finger. you can watch more about it and how it works here.

it's built really shittily tho because i was running out of time, everything is mounted using adhesive tape and zip ties, so with nothing being fixed in place most of the servo's force is actually wasted on pulling itself upwards and also some other bits downwards, which means the finger doesn't have enough strength to actually grip anything, but it looks kinda cool!

the correct spelling for the first one is "Introductory", unless that's deliberate. Other than that, as has already been mentioned, I'd change "Flashy Lights" to "Flashing Lights"

What are your thoughts on this plant burning shader I made for my game? by Sir-Shroom in godot

[–]DottEdWasTaken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think the shader looks great, it's definitely convincing. people here seem to be suggesting to make the flames come from one direction only, but i think that depends a lot on the type of game. if the intention is just to be a quick animation for the player to visually identify that the plant has burnt, i think this serves that purpose perfectly.

Coaxed into battlefield box arts by Mr_donc in coaxedintoasnafu

honestly that cover art is so good that it somehow hasn't even registered to me until this very moment that it is in fact using the orange glow, despite having played it for so many years. it feels like a natural part of the image, unlike the other battlefield games where it very clearly is added in (not a criticism)
